Well after our last blog you could probably sense that we were a little down and under, but we finally caught a break! After leaving Garbage Beach we travelled up the coastline to a city called Tolú, which apparantly is a popular holiday destination for locals. The beach was pretty sad, brown murky water and little patches of sand, but there were tonnes of seaside restaurants and little bars, and everybody was in pretty good spirits. We stayed a night, and booked a boat tour the next morning of the San Bernadino Islands just 40 minutes off the coast. We had heard these were pretty special and beautiful, but we were feeling a little skeptical at the present time. We discovered that the secret ( in our experience ) to an awesome beach is Islands. Coastlines ... read more
I know I have been giving alot of transportation play by plays but this one needs to be told Medellin to Turbo - 9 hours : We took a night bus that left at 9 pm actually not so bad, the seats reclined pretty far back, we read a bit and then slept most of the way Turbo to Sapzurro - 4 hrs, plus 3 hours of waiting : arrived in Turbo at 6 am, sat in a dirty, stinky, sketchy and rainy port waiting for the boat to take us to our destination, projected time 2 hours, actual time 4. The boat was crowded, the ocean was incredibly choppy, it was pouring, we were absolutely sopping wet, water splashing on us constantly and the boat was swelling up and slamming down on the water..our poor ... read more
We left the beach, headed to Guayaquil which is one of the main cities in the south, and where the main airport is located. We stayed a night there before our flight in the morning at a hostel called The Funky Monkey. The guy who owned and operated it was one of my favorite characters thus far. Although the meeting was brief, it was definitely a memory. He was about our age, kinda frumpy fellow with awkward eye contact, his hostel consisted of a couple of rooms, a courtyard and a miniature pool. His aloof manner and really unique accent just made us chuckle....I guess its one of those hard to explain things. I wish I had a picture. The Hostel was right next to a Super Mall, beautifully air conditioned and it even had a ... read more
After Baños we boardeda bus en route to a town in the mountains called Queveda. We knew it was going to be a long 5 hr journey along windy mountain roads, but we had no idea at which the speed and confidence we would take these sharp windy cliffside corners. Our bus driver, donning sunglasses and an upbeat attitude blasted his favorite espanol albumn of the moment and busted through these mountains like a bat out of hell. I had taken a motion sickness pill so I had fallen asleep right away but jolted awake by feeling the bus literally hurling around the bends.Í´ll never forget waking up and opening my eyes to look out the front of the bus and frantically grabbing anything around me ( bobby, the window ect) The crazy thing about this ... read more
Well we left the crowded city, hopped on a bus headed 3.5 hrs south to the town of Baños. On the bus down they played the Green Mile ( in spanish, with spanish subtitles) which is a crazy movie to watch in another language, but albeit a worthy distraction. In was fun disecting the subtitles into verbs and nouns and conjugations and making some sense out of it. The highway we took there is dubbed the ¨avenue of the Volcanos ¨. There are about 6 or 7 along the way, only a few were on the portion of the highway to Baños, the main one called Cotopaxi, but it was overcast and cloudy so it wasn´t possible to see. Next time maybe, it´s one of the quinessential volcanos here, their water bottles have Cotopaxi in the ... read more
Hello all, we are back at it ! We started our trip off in Miami, where we stayed at a typical Miami style Art Deco hotel just steps from the beach. Let me just start off with I LOVE MIAMI !! The beach is is gorgeous with white sand and clear blue water, the art deco theme is such a cool back drop, the happy hour and restaurant choices are ridiculous! We ate Brazillian, Cuban, Bavarian ( Hofbrau ) and Argentinin. We rented bicycles and cruised around the city over bridges that linked man made islands, boardwalks on South Beach, and marinas. We would definitely visit again. Our flight from Miami was a short 4 hour jaunt to Quito, Ecuador. The city is located in the Andes 2800ish meters above sea level. You can feel the ... read more

we left dahab and took a busride up to the gulf of aquaba, which is where egypt, israel and jordan meet. we took a ferry from egypt to jordan and then another few hour bus ride to wadi musa. this is the closest town to petra, the ancient nabatean city. we chose probably the HOTTEST day to go check out these scorching ruins, well city built into the rocks. its better known for being the spot for the film indiana jones and the last crusade. it was all very facinating but all the walking/hiking in 40 degree weather made it all a little daunting! after petra we mosied on up to amman, the capital. we heard a little rumour of a starbucks coffee shop could be found in this city, considering we havent had drip coffee since ... read more
there are 50 photos on this one! make sure you scroll and click next, there are three pages to look at !! Dahab, we're sad to leave you but the time has come. We had some good times and horrible times but they were memorable just the same. We will miss you and all the people that are a couple degrees off. Kims dive instructor summed up dahab with this line "the worlds self-check in mental institution" and we say this with the best of intentions, the people were interesting and fun. We will miss the wind, the begging one eyed diseased cats, the relentlessly pushy taxi drivers, the never ending sunshine and the late nights. But as modest mouse said, "the good times are killing me," so we will move on and do some more ... read more
