On the 31st Dave, Chris, Johnny and Neil and I went to Enniskillen for the weekend. Enniskillen is in the County of Fermanagh and was a couple hours from where we have been staying. The town of Enniskillen is actually an island and is between the Upper and Lower Lough Erne lakes. The town is connected with bridges to get from one side of the island to the other. We left Saturday afternoon and once arriving found us a place to stay, then headed to a Pub for drinks and supper. The next day we rented a boat for the afternoon to cruise around the Lower Lough Erne. There are 90 islands on the Lough Erne and most of them are ancient religious sites. Our little boat was no speed demon; it took us all ... read more

Well, the plane flight went better than expected. For anyone who is interested in travelling overseas, Thai Airways is excellent. The service was fantastic, and the food was very, very yummy. London is cold and wet - a nice welcome for 2 Aussies very much used to hot and sunny. We are going to do the tourist thing tomorrow, hopping on the underground and popping up all over the place seeing the sights. We went for a walk this morning into town, and a half hour stroll turned into an hour long trek, just to get to Harrods! Myer has nothing on this place! For those of you meat-eaters, steak was £38.50 a kilo. Double it and add a bit and you get the aus$ equivalent. I'm guessing there's not alot of steak eaters around here ... read more

GK in the uk. The prelude. Well, what a couple of weeks. Having planned to leave almost a fortnight ago, the boys won their way into cricket finals and a change of flights 12 hours before I was meant to depart was rushed through and 9 days of full time slave labour for my old man was the new plan. I have spent the l ast 5 days, 9am to 5pm in carlton gardens at the Melbourne International flower and garden show. Seriously, if I have to dross to another old nuffy about how much she loves her begonias, cymbidiums, orchids, fruit trees, veggies etc I may well have to cause them physical uncomfort! Anyway, all that was done, we had a good show, thanks only to the fact my parent s have at least part ... read more

At last we have arrived in the city that is to be our 'home away from home' for the next few years. On first impressions, Leeds seem big and busy and I must confess I felt abit overwhelmed at the size of the place. But having now had abit of time to orientate and get used to the feel of the place, its actually revealling itself to be a colourful and vibrant city. Large enough to have everything one could need, but small enough to get to know your way quite quickly and to still have a kinda cosy feel. In some ways the city itself is not unlike Newcastle-it's roots are industrial and the strong history of industry is ever present in the city-scape. But it has a fantastic business district with awesome shopping to ... read more

With the weekend over, we were spending our final day in London cramming in last minute tourist stops before heading to the airport in the evening for our flight back to Toronto. Our first stop of the day was Westminister Abbey. Even though the entrance fee for both of us was approximately $50 Canadian, we felt that seeing the inside of the Abbey was justified since I had not been inside in previous London trips. Again, no pictures were allowed inside, which was an impressive space. After the Abbey, we strolled along the Thames and over to the British Museum to see several artefacts including the Rosetta Stone and the Egyptian antiquities. A quick lunch in a pub and a bit more shopping and it was time for us to head back to the hotel ... read more

Monday 26th March Got a wig clip from a Lebanese Edward Scissorhands and lived to tell the tale. I have to look the part for my first day on the new job tomorrow. Tuesday 27th March I had my first experience of peak hour on the tube, I now know what a sardine feels like, the crowds flow like a river and trying to walk upstream is nigh on impossible. After getting off at Bank Station I headed up Queen Victoria Street and found myself a half an hour early. Dammit, could have slept in a bit more! I was a bit nervous to start with, but after meeting the guys I’ll be working with for the next 6 months, who are all pretty easy going, my fears were laid to rest. I got set up ... read more

Day Three Marazion to Lands End 27 miles overall total 99 miles (Bodmin - Lands End via Lizard 89 miles) Beautiful views across to St Michaels Mount when I arrived last night and again this morning Stayed in a very comfortable guest house . Followed the Sustrans road along the edge of the bay past Penzance, the fishing port of Newlyn and on to the picturesque fishing village of Mousehole. Climbed the hill out of Mousehole and meandered on pretty minor roads to Lands End As I laboured up the hill out of Lamorna met freinds from my home village in Wales - Julie and Chris and their daughters were holidaying just down the road. Later on I met them again in St Just! Lands End is beautifully rugged but is ruined by the retail/visitor ... read more

Hey everyone (anyone?!) Doubt anyone will read this but it will be good for me to keep it updated with all the new things I'm finding out as I go along, researching and eventually planning this whole exciting journey. So, the other night (March 29th), I was chatting to some guy about road trips. He was planning driving north-south, east-west through Iran, and I was saying how brilliant an idea that was. It kind of got me thinking; do I want to travel? The answer to that was a definite yes. So I thought, where to? Europe? Well I live in England, its not exactly a life affirming thing to travel an hour on a plane into the middle of France, and come back again a week, a tan and a cultureless holiday later. Australia? Not ... read more

Here is the first installment of my travel blog. In just a couple of days my friend Alex and I will be heading off to Cuba where we will be staying in Havana and Varadero. Then on the 15th of April we will fly to Nassau in the Bahamas to meet up with Sarah-Louise. This holiday was the ultimate nightmare to plan, with various problems with hotels (ending with us cancelling our original Bahamas hotel after reading dire reviews), we were going to do a GAP Adventure tour, but they cancelled on us,a confusing flight to book, squeezing 3 people into a hotel room, booking a flight with a little Cuban airline. I did most of the booking all by myself, so I dread to think how this will turn out, haha! Mum did step ... read more
