Well here we are on our last stop of our big trip - Dubai. We’ve been enjoying the heat (not) and the hospitality of Brad, Suzie, Riley, Kelsey and their friends. We were taken to the Friday Brunch that has become somewhat of a tradition among the ex-pat community over here and enjoyed an all you can eat and drink fest for four hours before retiring by the pool and finishing off the beers. We (naturally) had a sleep in on Saturday before our local guide (aka Brad) took us to a few of the sights and returned us back to the apartment in time to be picked up by our Desert Safari tour. This tour was awesome. They picked us up from the apartment and drove us out to the desert (which wasn’t that far ... read more

When we left Britain in February we really didn’t want to return. We found though as we touched down in London that we were really looking forward to our week here. It was like a completely different country to the one we left in February. The sun was shining, the squirrels and birds were out and the flowers were in bloom. When we left it was grey, cold, wet and downright bloody miserable. We had a very very long list of things we wanted to see and do during our week in London and really tried to fit in as many as we could but there is just too much to do in London! Even though we’d visited for a few days last year there were still some of the tick the box sights to see. ... read more

We arrived utterly exhausted from our tour of Egypt utterly desperate for a Laundromat to wash our clothes at. We’d gone for wayyyy to long without a machine wash and the old handwash in the basin was losing its effect. The family was there to meet us at the hotel and it was lovely to see them again and we couldn’t believe how much Kaylah had grown up since we’ve been gone. We had a day in Istanbul before our tour began and took the time to catch up on some sleep and visit the Bazaar. After that though, we were flung into the frantic itinerary that comes with guided tours. You see so much but it is tiring. We had another day with the family before they headed back home and we changed hotels and ... read more

Well we sure got what we asked for when we woke up on our first day in Cairo....sun! Southern Morocco was nice and warm but Fes and Casa were around 15 when we were there so we really weren’t prepared for the 40 degree heat that awaited us in Egypt. We booked a 9 day tour of Egypt, deciding that of all the countries we were visiting on this trip, Egypt was the one that we’d most likely be thankful for a guided tour. We were right and our tour and guide were fantastic. We had a ball. Our first stop of the whole tour was the big one....the pyramids of Giza. We expected the hassle to be unbelievable but surprisingly it was quite tame. We’d heard mixed reviews from those that had visited the Pyramids. ... read more

When you’re about to land in Morocco and you’re still not sure if you need a visa to get in ... ”always look on the bright side of life...do do ... da da da da da da”. When you’re luggage still hasn’t arrived an hour after your flight has landed ... ”always look on the bright side of life...do do ... da da da da da da”. When your arranged transfer isn’t waiting for you after you finally get your luggage ... ”always look on the bright side of life...do do ... da da da da da da”. When you realise your sim card doesn’t work so you can’t call the hotel about the missing transfer and you have no idea where you are ... ”always look on the bright side of life...do do ... da ... read more

Hola! Well folks, summer is here!!! Finally. For us it has been a looooonnggg, cold and grey winter and with a combination of heading further south, hitting April and starting daylight savings Summer has arrived. It was so lovely to be able to stroll around at 7 in the evening without a big jacket on and it still be light. Not to mention how wonderful it is to be warmed by sunshine. We flew out of Milan on Easter Sunday and into Barcelona. Upon arriving we realised, we’re becoming true blue carefree Aussie backpackers, we knew no Spanish except gracias which is actually pronounced “grassy-ass” over here by the locals. Took us a while to stop giggling when we said that. We expected Spanish to be similar to Italian but alas it isn’t as similar as ... read more

So here we are, home of the Renaissance - Firenze, Italia. We made our way from Sorrento to Naples, leaving our ability to buy tickets and board the train we intended on catching on time in the hands of the travel gods. They were kind and we made it with moments to spare. Damn, we’re getting good at this travelling thing (touch wood!). So anyway, art lovers will know all about Florentine art and the Renaissance but as we had no idea about any of it before we started this trip here is the low down. The “Renaissance” means re-birth. Rome had fallen and Europe had been in a kind of Dark Ages for almost a thousand years. Even throughout this period however, Florence still thrived as a trade centre along the Arno River. This meant ... read more

From Rome we travelled south and further inland to experience a bit of Italia agroturismo on the outskirts of a small town named Sora. Italy is packed with these farmstays and we thought we’d chosen a “real” one - that is, one that was more into showcasing the natural beauty and produce of the region than squeezing as many Euros as they can out of visitors. It turns out our farmstay wasn’t as “real” as we’d hoped, but at the same time it wasn’t that bad. The scenery was beautiful and while the manager and his mum (who didn’t seem too happy with the whole farm stay idea but cooked and cleaned anyway) were a bit more business focussed than we had hoped, the father was an incredibly warm, friendly and patient man and the time ... read more

Ciao Ciao Well here we find ourselves in the centre of the ancient world - Roma! To be honest, while we were looking forward to seeing the sights and ticking the big box that is Rome, we were expecting to not enjoy Rome. We were expecting pickpockets galore, bad food, crazy Italians, everything so expensive we can’t eat, 2 hour waits for all the sights and a typical “big city” feel. Upon landing at Rome’s Leondardo Da Vinci airport and effortlessly catching the “Leonardo Express” train right into the main train station which happened to be 200 metres from our apartment we were pleasantly surprised. The central station was a hub of activity (and no doubt pickpockets with very nice Italian leather shoes!) but it had a certain energy to it that other big European cities ... read more

Dobry den Well we’re writing this on our last night in the Czech Republic, in fact our last night in Eastern Europe (I think our first “real time” blog so far - woohoo!). We decided to return to our favourite places from summer - Krakow, Poland and Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic. We are so glad that we decided to return as we’ve had an absolute ball revisiting these fantastic and beautiful parts of the world. It has also been a wonderful experience being able to visit them in two very different seasons and also to see how this area of Europe is changing before our very eyes. We’re a little bit removed from it all in Australia being so far away from Europe but the European Union is (obviously) big around here. Most Eastern European countries ... read more
