We’re heading into Iran now where internet access may not be easy and we really wanted to complete our record of the Turkey tour, but don't know when we'll be able to publish this. Up Up and Away Cappadocia was our last port of call on the West Turkey “tourist trail”. What an amazing place topped off with our Hot Air Balloon ride, a 50th Birthday Present for Terry from folks back home. It was a beautiful sunny morning and as if being in a hot air balloon wasn’t exciting enough (especially for Terry with all those cylinders valves and functions) the geology below us was breathtaking. We were lucky enough to have an English pilot and so received a running commentary on what was what, and there was a lot of it. An hour later ... read more

The last couple of days have seen us trawl up more marine life to analyse, quite a few technical problems, with a bit of gear, so have been kept busy with a few more challenging problems - the heat and humidy play funny games with electronics. Photos are of samples caught, lots of electric rays, sardines, various tropical fish , a few sea eels. The sunsets and sunrises are unlike anything I've ever seen before, as for getting sunburnt over here - it just doesn't happen with the haze in the air (from dust and sand) still very warm (32-35 degress C). ... read more

We arrived by ferry from Istanbul in the port town of Bandirma on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara to begin "the actual cycling portion" of our trip, intending to follow the circuitous coastline of the North Aegean for parts unknown to the south. Between extended stays as ordinary tourists in Marrakech and then Istanbul, we'd been nearly a month off our bikes, so we set a modest goal of 65km for our first day of cycling from Bandirma to Biga, not knowing what kind of conditions we'd encounter. Even so, we disembarked from the ferry a bit too late to start riding even this short distance, so we checked into Bandirma's quirky Hotel Elit, where we bargained them down from 90 to 70YTL for a glass-enclosed room high above the town square and ... read more

This is probably one of the best things I've ever done in my life and I would recommend that every aussie and kiwi come to Gallipoli...if not for ANZAC day then to just see it. You have no idea of what happened here until you see the scale and size of the place. The sun rising over the cliffs during the dawn service was so moving that I think pretty much everyone around was having a tear or two....myself included. We boarded a bus from Istanbul for the four hour drive down the coast. Interesting drive and we got to the site mid afternoon. The bus drove us around the major battle grounds and memorials, Lone Pine, Chunuck Bair and a few others. The view from the top is amazing and the trenches are still there ... read more

we left dahab and took a busride up to the gulf of aquaba, which is where egypt, israel and jordan meet. we took a ferry from egypt to jordan and then another few hour bus ride to wadi musa. this is the closest town to petra, the ancient nabatean city. we chose probably the HOTTEST day to go check out these scorching ruins, well city built into the rocks. its better known for being the spot for the film indiana jones and the last crusade. it was all very facinating but all the walking/hiking in 40 degree weather made it all a little daunting! after petra we mosied on up to amman, the capital. we heard a little rumour of a starbucks coffee shop could be found in this city, considering we havent had drip coffee since ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Gallipoli April 30th 2008

We arrived utterly exhausted from our tour of Egypt utterly desperate for a Laundromat to wash our clothes at. We’d gone for wayyyy to long without a machine wash and the old handwash in the basin was losing its effect. The family was there to meet us at the hotel and it was lovely to see them again and we couldn’t believe how much Kaylah had grown up since we’ve been gone. We had a day in Istanbul before our tour began and took the time to catch up on some sleep and visit the Bazaar. After that though, we were flung into the frantic itinerary that comes with guided tours. You see so much but it is tiring. We had another day with the family before they headed back home and we changed hotels and ... read more

Well it has been a long time since the last post. Work has been totally frantic with Chelle travelling to London, Madrid, Bahrain and Oman. In fact during the month of April Chelle spent more time out of Dubai than she did in it. Luckily however on April 30th Chelle and Dave jet setted out (business class) on Emirates to head for 6 days holiday in Jordan. Heaven! Our limo arrived nice and early in the morning (5:30am) for our 7:30am departure to Amman. Business class as always was just lovely. Although our plane was rather old we still had a good time. The airport in Amman (capital of Jordan) wasn't the flashest place in the world. The visa process was a little tricky with us having to go to one counter and pay some money ... read more

Day 1, Overnight bus ride from Izmir to Gőreme: $25 I took the metro (about $1) to the main bus station (Otogar) in Bornova, Izmir. I had no trouble getting pointed in the right direction of the long distance bus counters. I think the only company to travel all the way to Gőreme was Metro, so I approached the counter and asked if anyone spoke english. Several of the ticket agents said they spoke a little, so I proceeded to book my 8pm bus to Cappadocia. I decided I was going to stay in Gőreme, a small central town. I had already booked a room in a pension ($17 nightly for a room with a bath). I was seated next to a young college student. She did not speak much english, but between my daughterś handy ... read more

27-4-08 We arrived at about 8 in the morning and found ourselves some accommodation. We ended out at a pretty cool hostel, which was carved into the rocks. The breakfast they served in the morning was also the best breakfast I had in my travels. Ahhhh menemen. We decided that day we would just go for a walk. After some walking, and a ride in the back of a truck, we ended out at some great caves. Here we embraced our inner Indiana Jones and spent hours exploring the churches and homes carved into the rocks. That night we decided to go to the Turkish Nights dinner. This incorporated a lot of traditional dances, including James getting some lessons from a belly dancer. Funny Stuff. We then headed out to Flintstones cave bar, where a “Best ... read more
