Apparently so is that well-known hotbed of subversion, Couchsurfing, since attempting to access either site in the UAE yields this: "We apologize the site you are attempting to visit has been blocked due to its content being inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political and moral values of the United Arab Emirates." Damn cheapskates trying to avoid staying in 7 star hotels, and how cheeky trying to call home cheaply. (incidentally 7 star hotels don't like casually dressed tourists approaching their gate...)... read more

Greetings all. Hope all is well since our last blog. We've been enjoying the sights of Istanbul. We been able to visit the Blue Mosque, The Topkapi Palace, St. Sofia's catherdal and the Grand Bazaar. This we did with our tour group on the last day. Since then we've been staying with Emma, a friend I used to work with. We've been delayed a little due to the damage down to Stephen's bag. They've agreed to pay us 100 Euro, and we've found somewhere here to mend the bag. We've seen a few more sights, but basically trying to get this backpack fixed. Another day we all spent a lovely afternoon in the park, where I learnt how to play backgammon from three players, let just say it was difficult enough then add three people "trying" ... read more

We left Frankfurt Airport shortly after 19:00, right on schedule. Hearing all the announcements on the plane in German and Turkish confirmed that we were indeed headed for an adventure of a lifetime. Up to that point, the whole departure for Turkey had seemed surreal in the hustle and bustle of one of the world's busiest airports. The plane was not full and we were given a 3 seat row all to ourselves. We saw the lights of Antalya right around 11:00 PM and landed at 10 after. The first people encountered were the Visa sales agents. They did not speak English or German, and I was unable to tell them that we actually wanted multiple entry Visas - as we would be exiting Turkey and re-entering. We settled for the single entry one and will ... read more

In exactly 48 hours I will be blasting off to Abu Dhabi! Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven emirates that comprise the United Arab Emirates and was also the largest of the former Trucial States. It is also the location where Garfield occasionally sends Nermal. The reason for this is because the city of Abu Dhabi, and the majority of UAE, has a large amount of stray cats. Garfield would often put the kitten Nermal in a box and ship him to Abu Dhabi. The phrase "Abu Dhabi is where all the cute kittens go" is sometimes used in the comic. Abu Dhabi, it's far away Abu Dhabi, that's where you'll stay Abu Dhabi, the place to be For any kitten who's annoying me, yeah! Abu Dhabi, it's off the track Abu Dhabi, now ... read more

Last night I went to the famous Beit Al Jabrin which is located in the back streets of Damascus. It was just Matt and I as Pascale has gone up to Palymra now. The food was okay but came in massive portions which considering the price is reasonable - the meal cost 380 SYP around 4 pounds! This morning I woke up late again!!! After Breakfast went to omayad mosque which was very peaceful in comparison to the rest of Damascus. I donned a fetching robe which made me look so stylish and wandered around for a bit - sat down to take some pictures when Mohamed asked if he could talk to me. We ended up having a really interesting conversation about the differences between the 'east' and west and religion - turns out he ... read more

there are 3 pages of photos so click next at the bottom of page to look " here's a newsflash: contrary to what the US state department may wish the world to think, syria is not populated by terrorists, zealots and other boogeyman. in fact, syrians are among the most friendly and hospitable people in the world, and most visitors to their country end up developing lifelong infatuation with its gentle charms" - guidebook as you can see from our photos, syria is amazing, seriously. from the second we got there, we couldnt stop taking photos, and commenting back and forth to eachother "look at that" "wow" "awesome". i know some of you out there think that it is unsafe, we are living proof that it was one of the most genuine and hospitable places we ... read more

My next step in trying to find a crack in the wall of Central Asian bureaucracy was to fly to Dubai and spend a few days trying to get on flights. There's one tomorrow evening to Bishkek, one on each of Saturday and Sunday to Dushanbe and another to Bishkek on Monday. I figured that three different airlines operating to two different countries from two airports should yield at least one success. Of course the headache won't end there - there's the small matter of my Uzbek LOI stating that I'll be applying for the visa in Kazakhstan and then walking across a particular border crossing from Tajikistan, which no longer makes logical sense if I'm not starting out in Kazakhstan. Whatever. It'll work out somehow. In the meantime I get to explore Dubai, although this ... read more

Turkey is beautiful! This is my second morning here and ıt is sunny and beautiful. The flight from Moscow was slıghtly more eventful than I would have prefered but ın the end I made ıt here. My flıght from Moscow to Kıev was delayed and I mıssed my connectıng flıght to Istanbul. They were about to put me on a van to drıve me out to the plane and then I was quıckly ushered back ınto the aırport. I am traveling to Abu Dhabi for one month to work with one of my company's clients there, teaching doctors and nurses how to use our software. I am thrilled to have this opportunity and cannot wait to share stories and photos with you from my journey to the Middle East! I am certain that I will not leave there without a sunburn, too many souvenirs, fond memories, and a new perspective. Check this blog for updates and photos. Fun facts about Abu Dhabi: *There is a 9 hour time difference from Kansas City to the UAE. *The average temperature there in the summer months is 110 degrees...which means it sometimes gets hotter than that. Um...that's hot. *It is a Muslim society, but travelers are not required to wear traditional Middle Eastern dress. However, dressing conservatively ... read more
