Hello Subscribers to the H & H Blog, Contrary to popular belief, we have not fallen off the end of the earth! We’ve been at home for 12 weeks and it has been like having a full time job. By the end of our first week at home I had handed my notice in to the Children & Young People’s Service. I think that we had both decided by the end of 2007 that going back into in to the bungalow, going back to work and returning to our previous life style, was not going to be an option we wanted to pursue. So, as you can imagine, such changes bring complexities to enable us to move forward To further complicate our plans Dee & Julian (Bo & Dud) decided to book their wedding for Valentines ... read more
Ola Bo & Dud, Just to let you know that we’re well restored and recovered from our misfortune in Barcelona. Howard now has a soft material wallet on a long cord which can be hung and tucked into the most interesting places - beware all pick-pockets you could get more than you bargained for!! So trussed and tucked we made our way back to Barcelona. Over this year of travel we have become connoisseurs of the Red Bus Tour - in Barcelona you get 3 red, blue and green. The red route tours the north of the city, taking in Casa Batllo, Casa Mila and the breathtakingly wonderful Sagrada Familia - we could have stayed here all day, and probably for most of the week. The ongoing development, the cranes, portacabins and labourers just add to ... read more
Ola Bo & Dud, So here we are at Vilanova Park; this is the biggest camp site that we have ever visited, complete with log cabins, static caravans, indoor and 2 outdoor pools, and a small (very smelly) zoo. Our parcella is huge and we have a wonderful view over Vilanova and down to the sea. The town of Vilanova is uninspirational and bland; being only 25 miles from Barcelona and having an excellent rail link it is the home of commuters. Trains to Barcelona are every 15 minutes and it costs €5.20 return - the trains are clean, on time and go right into the heart of the City. Unfortunately, our first visit to ‘suss’ out where to go and what to do resulted in misfortune. We had a really lovely day but .............. boarding ... read more
Ola Bo & Dud, Someone turned the thermostat up in Spain, we are currently getting temperatures in the mid 30c and the sun is extremely hot. It’s been far too hot for driving about in the car and site seeing so we’ve been awaiting a little cloud cover before setting out. Guadalest was top of our list for a visit. This is a historical town perched on one of the highest points of the Costa Blanca - its nickname is “The Eagles Nest”, you will see why when looking at the photographs. Initially, the village was built up around the Castle San Jose; but, an earthquake in 1644 devastated the region and demolished the buttress of the castle. We were able to walk around the east wall overlooking a huge reservoir. There looks to be plenty ... read more
Dear Bo & Dud, What a surprise the Costa Blanca has been to us - a few days in Benidorm has turned into a couple of weeks, which in turn, is probably going to become a month! Our situation is glorious - we are almost in a basin, surrounded by the glorious Serra de Aitana. The camp site is much bigger than our usual choice, the facilities are superb and the parcela is hedge marked, huge and fully serviced. There are two pools (cool water) and I can usually find some time during the day when I can swim alone - Bliss! The Llevante beach and the beginning of the metropolis is about 1½ miles away. Many of the people on this camp site live here; as static caravans are not allowed everyone starts off in ... read more
Ola Bo & Dud, I forgot to tell you about something strange that I spotted en route to Fortuna. We left the motorway just after Murcia and immediately the scenery changed from being urbanized to rural countryside. Standing in the middle of nowhere was a young woman - low top and short skirt revealing more than enough of her body, and with knee high, black high heeled boots. As I was supposed to be helping look for camp site signs, I only caught a glimpse, but it struck me as being rather unusual. I suggested to Howard that this might be a working girl, but he dismissed this because of where she was and we began to speculate why she would be there. Well!! the following week when we had an outing we overshot our turn ... read more
Ola Bo & Dud Semana Santa - my Spanglish is coming along nicely!! We decided that we would have a quiet Easter - not too much excitement and certainly no chocolate, the eating and drinking are far outweighing the exercise at the moment. The Spanish holiday starts Thursday so the camp site was filling up for most of the day. Good Friday and the place was buzzing so we decided to have an outing - we got 3 kilometres! Fortuna is our nearest town, and as we approached we could see the road ahead through town was closed - 2 Firemen indicated that we should take a right turn and Emily (our Sat Nav) lost the plot. We parked to get our bearings and could hear loud drumming - so off to investigate!! I’ve heard of ... read more
Ola Bo & Dud, I never thought that we would be sad that winter is over. As we know from experience it is difficult to get any sort of travel insurance for more than 6/8 months at a time (did you know that Howard and I are on a ‘gap’ year and we have a policy that is intended to cover students), so Torre del Mar is emptying of the pensionistas heading back to the UK. It took us the best part of a week to prepare for departure. We’ve never had the caravan and awning in one place for such a long period of time and to say that everything was dirty is an understatement. I now know why mud walls are called such - I usually just wipe them over with a wet cloth, ... read more
Ola Bo & Dud, ‘The time has come the Walrus said to speak of many things’ and we’ve been doing a bit of debating between ourselves about moving on. There is an air of change in Torre del Mar - the paseo has a workforce of its own, completing a new children’s playground, cleaning and sweeping the beach, trimming the trees and flower beds. The chiringuitos (open air bars) are being given a fresh coat of paint and restocked, the sun beds and umbrella’s are coming out of storage - it’s all looking completely different. The camp site is also changing - the staff are now in uniform (well, a t-shirt that says Camping Torre del Mar) and the long stay, over wintering pensionistas (oap’s) are drifting back to the UK. We just managed to get ... read more
Ola Bo & Dud, We’ve been experiencing a bit of weather here of late - strong winds and rain. Yesterday was just like being in the UK drizzle all day, we only ventured out for a few bits from the supermarket. It’s been a good time for doing a bit of a spring clean of the caravan. Under the bed has become our ‘loft’ and we’ve been storing all sorts under there since we arrived here at the beginning of November, so we’ve had everything out and a wipe around with a cloth and a bucket of hot soapy water. Likewise with the cupboards - it’s incredible how much fluff has accumulated over the last 7 months. Before the weather changed we were able to have a wonderful day out to the Torcal de Antequera. This ... read more
