We decided to catch a train into Italy from Lucern rather than going backwards to Zurich. This meant we had to change trains at a little place called Arth Goldau. While there was a timetabled connection of 4 minutes, we thought we would play it safe and catch the train before. However we needn't have worried. Switzerland appears to have excellent timetabling with the local train getting in 4 minutes before the international train and departing another 4 minutes after (so stopping for 8 minutes). This gives plenty of time for people to change to and from the international train without holding it up. After our short stay at Arth Goldau we jumped on board the international train where we had reserved seats. The train was very full unlike most other trains we had caught recently ... read more

Venice - 5/9-8/9/07 We arrived in Venice by train from Interlaken late in the afternoon where we headed straight out to our campsite out of town. A free bus ride out, the camp ground was pretty awesome, it had a huge pool, gym, table tennis, restaurant, supermarket with cheap wine and beer and plenty of deck chairs to sun yourself on. Beats an overpriced hotel in Venice anyday! Our first pool in forever, I dived straight in. After a few drinks at the campsite, we met some cool travellers from Busabout including Kiwi Steve, who we met in Salzburg. The next day we headed into Venice thanks to our camp ground who provide an hourly bus service. With good intentions of making our way from the bus station to St Marks Square on the other side ... read more

SNOWDONIA NATIONAL PARK - NORTH WALES Back from Brazil, staying over at friends' places: Celso and Alex. Ana was in London for the last bit of her holiday and was brave enough to be the very first pillion passanger in my new VFR; I forgot to take the padlock off and we both fell with the bike. Ana had to help me lift the bike so that my left foot could be freed from under the weight. Had I broke a bone? I thought so but changed my mind quickily when I got to the Whittington in Archway around 11pm and found the waiting room crowded - luckily the foot got better quickily... Three days after that I was off to SNOWDONIA with Helen and Ed: a weekend of trekking, scrambling and climbing which could well ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague September 9th 2007

When leaving Teplice, we got ourselves out of bed early for an early train connection to get us to Prague. Only to find at the train station that we had read the timetable all wrong and the train wasn't for 2 hours! After some very bad communication with sign language with the lady at the train station we managed to get ourselves a route to Prague - only taking 4 hours on 4 different trains! By the end of the journey we were experts at jumping across train tracks and climbing onto trains in the middle of the tracks. Prague itself was beautiful. I am almost scared to say anything else given how many people rave about it. However, the city did not endear itself to us on arrival. We arrived mid afternoon at the main ... read more

Now we have arrived into London. We found our hotel, the London House Hotel, to be simple, clean with a nice simple breakfast, with an excellent location related to the underground, many excellent restaurants, a shopping centre, Marks & Spencer food store, etc. Would most definitely stay here again. After arriving and checking in, we wasted no time to go downtown to see the sights, and pleasantly came upon an oyster, sea food, & wine fair at Haysmarket. Lots of people, good music, excellent sea food. What a fun Sunday afternoon. Then we went for a walk to the old London Bridge and walked around the castle and numerous downtown streets. The next day, unfortunately Arlene came down with a bad sore throat so I ventured downtown on the Hop on Hop off bus tour taking ... read more

Bruges is charmingy referred to as the Venice of the North by most Belgians I have met. It is one of the best preserved pre-motorized cities in Europe and the historical city-centre is small and best viewed by foot, bicycle, horse-drawn carriage or boat. Bruges offers street after street of charming historic houses and canal ways. The houses are centuries old and at times one can imagine what life in the late middle ages must have been like. Bruges has most of its medieval architecture intact and houses one of the world's highest brick towers, the Church of Our Lady whose brick spire is 122m high. I had the pleasure of enjoying a canal boat ride through the city which locals liken to the gondola rides of Venice.... read more

Da denkt man sich ja nun erstma nix schlimmes ... read more

¡Hola from España! How is everyone?? I thought I’d put together a list of friends and family and email you all what I’ve been up to. I plan to send them out now and then, you can read them if you’d like, forward them or do whatever. ‘no me importa!’ meaning, it doesn’t matter to me. :D My first week in Spain has been wonderful! I live in an apartment with a host family. I have a mother and a brother my age, but he will be going back to college in Salamanca, about 1 hour from here in Segovia. My home is very spacious and has many antique pieces that are fun to take time to look at when I relax. There is a balcony on the upstairs floor which looks over the west side ... read more

Despite the tourist mecca Ireland has become, travellers often fail to head to the north. Northern Ireland, with its recent history of political and civil unrest, is often overlooked as a tourist destination without due consideration of the many appealing aspects of its truly unique natural landscape. As we were to discover, Northern Ireland offers natural beauty on a grand scale. Again, a weekend adventure took us north from Belfast to the city of Derry, once THE hotspot of the 'troubles' but now a city trying to rebuild itself on the backbones of its long history, its unique city achitecture (wth the old city walls still intact )and its emerging identity as a modern, progressive centre. We took a tour offered by a local guide which gave a wonderful local insight into the both proud and ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Bordeaux September 9th 2007

In Bordeaux, we stayed at an Ibis Hotel across the Gironne River, so we got to cross the port de pierre many times! Such a beautiful bridge, especially during night. There was a lot of construction along the waterfront, and the trams are brand new, so Bordeaux is kind of undergoing a revitalization of sorts I suppose. Bordeaux reminds me of Trinidad, Cuba because all the roofs are made of the same material and the the architecture seems similar to me. It's a very pretty city, but can get kind of boring to hang out in. The shopping along pedestrian and tram only streets is very nice though! Saint-Catherine is the main pedestrian shopping street (just like in Montreal, but only without the cars, it's excellent!) Unfortunately, every store it seems we went into played really ... read more
