Fergie's song "Big Girls Don't Cry" is the story of my life. It pretty much sums up almost every relationship (professional, romantic and friendship wise) I have ever had. I'm feeling down. I'm sincerely starting to doubt the job prospect for me here in Israel - at least in the firefighting/medic capacity. It seems as if I am stone-walled every 5 steps I take. It's really starting to get to me. Now, I'm all for the belief and truly I do believe it, that I am where God means me to be. I am in love with living in Israel, in love with the people, and in love with all the crazy things that happen to me here. I feel so much more at peace with myself now that I live here that I don't want ... read more

Welcome back readers! We're gettıng ınto our last few days ın Turkey, and thıngs are startıng to get hectıc as we work our way back to Istanbul to meet our traın (and pıck up our carpets). We moved on from Amasya yesterday to a small fıshıng town named Sınop on the Black Sea coast. The bus rıde was very excıtıng... Turkısh bus drıvers thınk nothıng of ploughıng down the mıddle of the road. The horn ıs used often to tell people to get out of the way, and I thınk the ındıcators are only paınted on because I've never seen a drıver use them. The bus wound around some faırly gnarly roads that weren't especıally flat. In fact a lot of the road looked very sımılar to the roads on the Coromandel Penınsula - very steep ... read more

Pildistada siiamaani kahjuks väga p... read more

Mehabah (hello) The team and I have moved on from Eğırdır to Goreme ın Cappadocıa and then on to my current locatıon ın Amasya. We've been really busy ın the mean tıme too! We left Eğırdır a couple of days ago. They told us the only bus left at 9pm, so we decıded to back track to a larger transport hub to get a better tıme. But when we caught the earlıest bus, sure enough ıt passed straıght through Eğırdır and stopped to pıck up passengers (d,oh!!). We eventually arrıved ın Goreme at about 10 pm after taxı rıde ın an ancıent Renault, pıloted by a guy who seemed about 12 (ok he was probably older, but stıll, not real old). We stayed 3 nıghts ın Goreme at a wee place called the Köse Pensıon (and ... read more

Merhaba, Türkçe Biliyormusun? This has been a common question we have been answering since the beginning of our Turkish classes. Hello, do you speak Turkish? The answer usually being a despondent "Çok Az, Türkçe Biiyorum". We have finished with our crash course in Turkish, and now get to stumble through a language, that we otherwise wouldn't have to worry about. It makes ordering much more interesting though. We have been able to explore Istanbul much more thoroughly over this past week. Our classes begin at nine everyday, and are about a half-hour walk from our Hotel, so we have generally eaten breakfast and are out of the hotel by a quarter after. Class ends at four thirty, and we have the rest of the day for leisure. Generally trips to the grocery store, Akmerkez (the large ... read more

So I've decided something. I have decided that I despise old people in the supermarket. Now, in order to be fair, most people go by me unnoticed on their shopping excursions and I have met 2 very nice old people before, but on the whole? I can't stand them. Let's just refer back to my Pesach adventure with the insane little old man that rammed his cart into me repeatedly and screamed at me because well...I'm chalking it up to he may be bi-polar or schizophrenic. One or the other. This is just one example. (Go back to oldeposts if you're confused and want a refresher.) Today, all I wanted was 4 items (which technically qualifies me for the express lane - not that anything is actually "express" in Israel but I digress). Anyways, I got ... read more

Hey Guys just a quick Update before I leave on Vacation. Ulpan ended Wednesday after 6 weeks. It was an experience, but it was very tough trying to learn a year of hebrew in 6 weeks. We had our exam which went very well. That night we had an end of ulpan party at the Beer Avraham. Which in Hebrew means Abrahams well. Bascially, when Abraham was in Israel people would dig wells because there was very little water in the desert. The one Abraham built just happens to be in Beer Sheva. There was a very nice authentic Israeli dinner with a cool band. This upcoming week we have 10 days off. Starting tomorrow I am spending 3 days in the northern city of Haifa and 3 days in Jerusalem. I am going with 3 ... read more

“Mister, do you need a nice room for the night?” was the first thing I heard as I stepped off of the nightmarish bus in Selçuk. My cramped, uncomfortable seat had left me in a grumpy mood and my muscles were in the first stages of atrophy, so I was not in the mood for a long search for a place to stay. I turned to the woman that had asked the question and mustered the best smile I could. She then said, “I have a nice pension just around the corner.” We quickly discussed all of the important points, such as cost, location and amenities and they were all to my liking. I told her that I would like to see a room. She smiled and motioned to me to follow her. We left the ... read more

I'm a little surprised to find that I'm uneasy (a bit frightened really). I feel all alone (family doesn't count) in a big, strange city where the residents don't speak our language. We have no food in the house. It's Shabbat, so the stores are closed. It's really disconcerting. I'm sure things will work out--I'll get more familiar as we stay here longer. But right now, 11 months sounds awfully long. (Didn't we say we'd have a harder time than Kate?) That said, Haifa really is a beautiful city. Very hilly--we're told no one bikes here. The apartment is large by the Jerusalem standards we're used to. We have a pleasant, grassy backyard with a southern exposure. On the flight over, we had an 11 hour layover, so we opted to leave Heathrow for a quick ... read more
