Europe September 9th 2007

You´ll have to excuse any odd spellings. I am using a German keyboard and it is just different enough to be confusing. We were really impressed with New York! I know many of you have been there, but for us our first visit to times square was one jaw dropping scene after another. We walked all the way from 42nd street to 75th where the museum is that we wanted to visit. We came upon Central Park and enjoyed an explore of it. We visited The Dakota. Right now we are in Bacharach germany. It is the most awesome place. cobblestone streets, cute "old world" houses. Fascinating history. Today we took a boat to St. Goar. We walked up to the castle and completely walked our legs off exploring it. We saw all the battle things ... read more

Dear Bo & Dud, We were quite sad to be leaving La Sirotiere in Vernoil. The awning carpet had gone into jungle mode and, as it made getting into the fridge difficult, we thought we ought to be moving on. Ann & David had made us feel very welcome and as you can see from the photograph we had plenty of space to relax in. Robert & Peter were good company, and gave us a parting gift of a bottle of Saumur Fizz and a lovely card - we shall be enjoying this later on this evening while watching Last Night of the Proms (in France, how clever is that). Our journey to Bois du Tauzan was a good one - we did not use the auto route and as Howard had predicted, it took 6 ... read more

As you can guess from the title 3 day weekends are amazing! It’s so much more refreshing to have 3 days off instead of 2. Jackie and I actually got some shut eye this weekend. We were bums and went to bed every night around 9. We also spent our evenings strolling around Perugia (walking off the hot chocolate and gelato ; ) , reading Jane Austen books, and watching Italian TV. We went shopping on Friday and hit up the 50% off sales in most of the stores. We didn’t actually end up buying much. Then we found the most amazing gelato store in the history of gelato or in our experiences any way. It’s this small little store down the big hill (so you have to walk back up after eating that way ... read more

Well we’ve been here in London for 2 months now so it’s time for an update in the lives of the Roma’s. When we arrived (at just after 5am) we spent more than 3 hours going through customs before being met by Mark’s uncle Phil who had kindly offered to greet us and take us into the city in his black cab. It was really great to see him and get all the goss on the Roma family here in London during our journey into Kensington. He took us to the hotel that we had a reservation at and when we arrived we were still in time for the hotel complementary breakfast, which was lucky for us since the aeroplane food was not flash. Once getting settled into our room and having breakfast we went for ... read more

Today was another day spent at a more laid back pace. We started the day with a late lunch and then headed to the Metro to catch a train to the Coliseum. This might sound easy, but in fact it involves a walk of about two kilometres to the nearest Metro Station! The Metro is definitely not as comprehensive as some other major cities we have visited. When we arrived at the Coliseum we were greeted by an English speaking person offering tours of the Coliseum. For an extra 10 Euro we got a brief audio tour and skipped the 45mins line up. We also bought a picture book ‘souvenir’ (one of only a few bought on the trip!) showing before and after overlays of some historical areas in Rome. The tour was informative yet brief ... read more

We decided to catch a train into Italy from Lucern rather than going backwards to Zurich. This meant we had to change trains at a little place called Arth Goldau. While there was a timetabled connection of 4 minutes, we thought we would play it safe and catch the train before. However we needn't have worried. Switzerland appears to have excellent timetabling with the local train getting in 4 minutes before the international train and departing another 4 minutes after (so stopping for 8 minutes). This gives plenty of time for people to change to and from the international train without holding it up. After our short stay at Arth Goldau we jumped on board the international train where we had reserved seats. The train was very full unlike most other trains we had caught recently ... read more
