The trip to Tromso from Edinburgh was easy enough as travelling goes. I had a connecting flight at Oslo, which must be the world's first airport to look like it is made almost entirely out of wood. Very slick nevertheless. Also very expensive. With an hour and a half between flights I grabbed a beer and a small pizza at the gate. Came to a grand total of £13. That was topped later in the day, but more on that below. About 30 minutes from Tromso I started looking outside for something resembling the northern lights. The lights in the cabin didn't help, but when I shielded my eyes against the window to block out all of the light I saw an amazing stream of shimmering green lights going the whole way across the sky. It ... read more

The sun shines on small farmsteads nestled among green forests as Voyager sails into Tromso. We’re out on the balcony again and our cameras are clicking. It feels like a return to civilization after a great adventure although we’re still in the far north of Norway. We’ve chosen an excursion to include Kathryn so that she can enjoy some time on land. As we walk to the tour bus, a Sámi woman dressed in the royal blue colors of her native costume walks through the vendor tents set up on the dock. Kathryn asks to check out the goods when our excursion returns. The city of Tromso is on an island, connected to the mainland by a bridge. Our Russian guide, a student at the university (Norway’s northernmost university), describes the area as the bus winds ... read more

3rd June Sunday Trondheim Today Bob and Shân left us. Taxi driver Rune came for them at 9 am which was the exact time Bob had booked him. To get out to the Airport which takes about 40 minutes, it will cost them around 900 NOK. Lars,Val and I had a very lazy day. We saw Bob and Shân off and then I went back to bed, didn’t sleep very well, in fact I stayed awake most of the night. Had a couple of hours. Lars took all the bedding and towels to wash and dry while I was sleeping. Val I think had a bit of a walk. Later Val helped Lars wash the deck. It was neccessary as we haven’t cleaned it for ages. We had a lazy lunch. The fish Val had ... read more

UntitledDavid OGradyThe scenery is just getting beter and better. I am currently in Tromso. This is about 1000km north of the artic circle. There is about another 700km to go before I pass through Hammerfest and eventually get as far noth as you can go (without actually visiting the north pole!!). The destination is Nordkapp... the worlds northern most point (land based). Hammerfest is the worlds northern most town. The curent mileage covered is approx 4500km since England. About the VW Camper.... it looks like this trip has turned into a tour of VW dealers!!! I have stopped at virtually every VW dealer on the way for at least one part or another. The first was a desiel pipe for cylinder 3. (50 quid setback!). Then the auxillary water pump sensor broke!! (40 quid for a ... read more

I've made it to the Arctic Circle! Had an amazing journey to get here, after spending the day in Trondheim... . When I arrived in Trondheim I noticed lots of flags up and barricades set up alongside the road - "they heard I'm coming to town, this is very kind!", I thought, thinking what a welcome that was! But of course the King and Queen had also decided to turn up at the same time. Anyway, as I wandered around town today, I stumbled on the ceremony in the cathedral, commemorating 100 years since the last coronation there. Anyway, turns out I had a front row view of the royals emerging from the cathedral along the red carpet - and guess who they waved at?! (as well as the thousand or so people stood behind me!). ... read more

Day 27: Clear skies: We travelled with this bus line so try them - note dates of travel though. http://www.eskelisen-lapinlinjat.com/en/index.php We had a wonderful 9 hour bus trip from Rovaniemi to Tromso, through beautiful scenery of villages, real reindeer, snow capped mountains, partially frozen countryside of rivers and lakes. In Tromso we had booked into Hotel Ami up the hill with views over the town and harbour. Day 28: Saturday 3rd. June: Sunny then cloudy with a few drops of rain: Brekky included here and it was really good with a variety of fish and fish pastes amongst the most perfect boiled eggs you could get anywhere. When one is in another country, one tries the local food - not Vera though. I tried some of the herring - not bad - and some of ... read more

Úgy dél ... read more
