A few little facts about my trip: In the three and a half months I was away I spent time in 17 countries, 16 of which did not speak primarily English. From those 16 I had the chance to experience 14 different languages (although as soon as I came across a new language, any vocab retained from the last was pushed out of my memory to make room for the new one). I made it as far east as war-stricken Bosnia; from the cool, northern climates of Scandinavia all the way down to the warm, sunny weather of the Adriatic and Mediterranean coasts. I zig-zagged my way across the continent on buses and trains, but I still barely scratched the surface. I tried to immerse myself in the various cultures as much as possible for someone ... read more

The bus ride from Lauterbrunnen to Munich was a big one, but at least we had two interesting stops. The first was in Lucerne, a city in central Switzerland. We had an hour break here, which I used to wander down the river that runs through the middle of the town. I've really come to grow to like rivers since I've been in Europe, and I always seem to like a town more if it has a big, winding river running through the middle of it. On this particular river were a couple of bridges dating back to the middle ages. Walking down the wooden bridges, you could look up and see series of medieval paintings that told various stories - most of them relating to the plague or some other skeleton-causing disaster. The second stop ... read more

The bus ride from La Spezia to Nice was definetly one the most scenic bus routes I´ve had in my life. It took us through tunnel after tunnel, but in between each tunnel were breathtaking views over the Mediterranean. We drove into the French Riviera and through Monaco (The world´s second smallest country after Vatican City) into Nice. Along the way we passed countless number of resort-like houses, including an island owned by Bono. Nice gave me some more great weather while I was there. The first afternoon I checked out the town and had a wander on the pebbly beach. The next day I got up and caught the bus to Monaco. Along the way we passed Grace Rock - the rock where Grace Kelly (the hollywood actress who married into the Monacan Royal family) ... read more

Getting to Florence was a nice short trip, and once again we were staying in a camping grounds just out of town. The first evening we decided to organise a group dinner with the people who were on the bus that day. The busabout guide knew a place that offered group discounts and a decent happy hour. The meal was a real Italian-styled four course feed - Bruschetta, pasta, chicken and ice cream - and it was great. After dinner we all wandered down to the next door bar where we enjoyed a night of darts, quiz machines and karaoke! The next day was dedicated to exploring the lovely town of Firenze (Florence). Florence is all about the art. There were statues and sculptures everywhere and a museum around every corner. After a little bit of ... read more

I think I may have just become a canditate for the 'Tackiest Play on Words, ever' award. The bus trip from Venice to Rome took up most of the day, and once again I was staying in a camping grounds a few k's outside the city centre. It was the same company as last time, so again there were a couple bars, a pool, and a supermarket. It's like staying in you're own little village. I was planning to get up nice and early the next day, because I heard the lines for Vatican City were pretty bad. Unfortunately a night spent at the bar meant I didn't get to the walls of the world's smallest country until 10 o'clock. People warned me, yet I was still shocked when i saw it. The enormous, kilometre long ... read more

St. Johann to Venice

Well, I'm in Venice... I still find it surreal, and rather hard to believe, but before I get into that I'll fill you in on what I've been up to. A short bus ride from Munich took me right into the heart of the Austrian Alps to a region called Tirol. The sleepy mountain village I stayed in was called St. Johann (pronounced saint yo-haan). It was a flat town, but it was almost completely surrounded by mountains. The first day there I spent wandering around the town. I took a long walk down the river, and went for a stroll around the hills. I was staying in Bunnie's Pub - an Australian themed bar that had rooms up stairs. So that night I got my fix for some Aussie music I've been craving for so ... read more

Ever since I decided to go to Europe there was one place, that at one particular time, that i just had to be. That place is here, and that time is now, but I'll get to that later. So from Split I went to Ljublijana via Zagreb. I can't say i enjoyed the transit, but i can say that it was eventful (in a very uneventful kind of way). The train from Split to Zagreb somehow managed to crash into a car. Noone was hurt (or so they told us), but we had to wait a few hours while the police came to do a routine check - apparrently the situation is not uncommon at all. Then the train ride from Zagreb to Ljublijana was crowded and full of drunk people - not a good combination. ... read more

First things first: I apologise for the blatant alliteration in the title - that's just a corny, clichéd crack at comedy. So, from Budapest I took a train ride to Zagreb. I really don't know what i was thinking when i thought I'd just jump on the train at 5pm. I didn't know exactly how long the trip would take, but i knew it wasn't going to be a convenient arrival time to Croatia's capital. Nevertheless, i jumped on the train, and rocked up to Zagreb at the ungodly hour of 12 midnight. Naturally, everything was closed - I've had enough travelling experience to expect this anyway. Luckily i wasn't the only one without the initiative (or a credit card in my case) to pre-book accommodation. I found two Scottish girls who also didn't really think ... read more

Well i'm in Hungary at the moment. Had a very busy last couple of weeks: From Prague i went to another Czech city called Césky Krumlov. The two days i spent there were great, it was the kind of small town you could laze around in and not think you're wasting anytime at all. Césky is home to the second biggest castle in Czech (after Prague castle - the largest in the world) and offers amazing views for those who can be bothered walking to the top (and yes i did - i am not that lazy yet). The town is virtually entirely surrounded by the Vltava River (it makes an Omega shape around the town, or an Ohm symbol for those electronically-minded people), which means in every direction you look there's something beautiful to look ... read more

Back on the Bus

And here i am, back in Prague. I'm only here overnight though, just passing through to Cesky Krumlov. It was here a few weeks ago that i broke off the Busabout itinerary to head off to Poland. I wasn't quite expecting that i'd continue up north until Estonia, and was even less expecting to be spending a few days in Sweden, and then Denmark. But i did. And was glad i did. From Tallinn i caught a 17 hour ferry to Stockholm, Sweden. I got the cheapest ticket i could, so at first i wasn't looking forward to the ferry ride. But when i jumped on the ferry and found i actually had a bed in a room with a few other guys, and that they had a TV, shower and toilet in the cabin, i ... read more
