Oxford Europe » United Kingdom » England » Oxfordshire » Oxford By thisisjoyMarch 31st 2007The blogs are back and it’s a relief to me that despite working full time in London, I am still managing to get away. Oxford was a welcome break to the city bustle and I don't think I'd quite realised how much I was missing a bit of nature and open spaces! An added bonus was the chance to catch up with some friends from many years ago and to revive some of the old school memories. A big thanks to Anna, Fran & Rachel for their hospitality and tour ... read more

After sleeping off our jetlag, we had a full day ahead of us, packed with more sightseeing and visiting new places. We had a beautiful, warm sunny day so we kicked it off with photo opportunities in front of the Marble Arch near our hotel. A quick tube ride later, we were at Trafalger Square for the National Gallery. The National Gallery was one place I was desperate to visit, having studided art history in university, I wanted to see these famous paintings in person. I always ran out of time to visit the Gallery on previous trips to London so we were determined to get a stop in. The Gallery didn't disappoint and there weren't many people there so we had lots of chances to view paintings up close. On our way to the ... read more

Here's the follow up of my trip to Great Britain in March and April 2007... I got stuck in Carlisle on the north west coast of England for a week. My idea was to visit potters driving along the way throughout Britain. I left Carlisle on Friday around 4pm with cash pounds and pens in my pocket heading south to a place known for its ceramic industry. John, the expat friend with a house in the village where I live in France, had explained to me that Stoke-on-Trent was actually a conglomerate of several towns. He had scribbled in my michelin edition 2007 map of Great Britain and Ireland that I should visit Hanley, Fenton, Burslem and Longton. The electric kiln in my pottery studio (berryhobby.blogspot.com) is tagged Potterycrafts Ltd, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. I was keen to ... read more

Hey guys, I guess you thought I’d abandoned you, or at least this blog. .. Truth is I haven’t really been in the writing mood. I stayed in Glasgow for two months living in a heartless hostel in the centre of the city - while Scottish weather hasn’t been as bad as the Scots make out, the short days and hard grey streets have been depressing. I tried looking for a flat for a while, but after wasting hours riding the tiny subway all over the city I ended up feeling about as welcome as a door-to-door salesman at the Warehouse. People often wouldn’t even call back to say “no”, or worse, would just stay in their rooms while I visited THEIR house. It feels like Glasweigans are quite a closed bunch, I know I need ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cumbria » Lake District March 31st 2007

Wetherlam may not be one of the heavy hitters in the Lakes District but its a worthwhile peak nonetheless offering quality views of the central fells and a couple of ridges to liven things up a bit. I added Swirl How and Great Carrs to the route to give a decent day out. My route started from the Low Tilberthwaite car park which offers the rare advantage of being free. The ability to glow in the joy of a free car park was soon displaced by a strong and chilling wind. The blue (ish) skies offered the hope of warmth only to be well and truly beaten by the wind which felt as if it had come straight off a glacier. Fleece and hat on and off up the path which ascends to the left ... read more

Dont get excited, am still still in manchester! Still havent done anything to prepare expect rub the fact that im gpoing on a months holiday in everyone else's faces! ha ha, so long suckers! Its a very boring nightshift so have come up with more hopes, fears and dilema's for the trip. Am going to have absoloutely no money, but in eternal (perhaps misguided) optimism- have decided this will make the trip more fun. More Hopes: Meet the man of dreams (obviously), who isnt married/ attached/schizophrenic. Being gay might help as well. More dilema's: Do i tell my parents about this blog? Have decided no, that way it will make it far more entertaining and truthful a read, plus I dont want my grandma (or parents) to know about my various drug, drinking and gambling problems. ... read more
