Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków August 10th 2007

At the moment i'm sitting in my hostel after spending my first day in Krakow, Poland. I left Prague around 9 o'clock last night and arrived in Krakow 6am this morning. Was the single, most horrible train ride i've ever had. 9 hours of bumpy, rattling, noisy, hot, crowded, unconfortable insomnia. Worst of all, it seems our carriage somehow managed to bypass passport control. So no stamp once again! Anyway, now the whinging is out of the way, Krakow is a beautiful city. For the largest tourist destination in Poland, it is very small. You can walk across it in 20 minutes. Population: 785,000. It's a very old city (like most of Europe), and it's main attraction is Wawel Castle. The castle is fairly big, with most of it's walls in tact. In side the castle ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna August 10th 2007

We had a wonderful day exploring the sights, sounds and tastes of this lovely city. We’re still adjusting to the time change so the day started bright and early. We saw the regal buildings of Ring Boulevard, the road (that was once a wall) that surrounds the inner city. The Hofburg Palace, the center of the Hapsburg Empire for 600 years was quite an impressive sight.. Marisa informed us that she wouldn’t mind living in the Palace (and even picked out her room). We enjoyed the Treasury museum which houses crowns, jewels, royal clothing and many other artifacts of the old Hapsburg Monarchy. Later we visited Judenplatz, the old Jewish area. A small museum houses the ruins of the Synagogue originally built in the 12th century, but destroyed in the 15th century (first by a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany August 10th 2007

I arrived in Florence on August 1 - It was just as hot in the Tuscan region as it was in Greece. Florence is a lovely city and I spent a day just wandering around. I didn't see any of the sites, I just walked and ate - 3 gelatos in one day isn't too much is it?? Cocoa alla aranzia (not sure if that is spelled correctly) is my favourite - although Tiramisu gelato (combining my two favourite deserts) is a close second. I then took the train and bus to San Gimignano, an old fortified town and the start of my tour. San Gimingano is incredibly full of tourists, I spent a day walking around and a day in my hotel reading - then the cycling tour started. The tour was self guided - ... read more

Europe » France » Champagne-Ardenne » Reims August 10th 2007

This weekend I lost my Eurostar virginity and found the answer to an age old question. In order to do so, I headed back to Reims for more champagne tasting - this time with some of the netball crew. In order to get us in the mood - Andrea hosted a pre champagne tasting champagne tasting at her place. Based on blind tasting, the Tesco champers came out tops ... but don't think we don't know our stuff - last year the experts agreed and gave it the top award. Now to the Reims weekend - let's start with the Eurostar .... I love it. Why do I love it? Let me count the ways: * It's sooo easy. * It goes from Waterloo, which is close to home (although not for much longer - soon ... read more

Europe » Norway » Eastern Norway » Oslo August 10th 2007

Being in Oslo was probably Not like travelling in Norway. The West coast is absolutely beautiful and the smaller towns look gorgeous. Unfortunately we only saw a video of these places when we visited the Maritime museum. Oslo is, however a great city to explore. It is compact, pretty, it has a well laid out city plan, a lovely harbour and many inteseting places to see. Instead of detailing everything we did which would be rather dull, instead I will list all the things we noticed about Oslo so you can get a feel of it. * It's really expensive and we couldn't afford to eat out ( and keep in mind we live in London which is already a very expensive city) You can eat Norwegian food like pastries with vegetables, cheese and pesto or ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna August 10th 2007

Just one day after coming back from Croatia, I went to Vienna to visit my dear friend Dani and Tito. We stayed in a city not too far from Vienna called Sooss/Sooß . On the following day we did the usual sightseeing tour across Vienna. We went to Schonbrunn Palace and spent most of the day there. They say that the castle was an imitation of Versailles, but the king run out of money and never managed to make it look as beautiful as the French Palace. We also walked in the town center stopping by the cathedral, which is very impressive. At that night we had some family gathering where I had the chance to try plenty of Viennese dishes, starting with a knoblauch crème supp emit weirsbrot croutons und obershaube, followed by Tafelspitz ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff August 10th 2007

This will definitely be a night to remember! The following day was going to be our friend, Alex's birthday. So, she and a few other friends decided to celebrate this in a different, or rather unusual fashion. We went out clubbing (yeah me clubbing...) and also managed to visit the newly opened club in the city centre - which was rocking! The music was great, exotic interior and a very attractive environment! Later we moved to Club Philarmonic downtown. There are two dance floors in this club, and I just love the music in the basement. We hung out there until early hours of Sat morning.. What a wonderful party it was! ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kilkenny » Kilkenny August 10th 2007

To make our trip to Kilkenny a little more interesting, Iz and I decided to stop off at a couple of sight-seeing points along the way. It wasn’t too long a drive to our final destination, so we could afford to take some time out from our fairly busy schedule. Our first stop was only 30-40 mins from Cork - the Mitchelstown Caves - one of Europe’s major show caves - according to their brochure. We were a little unsure of this when we rocked up - in a tiny car park in front of a dingy country house - and our opinion didn’t improve when we headed up the long drive and into a tiny shack to wait for our guide. First impression were definitely wrong - and as we entered the tiny dwarves door ... read more

Europe » Russia » Northwest » Saint Petersburg August 10th 2007

Hello, hello, From Irkutsk in Russia, to Moscow and on to St Petersburg - crossing the country took time, but the experience was fantastic. We were on a train with at least two full cars of Mongolian Merchants, so we always knew when a stop was coming as the halls would fill with the commotion of the merchants getting their products together and to the appropriate window or area they would claim for the brief platform stops. We also managed to meet a few other travelers along the way and loads of time to play cards, talk, read, and stare out the window for hours. It was relaxing and a nice break between the stops we had. We developed a motto of "sleep on the train" and the long journey allowed us to over exert ourselves ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini August 10th 2007

We woke up this morning at anchor in the caldera at Santorini, Greece. After going up the wrong set of elevators, we decided to eat breakfast at the Aqua Spa instead of the main restaurant - fewer people, healthier food - all round, a good mistake! Because we were getting ashore via tender boats, we had to get our tender tickets in the theatre - we picked up our tickets and were on tender #3 - and #2 had just left. Our timing was great! The tender boat dropped us at the very small port at the bottom of a very steep cliff. We had the choice of taking the gondola up the cliff, riding a donkey up the switch-back path, or walking (sharing the path with the donkeys.) We chose a 1-way ticket up on ... read more
