I’m going to put the past two days into one entry since I really didn’t do much today - I bussed to Narvik from Tromso which took up a good chunk of the day, and then spent the afternoon/evening organizing for Sweden and just puttering around the town and mall. Narvik really isn’t that big. Anyway, back to Tromso! I arrived Sunday night - it was raining and foggy. Lovely. My taxi ride to the hostel was funny haha. The guy spoke limited English, but we started chatting about Canada - “ah, donc vous parlez le francais?” Ahaha, awesome! His French was worse than his English (by his own admission), but it felt nice to speak French for the first time in over 2 weeks haha. I of course explained that not ALL Canadians speak both… ... read more

What better place to spend the longest day of the year than somewhere where the sun doesn't actually set?!! Destination Tromso - 72 degrees north of the equator, somewhere amongst the fjords of Norway in the arctic circle, still with snow capped mountains, glaciers and evening temperatures of a balmy 5 degrees is a rather large city (given the living environment), host to the midnight sun marathon. Why not??? I can list a few reasons why not - cold, far away, expensive, 21.1kms - but then the reasons for are much greater than against - Arctic circle! Fjords! Midnight sun! Quality time with great friends! We got off to a bit of a rough start, with 4 of 6 of us missing our already expensive flights, requiring re-booking. However, we made up for the expenses with ... read more

Tromsø is long way from any part of the world : it's 3 hours by plane from Oslo, and took me nearly 20 hours from Tel Aviv, Israel. On 6th November afternoon, I departed with the world's safest and impenetrable security airlines : ELAL to Amsterdam, despite of how many times of the Jews attacks the Muslims, how confused between Israeli and Lebanese, and avoided flying anywhere above the Islamic airspace, afterall the airlines still considered one of the most success and has the safest record in the industry. So where is Troms? Troms is located above the European Arctic Circle of the county of Troms in Norway. Alot of people might easily make this common mistake when saying Tromsø, (including me). It should be pronounced as Trom-saa, instead of Trom-so. When my plane was in ... read more

FROM THE INTERNET: “At a latitude of nearly 70 degrees north, four days’ sailing from Bergen and barely a two-hour flight from Oslo, Murmansk or Longyearbyen, at the same latitude as Alaska and Siberia, between the island landscape, fjords and mountain peaks, you find Tromsø - Gateway to the Arctic and capital of Northern Norway. “Tromsø is situated right in the centre of the Northern Lights zone and is, therefore, together with the interior ice in Greenland the tundra in northern Canada, among the best places on earth to observe this phenomenon. Most of the Northern Lights outbursts visible from Tromsø are green, but large outbursts can also include other colours. “Tromsø was founded in 1794, although the first church was built here back in 1252. In the 1850s, Tromsø became the centre for Polar sea ... read more

It is just simply amazing in Norway! I had it soo good when travelling around this country and I got very lucky with the weather from what I hear which of course makes it a lot better. After a couple of relaxing days in Oslo I started heading more North to a city called Trondheim about 1/4 of the way up in Norway, not a great deal to do in this city so spend the day with my French host walking around the place (he just arrived there as well) exploring. Not a very big place at all this city and since I only had one night there i didn't get to get out of the city into the country which I was really looking forward to. Just the bus and train trips between the places ... read more

Hello Everyone....or as they say here... Hei Hei. (They say it twice very quickly) We left Bergen and made our way to a little place called Rauland in the Telemark area. We stayed in a lodge way up on the Hardanger Mountain Plateau. Please excuse my spelling but we figure you guys probably won't know the difference anyway...:) Our guide, Øivind - whom all the women have fallen in love with by now - told us that every Norwegian is born with their skiis on and a backpack. It's kind of hard on the Mother!! This countryside looks like high mountain terrain. No trees but lots of berry bushes & moss. Cloudberries are the sought after berry here and if you find them, you don't tell anyone where they are. There is supposed to be reindeer ... read more

The Tromso Trip was amazing, It started early Wednesday morning after a 1.5 hr sleep after a massive night at boogies. The adventure began with a 3 hour train trip to Brussels, we had 3 different trains to catch and the second one was delayed by 30 min so we missed our connection and by the time we got to the airport the check in was closed. We raced to the service desk and they gave us temp boarding passes but were definitely not confident of us making the flight. We bolted to security with our luggage we were meant to check in. So we lost a bunch of stuff at security including my leatherman. But after another massive sprint to what felt like the furthest gate possible we made it and the flight had been ... read more

Hi All! Well, what a past 2 weeks it's been I can tell you! Firstly let me apologise for not being in contact any sooner as the internet on the ship went down as we were travelling around Norway. Firstly, I highly recommend a visit to Norway. We're not talking sunbathing on the beach or party-nights but the breathtaking scenery is sure to move the most hardened of people. A glacier in one of the Fjords was an awesome sight. We cruised through this narrow passage-way slowly for the best part of the day, to take in the sights; clear blue skies, snow capped mountains & crystal clear water. One of the stops was Geiranger & a 2 hour trek with my 2 cabin mates enabled me to see the best of the views. The ship ... read more

I'm not sure I have ever seen so many endless clouds before. In the roughly 3 days I have been in Tromso I have barely seen a bit of blue sky during the day, or a star at night. I had been hoping to get a good sight of the northern lights at some point, but with skies like this I'd have more chance of seeing the pope at a nightclub. That said, in daylight, or what passes for it during the winter in northern Norway, Tromso seems to have a very picturesque setting. It is surrounded by white hills scattered with dark trees. I imagine it must be great in March and April when the weather is clearer. Last night I fought off the boredom by walking north through town and crossing the bridge to ... read more

So, after downing 2 entirely unnecessary early morning beers at the Mack (pronounced "Muck") brewery pub, due to there being no brewery tours that day, I took myself off to the Polaria. This modern building houses an aquarium of Arctic marine life. Not the world's biggest aquarium, probably due to its fairly small pool of potential tenants. But reasonably interesting nonetheless. The centre piece is a reasonably sized tank featuring 3 bearded seals. They seemed happy (and fat) enough, but I suppose if you have spent years swimming in circles in an enlarged fishtank, with fresh fish on demand, you don't really know what you're missing out on. It also showed a film of the capture of the 3 tenants of the tank. It may just be me, but it sat a bit uncomfortably as they ... read more
