Another day, in another country. Oh, how it makes me smile thinking about it. I needed to rest to return to normal. All this sleep wasn't helping either. I knew that I needed to find the nearest Casino to gamble my money. I went to Casino Croisette and risked $5,000.00. At first, I lost half, but overall, I profited $10,000.00, by playing blackjack, and some Texas holdem poker. With the money, and a reenergized and rejuvenated body and mind, I rejoiced by eating at a fancy restaurant. The cook was exceptional, bringing the food to my table and sitting down with me to have a ling discussion. After I ate, I went to Normandy, and visited the WW2 beach sites. I talked to a group of five men who served during the war. They were ... read more

From Lisbon we flew to Paris, the final destination of the European part of our trip. Paris is a great city, and probably our favorite city in Europe. It is big and has plenty to do and see, but it also very picturesque, and seems much more relaxed than other big cities. It is also very clean in comparison to other cities in Europe. We had booked an apartment in quite a good location, near the Forum Des Halles, only a 5 minute walk from the river and Notre-Dame Cathedral, and within easy walking distance of The Louvre. The apartment was on the edge of a pedestrianised area, and downstairs were cafes, restaurants and bars. It was all very lively and packed with people during the day, but the apartment was surprisingly quiet at night. We ... read more

Well after the long week of having mom here it was time to get back to my crazy traveling schedule. This time around I stayed within France, which is really something I wish I could do more often because there is just so much to see here. Our program provides excursions, so for this time around we took a road trip to Avignon, France. It has come in handy only having three of us in the program this semester, makes the whole traveling thing a lot easier with our directors. It should be interesting next semester for them because there is going to be twenty students. Anyway, we took a road trip from Antibes to Avignon making a stop in Arles along the way to check out some Roman ruins there, such as the amphitheater which ... read more

Arrived in Chamonix with my snowboard on Monday night and moved into my new home for Winter. Went straight out to the late night snack bar for something to eat and had a complete memory blank of French but somehow managed to order and exchange pleasantries in Italian which was surreal ! Chamonix is quite a scenic alpine town surrounded by snowy mountains. Its snowing here and quite cold already, zero degrees today I think. Until the season gets started properly we are working Mon-Fri with weekends off which is a novelty ! Everyone at the office seems very friendly so far and there a few familiar faces from my winter season 3 years ago. There's also quite a few other newbies so we've been out for apres drinks and office bowling last night for everyone ... read more

Day 60 - Saturday, November 10, 2007 This morning we saw some of the art shops of Montmarte as we made our way to the Basilique du Sacre-Coeur (Sacred Heart) which is on top of a hill and offered gorgeous views of the city (except it was a bit overcast today and not quite as clear.) We worked our way down to the city and stopped at the Laffayette Galleries which was a HUGE department store. And I mean huge! One block was a building that held women’s departments and perfume and stuff, the next block was the Men’s and children side, and another building was the Home side. The main building was 6 stories tall and had a huge atrium with by far the biggest Christmas tree I’ve ever seen! After that we went over ... read more

Well, it's official, the countdown has begun. Two months from now I'll be arriving back in Australia. I'm so torn between being excited to get back, earning money again and finishing my degree, and being incredibly sad to be leaving this beautiful city that has so quickly become my home. I keep trying to tell myself that two months is still a long time, but my subconsciousness is already preparing. I'm having dreams about being back in Australia and waking up a bit panicky, then realising with relief that I'm still here. I guess the best thing about going home is the fact that it'll be nice and hot in January. It's starting to get so cold here, and it gets dark so early. Most days I don't leave home without a scarf, and the gloves ... read more

Heipä Hei! Taas on aikaa kulunut kovasti viime kirjoituksesta. 19.-21.10. teimme mahtavan vuorivaellusretken. Koulussamme on lisäksemme kaksi suomalaista opiskelijaa. Toinen heistä on Pietu, joka järjesti vuoristomökkeilyviikonlopun parinkymmenen hengen porukallemme. Pietun ystävän, Pierren, mökki sijaitsi lähellä La Bessen kylää, Le Sertissä. Ja voitte uskoa, maisem... read more

Wow!!!! What else can be said about ths city? It had everything there.... Really is a beautiful city and we thought it showed it's best at night when all the light came on, truley amazing place to be. Really were rushed trying trying to fit everything in over the three days we had there but think we went and had a look at most sights. The louvre is absolutely massive and we only spent a few hours in there looking around and of course we went and had a look at the Mona Lisa painting along with everyone else in the city. Anyone could spend a month in there looking around but with our limited time we had to pick and choose where to go. Of course we went and had a look at the Eiffel ... read more

Whew! So I am finally back from my amazing fall break trip, which was just that - amazing. Unlike SLU, which considers a fall break to be a 4-day weekend, all of Europe does fall break justice by giving a whole week off for "rest and recuperation". So, I was able to really see and experience a lot in my 9 day trip without any stress of homework of upcoming tests, which was pretty nice. And 9 days was about perfect for me, as I tend to go stircrazy from any hint of nonproductivity after about a week... I went to Paris with my friend Dan's art class, so Saturday through Wednesday was extremely structured and packed with stuff to do and see. We arrived on Saturday afternoon and went immediately to see le Palais de ... read more

Day 59 - Friday, November 9, 2007 It was a beautiful day in Paris except very windy and cold! We headed out of the hostel towards the Arc de Triomphe. We are staying in an area called Montmarte which is an artsy area where many famous painters found their hiding places including Picasso. After we spent some time sketching we headed towards the Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel). The amount of people selling stuff on the streets and beggers (sometimes wearing Nike shoes) really put a bit of a damper on our visits, I felt like we were fending people off constantly. The beggers would ask if you spoke English and if you said yes they would show you this paper saying they couldn’t afford food for their brothers etc so as cynical as it is, after ... read more
