After a couple of car bookings went missing I found myself in Doha airport sans wheels, and since I know my way round the the slums of Calcutta better than the average taxi driver knows his way round Doha, I resorted to Hassan Baghazal Trading Est. (Rent a Car Division). On the phone I spoke to someone who's name sounded like "Mr. Lovely", but I assumed that a combination of telephone and background noise, and English not being his first language, I had misheard somehow. Not the case. But the funny thing is, he is actually a really nice bloke. Well named Mr. & Mrs. Rodrigues! If you need a car in Qatar I thouroughly recommend him, his cars are reasonably priced and come pre-scratched so you don't have to worry too much about where you ... read more

I got in at 4.30pm and went straight to Bodrum Backpackers, where I met Ria (kiwi chick) and Pascal (from manly). We went out for dinner along the beach. A massive steak from 1st stop, $20 for a glass of wine, entrée and monster sizzling steak. An early night for me coz I’m planning a day of photography tomorrow. Tarik gave me some tips on where to go for photos, he’s a budding photographer too and works at the hostel. It’s a gorgeous day, the sun is out and reflecting on the turquoise water. The boats are all in the harbour with their flags flying and everyone is looking relaxed. I headed straight to the Castle of St Peter. Built in 1402, it’s so impressive and even has a museum of underwater archaeology within, housing finds ... read more

Despite having to force ourselves out of bed due to the lack of any light to wake us naturally we managed to get up, pack and check out fairly early. We had to rush to the station otherwise the next bus would have been an hour later. We grabbed a typical Turkish snack of pretzels to eat on the way. We arrived at Troy and to our surprise it was 10ytl for adults but completely free for students of any nationality. That is what we like to see. At the entrance to the site there is a big model replica of the wooden horse in an artists impression. You are allowed to climb inside it right up to the top which we gladly did with no pretences of being too old or mature. Troy itself is ... read more

Another 7hr bus trip from Canakkele to Secuk - they seem to be getting easier. We got in just after dark so I found my hostel - Aust & NZ hostel, checked in, had food then chatted with the others. It’s quite nice here, a roof terrace (where dinner is served) that looks over the town, a downstairs courtyard full of long seats and plenty of cushions and even a huge inside tv/movie room. That was me on the first night, hung out with York from Germany, Hamish from Canada and Mark from London. An absolutely gorgeous day today so up for breaky then Harry (the manager) drives 5 of us into Ephesus. What an amazing place. Just to walk down the former main street and look into the remains of the Temple of Hadrian, and ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Tel Aviv District » Tel Aviv October 28th 2007

Just fresh back from a weekend in Tel Aviv... with a few stories. On Friday, my good friend Dana (graduated Cornell in 06', is here on a fullbright, and besides having these wonderful credentials, is an amazing friend and housemate!), went up to Tel Aviv to see a concert. The concert was this funk/drum and bass band that performed in this hidden venue right near Yafo. The Apples. Check them out. On Friday evening, before the concert, Dana and I visited Dana's family in Rishon L'tziyon. Dana has this wonderfully sweet grandfather who is married to, how do I say it a bit nicer, em, not the nicest woman in the world. This is Dana's stepgrandmother, (family through marriage, Dana wants all of us to know) who is a bit of a grump. Rather, a bit ... read more

Our room at Anzac house hostel has no windows and therefore no daylight to wake us up naturally. We slept till around eleven when I got restless and checked the time. A room with no windows is a dangerous thing when you are constantly tired as we are. Yesterday we had both agreed that going to Gallipoli was too expensive considering our lack of interest in it. We were both vaguely interested until we read that the majority of the trip consists of visiting cemeteries which for £22 each did not seem worth it. We had both agreed to look at tour agencies whilst walking around to see if we could find anything cheaper. We couldn't and we weren't entirely disappointed. The plan for today was to get a dolmus out to Troy; however we were ... read more

Testeintrag Ende.... read more

Al-Salam alaykum (peace be upon you)! I hope that you all enjoyed my last entries even though I could compile them and make a novel they were so long. I am both trying to be informative and detail my journey so that is why I am going into detail on many of my experiences here. I hope that you are learning from the entries and feel free to email me about them, or you, it is hard to keep up with people when I am on the other side of the world. This entry is going to be a bit on the sufi lectures that I have begun attending and then a section on the roman ruins at Jerash. Just to give you a brief update on my classes, I have doing great and starting to ... read more

Middle East » Oman » Dhofar October 28th 2007

The port stop today was Salalah, Oman. Salalah is the second-largest city in the Sultanate of Oman, and the largest city in the Dhofar Province. Once again the cruise dock was a little out of the way. We had decided to use some more of our "credit" and took a ship's tour called "Oman Heritage" which travelled into the 'real' Oman. First we went along the easterly Cornish to the coastal village of Taqa where traditional rafts and boats are still made. We took in views of the village from the cliffs, and then visited the castle (for which the town is most famous) which was previously occupied by the Wali (local tribal chief). We rejoined the coach and were taken a further 20 km to the tomb of Bin Ali who brought Islam to southern ... read more
