Now having a last full day in St Petersburg before flying back to Copenhagen tomorrow (it's 9/11 so security may be extra tight), killing time at the airport there for about six hours then heading towards China. We have really enjoyed St Petersburg. It is a comparatively new city for Europe, built by Peter the Great in 1703 after he reckoned that Russia was going to go nowhere in trade and economics without a decent port. He fought a war with the Swedes, grabbed an outlet to the Baltic and built a new capital here. Meanwhile he borrowed every good idea going on building and design, so you find Russianised copies of practically every good idea over the previous thousand years transplanted here. The Hermitage Palace and Museum are mind-blowing with both their fabulous Baroque architecture ... read more

Sorry folks for not keeping up to date with this, but it seems that i dont get back to the hostel till the early morning and leave the next morning to go beat the rush at the sights. So since my last entry, I spent almost a week in the cinque terre. They were lovely towns that had almost no cars. This is especially helpful since everywhere else i have been in italy you hear those scooters buzzing around all night. I luckily met some cool aussies and kiwis, and had a relaxing time hiking, swimming, and laying out on the beach. we tried our hand at fishing although we werent able to catch anything. Now its my last day in florence and i am kinda hurting. I decided to go on a pub crawl, and ... read more

....who are generally tall, well dressed and rather cool. Helsinki is clean and bright if not a little clinical. Unlike our hotel which is a little shabby but in a great location (Jonathan would spend a fortune here - shopping opportunities abound!). The bathroom is the highlight - dark blue wall tiles, black floor tiles, yellow bathroom suite and green toilet seat. Luckily the light is the equivalent of a candle so you can't tell all of this unless you open the door really wide (though it's a bit scary inside with the door closed!). Been to a fab modern art gallery (in fact this is definitely a place Jonathan should visit) and this afternoon are off on a boat around some of the islands. The sun's shining but it's already quite chilly - roll on ... read more

2nd September 2007 Cooked pasta dinner and then set off back into Chartres again with English couple from site (Tim and Jean) to go to a clarinet interlude in the cathedral starting at nine. It was an awsome experience sitting in the dark listening to the wonderful music with bats flying around our heads. The conductress was an unlikely, fascinating character and she played in the last song and brought a brilliance to the group. At the end of the evening at 10 we walked out of the cathedral but the best was yet to come. There was an illuminere display on the south face of the massive cathedral. Slowly pictures were dropped down onto areas of the facade until eventually the fascia of the cathedral had turned to a medieval picture and then ultimately to ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Nuremberg (aka Nürnberg) September 10th 2007

We caught the train at 10:00 am this time, and the whole group went with us, as it was a required group trip. The thing that was most interesting about this train ride was that the train was already crowded! As it turned out, it was the end of a holiday, and school was just about to start, so people were returning home. Most of the people had huge suitcases. So for about 45 minutes, the majority of us stood. Lucky for me (not) I stood in the entryway by the WC (bathroom). Not knowing this, I leaned on the door and just about fell over when a lady emerged from the door (to open the door, you pull in). When we got to Nurnberg, the train station was a lot like a terminal at the ... read more

Kalymnos, Greece is Paradise. Plain and simple. The weather is perfect. The climbing is amazing. The water is crystal clear. The food is delicious. You wake up in the morning, and you take the scooter over to the climbing sector. You hike about 15-20 minutes, and voila. Many climbs, at many levels, and some with beautiful stalagtites. Around 2pm, the sun comes out and so by now you are ready to head to the beach. You hike down, change into your swim suit, and head for the water. You cool off in the water, lay by the beach, grab some food, and whatever else you want to do. Rest and repeat. With all this paradise, one might wonder, Why in the Hell did I book a ticket to Israel?? Well, I have a friend I ... read more

Geo: 55.6985, 21.1473The headache continues ... not good ... For breakfast, we ate the leftover cheese and crisps, and threw in some juice and yogurt for good measure. Off to Klaipeda - it was a rough ride on the mini-bus, and it felt like my brain was bouncing off of the inside of my skull. Not pleasant, as it felt like it was going to explode! It was pretty rainy in Klaipeda - and I made the mistake of getting off the bus too early. The driver also almost left with our luggage - I had to chase after it for a step or two and bang on the side of the bus. We were actually lucky - getting off one stop too early actually put us closer to the B&B, but unluckily for us, I ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague September 9th 2007

We have now had 5 nights in the Czech Republic and it has been great. Where else can you eat out for all your meals, stay in double rooms with en suite each night and still stick to your budget???. Plus have meaty meals and cheap beer, we have lived like kings! We spent 1 night in a pretty little town called Cesky Krumlov (our favourite in the Czech Rep so far), 2 nights in Pilsen for a beer pilgrimage and finally two nights in Prague, the 'Mother of Cities' herself. We crossed over the border without any problems, the Czech Rep hasn't adopted the Euro yet so it was a bit of a novelty having to get a local currency again. Cesky Krumlov was a pretty little town that we read up was a mini ... read more

привет, хороший день !!! This is a long entry, with 34 photos! First I'll write about my last 3 days in Croatia: I spent the Sunday afternoon at Polari camping around the pool because I was invited by the animators, and also monday evening when they had live music there. I hung around and had some drinks together with Andrea, Tonka, Mario, Zdravko and Zeljko. Later I went again to Monvi with Mario and two of his friends. Tuesday we left Croatia by bus, drove through Slovenia, Austria and Germany...and 24 hours later I was home. That day my school called me and said that they've found a new teacher so I don't have do postpone my trip to Ukraine. I took off to Ukraine two days later. Sendly had to play in Donetsk, so his ... read more

Huhu!
