Memories from the Arctic Circle Adventure
Published: March 9th 2013Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » TromsøTromso, some 350km north and within the Arctic Circle, was a destination that was decided pretty late on as we were eagerly searching for trips in an attempt to catch the Northern Lights. As one of the most eluded wonders of science, I was pretty insistent that we give it a shot to try and catch it. And even if lady luck doesn’t come our way, at least we tried. So glad that we eventually booked the tickets to Norway, as we not only caught the amazing natural light phenomenon, but also had the trip of our lives, which we now still proclaim every now and then: “Ah, I miss Tromso and I wanna go back!!” The trip up has got to be one of the most memorable of my travels, typically related to exploration of ... read more

Ziua 12 & 13 - Tromso - Norvegia
Published: August 6th 2011Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » TromsøIntram in Norvegia, E asa cum am auzit: frumos si scump, motorina are un pret de 6.9RON(bine ca am facut plinul in Finlanda).

Sometimes Barry and I plan our trips months in advance, other times it is a matter of weeks. In this case, it was just 4 weeks beforehand when Barry read an article in Wanderlust magazine saying that this is a good time of year to head to Tromso. Roll on 12 February and we found ourselves on a flight heading from London Gatwick (latitude 51 degrees) to Tromso in Norway (latitude 70 degrees north – some 300km inside the Arctic circle, and a mere 2,000km from the North Pole). We spent 4 days enjoying the sights and adventures on offer in Tromso. During our time we experienced downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking in the snow and searching for the Northern Lights. As the pictures show, we were pretty successful at all of these! We really enjoyed ... read more
De ... read more

Hello from beyond the Arctic Circle
Published: June 29th 2010Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » TromsøI’m going to put the past two days into one entry since I really didn’t do much today - I bussed to Narvik from Tromso which took up a good chunk of the day, and then spent the afternoon/evening organizing for Sweden and just puttering around the town and mall. Narvik really isn’t that big. Anyway, back to Tromso! I arrived Sunday night - it was raining and foggy. Lovely. My taxi ride to the hostel was funny haha. The guy spoke limited English, but we started chatting about Canada - “ah, donc vous parlez le francais?” Ahaha, awesome! His French was worse than his English (by his own admission), but it felt nice to speak French for the first time in over 2 weeks haha. I of course explained that not ALL Canadians speak both… ... read more
What better place to spend the longest day of the year than somewhere where the sun doesn't actually set?!! Destination Tromso - 72 degrees north of the equator, somewhere amongst the fjords of Norway in the arctic circle, still with snow capped mountains, glaciers and evening temperatures of a balmy 5 degrees is a rather large city (given the living environment), host to the midnight sun marathon. Why not??? I can list a few reasons why not - cold, far away, expensive, 21.1kms - but then the reasons for are much greater than against - Arctic circle! Fjords! Midnight sun! Quality time with great friends! We got off to a bit of a rough start, with 4 of 6 of us missing our already expensive flights, requiring re-booking. However, we made up for the expenses with ... read more
