After leaving Brugge I headed up to Amsterdam. This should have been a nice easy jump on a train and go. I did not need a reservation or anything. Well I ended up jumping on the wrong train and I went to Antwerpen instead of Amsterdam. That wasn't too bad because Antwerpen has a beatiful old looking train station. They also had frequent trains running too and from Amsterdam so I just jumped on the next train and was in the real city of sin in no time. I was plenty forewarned about Amsterdam so I knew all the scams and what to stay away from, but there is a little bit of uneasyness when the first guy comes up from behind you and whispers in your ear "Coke? Ecstacy?" Um, no thanks. I don't want ... read more

Dave and I were regretting not having payed a few more Euros and upgrading to the first class sleeper train cabin. Things had seemed fine when we had started out in Munich with a pair of Irish schoolteachers - these guys looked and acted more like frat boys than teachers. But, the cabin was small and crowded, and we had people come in from random stops to take up their beds. Aside from that, the loudspeakers would blare every half hour announcing each stop 4 times, and some parts of the room were ice cold, while others were really warm, which makes for a really weird feeling when you sleep. I daresay, that some of the sleeper trains in China were more comfortable. We were feeling pretty disoriented when we finally made it into Centraal Station, ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hesse » Frankfurt August 10th 2007

We are now in Frankfurt am Main. Because of heavy rains in southern Germany the past few days, we skip a scheduled three days of cycling and camping along the Limes from Stuttgart to Hessen and instead took the train to Frankfurt and the comfort of a three day hotel stay here. We are able to visit with Gernot and Harald, who live quite near our hotel. They take us out to a restaurant Zur Schoenen Muellerin, where we have local treats such as Apfelwin, Handkaese mit Musik and large servings of local Schnitzel. ... read more

The French Riviera was our next stop, this was my first experience of seeing beautiful blue water and loads of bronzed beach bods sprawled along the seaside. I loved the Boulevard Jean Jaures which was lined with palm trees just like you see in the movies. We spent that afternoon on rented sun loungers drinking beer and being waited on hand and foot, it was absolute bliss! That evening we headed to Monte Carlo to see the Grand Casino in Monaco. We saw the gorgeous yachts and beautiful houses, the wealth of that place is apparent everywhere. ... read more

Managed to get away from work early and four of us went to the early evening showing of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It was great, not too busy as just after 5 pm and good seats. Excellent film, now need to catch up with the book, read all the others up to this one but left too late to read before it came out. I’ve heard the book is even better than the film as more detail. ... read more

From Romania we went to Budapest and i know how everyone raves about Budapest and i thort it was pretty and all but i totally thort romania was much better but anyways. Budapest was still really nice but the most ridiculously expensive place (that i've been too anyways). Buda and Pest are on opposite sides of the river and we were staying pretty far out of the city but I think we were on the Pest side. Anyways we got into our hotel and then we went for a little tour of Budapest. Had to catch a bus into the city (only because the metro line was being upgraded) then we looked around Pest. Once again a lot of really beautiful buildings, churches, palaces etc. There was this one really beautiful building that used to be ... read more
