2nd September 2007 Cooked pasta dinner and then set off back into Chartres again with English couple from site (Tim and Jean) to go to a clarinet interlude in the cathedral starting at nine. It was an awsome experience sitting in the dark listening to the wonderful music with bats flying around our heads. The conductress was an unlikely, fascinating character and she played in the last song and brought a brilliance to the group. At the end of the evening at 10 we walked out of the cathedral but the best was yet to come. There was an illuminere display on the south face of the massive cathedral. Kalymnos, Greece is Paradise. Plain and simple. The weather is perfect. The climbing is amazing. The water is crystal clear. The food is delicious. You wake up in the morning, and you take the scooter over to the climbing sector. You hike about 15-20 minutes, and voila. Many climbs, at many levels, and some with beautiful stalagtites. Around 2pm, the sun comes out and so by now you are ready to head to the beach. You hike down, change into your swim suit, and head for the water. You cool off in the water, lay by the beach, grab some food, and whatever else you want to do. Rest and repeat. We have now had 5 nights in the Czech Republic and it has been great. Where else can you eat out for all your meals, stay in double rooms with en suite each night and still stick to your budget???. Plus have meaty meals and cheap beer, we have lived like kings! We spent 1 night in a pretty little town called Cesky Krumlov (our favourite in the Czech Rep so far), 2 nights in Pilsen for a beer pilgrimage and finally two nights in Prague, the 'Mother of Cities' herself. We crossed over the border without any problems, the Czech Rep hasn't adopted the Euro yet so it was a bit of a novelty having to get a local currency again. Huhu! Ist das aufregend!! Gestern gab es mal wieder eine Prüfung. Gleichmäßigkeitstest Nummer 2 forderte in exakt 9 Minuten 9,6 Kilometer zu fahren. Die ausgewählte Strecke war eine Schlaglöcher gespickte Schotterpiste nord-östlich von Novosibirsk. Heidi und ich starteten als erste. Wenn wir konstant 64 fahren, kann nix schief gehen. Wir holperten und polterten. Der arme Rekord stöhnte zutiefst. Wir lagen super in der Zeit, doch dann bei Kilometer 4,9 viel unsere Fahrradtacho aus. Keine exakte Kilometerangabe und Durchnittsgeschwindigkeit mehr. Wild drückt Heidi auf ihrem GPS-Gerät rum. „Watt makk ick nun. Watt makk ick nun? Und gibt Gas. Leider etwas zu viel. Und so erreichten wir schon bei 7 Minuten 52 das Ziel. Dann eine Vollbremsung und die restlichen Meter, die uns noch bleiben, schleichen wir so langsam wie nur möglich voran. Und zum zweiten Mal meine persönlichen Anmerkungen zur Veranstaltung. Es hat sich viel geändert. Die Erwartungshaltung der Teilnehmer passte sich der Realität an. Dass wir hier kein Rennen über 13.000 km fahren, ist nun jedem klar. Wir wollen alle gemeinsam eine schöne Zeit verbringen und am 28. September in Shanghai ankommen. Was gar nicht so selbstverständlich ist, wenn man die Wehwehchen der Fahrzeuge und den individuellen psychischen Zustand der Teilnehmer bedenkt. Für jeden ist diese Reise eine Herausforderung und Bedarf Flexibilität und Anpassungsvermögen. Zum Beispiel Anpassung an die russische Mentalität. Der Service ist hier sauschlecht. Um ein Bier zum Essen will gekämpft sein. Die Hotels sind in der Qualität sehr unterschiedlich. Die Aufzüge fahren nicht dahin wo mal will. Kaffeelöffel zum Frühstück sind alle. Wasser für Tee auch.
