Yep...I've been here for a few weeks now and I've got a few more to go! it's not bad ;) ANYWAY, the big reason for this post is because I will be taking a short vacation when I get home....making it 4 continents I've been in in a year! THAT'S my kind of year. I am heading to Poland. The dates are not set yet because I don't know what day I'm getting home and I NEED to know that before I go and schedule anything. Mary said she may be able to go with me---we'll see :) But here's the basic idea of what I'm doing: Flying to Warsaw, Poland, spending 2 days there @ a Hostel and visiting what's left of the Ghetto, then taking a train to Krakow where I'll spend the rest ... read more

Geo: 39.935, 32.847It's midnight on our last night in Turkey. It literally ended with a bang. We booked a room in the Allstar Esenboga Airport hotel so that we could be close by for our 6am flight home. Little did we know that there was a wedding also booked at the hotel that involved, conservatively 750 guests and two fireworks displays. We were able to watch most the lavish spectacle from our 6th floor balcony. If you ever get married in Turkey, from what we were able to discern, you just have to speak a simple, "Evet" and sign something and the deed is done. Whether you serve dinner to close to a thousand of your nearest and dearest, hire two bands (one traditional strolling band and a more modern on) and party on 'til the ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302Kate: We just finished packing and the boys took their last swim in the pool. We all want to stay in Turkey, but we want to go home at the same time. We went to a farewell tea with Amishay's family. Alp Doan had been sick, but he was feeling better and was in a good mood. Alex made squeaky noises at him and Alp Doan made squeaky noises back and they were both giggling. Nazli offered to let us take Alp Doan back to America with us, but Alex did not want to be a big brother.Josh: My heart's being torn in half (Alex: mine too!). I'm thinking about maybe going to Turkey next summer. Maybe we will win the lottery. Yesterday the Shaggy Dog was shorn. He tried to resist, but to ... read more

"I'm sorry sir, the only car we have left is a big one sir" said Maylene, the girl behind the Hertz desk at Doha International Airport. "How much for the day?" I asked. "300 Riyals sir" she told me. "I'll take it please" I said, handing over my credit card, passport and driving licence. I'm not really that interested in cars with less than one gearbox but I thought having a Chevy Caprice or a Dodge Charger for a day might be fun, especially as I had to go up to Ras Laffan on the North East side of the Peninsula. So imagine my disappointment when I got out to the car park and was shown my Ford Crown Victoria, a car of craptactularly bad proportions. Now I'm no Jeremy Clarkson, but if this car was ... read more

Hi loyal Travelblog followers!! The troops and İ have made our next move - south to the Turkish ısand of Bozcaada. A small ısland of vineyards and beaches (tough İ know). Today we have occupied ourselves walking around an old fortress (truly amazing) followed by a couple of cups of çay (pronounced chai ıt ıs tea served in little glass cups). This afternoon we have been for a swim in the Aegean coupled wıth lots of sunbathing. But don´t worry İ´m still not very tanned. Last time I updated you İ was just on my way to do a tour of the Gallipoli battlefıelds. It was a truly awe inspiring experience!! The immense history of the place was overwhelming at times. The sheer folly of the ANZAC invasion becomes very clear as soon as you see ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302We've been lying pretty low the last few days, dividing much of our time between the pool and the beach and socializing with our friends. The socializing has unfortunately been cut back a bit because little Ipek and Alp Doan both have been sick. They both went down on the same day, so we're all wondering where they got it. Luckily it seems to be a little person's virus and no one else has been ill. Still, it's kind of a bummer. No late night parties when there are sick babies--all the moms have to stay home. This morning we headed to Yalikavak for our last market day. I felt myself getting a little choked up at the notion that we won't be able to shop there any more will all of the beautiful produce. ... read more

August 28, 2007 We arrived yesterday in Dubai at about 5:30 in the morning and were greeted with 38degree weather. Whew it was hot and humid. Neither Mark nor I could sleep on the plane which left Singapore at 12:30am. The plane originally left from Jakarta and they were spraying people who came from there. I have no idea with what or why, but it was strange. Mark and I had heard wonderful things about Emirates Air, and maybe we just had a bad plane but the Quantas flight was much better we thought. Anyways, we arrived at the hotel and were happy with our choice. We are staying at the Dubai Marine Resort and Spa. It is a very nice hotel, but then almost all the hotels in Dubai are really nice. It is amazing ... read more

Turkish is in fact a very easy language to learn... Really, no joke! Just look at the pictures and you will understand why. It is just half the fun if you don't have some French (or Swiss-German) skills however. Do you recognize the words? Starting tomorrow, this all won't help us anymore. Farsi (or Persian) is very different and we will need to learn some basic words quickly! Turkey was wonderful. We will upload some pics from Anı and Doğubayazıt with the next entry from Iran. Take care. ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Gallipoli August 28th 2007

Yesterday, we headed south away from İstanbul to Ecebat on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Today we're looking forward to a tour of the battlefields of Gallipoli, but more about that next blog. On Sunday we braved the blazing sun to take in the Turkish Grand Prix. We were sitting on an embankment where it was 36 degrees, and we had no shade. The GP was awesome though. We had a great view of several corners and a long straight. No crashes occured in front of us, but there were some close calls. You don't get a full apprecıatıon for the speed of the cars and the noise they make unless you're there. Anyway, got to go pay tribute to the fallen ANZAC warriors. Til next time, stay safe... read more
