Thanksgiving has never been my favorite holiday. That is not to say that I do not like it; I much enjoy seeing my family all together and sharing a meal, but I’m not a huge turkey or stuffing fan, it involves a lot of traveling on a busy traffic day, and I inevitably end up eating so much that I’m uncomfortably full and sleepy. However, when the week of Thanksgiving came this year, I realized that I was quite sad not to get to celebrate it. There were no Thanksgiving decorations anywhere, and no one was talking about it. In fact, I discovered that most people know that we celebrate it but have no idea why (I actually purposely researched it a bit ahead of time because I figured there would be questions about it - ... read more

Here is the final blog from my 2007 journey. It is set in Paris (despite what the tag says). Due to an unfortunate accident with my photos I only have the ones from the first part of my time in Paris – The gargoyles of Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and all of the other nice photos are gone. After eleven months on the road I was on my way home. I was tired and I needed a break from the free, roving life. Thoughts of home-cooked meals and familiar faces excited me more than the most exotic of images I could build in my mind. It was an unexpected turn of events, but the same ‘boring’ aspects of the comfortable life that I had been living before I donned my backpack and hit ... read more

As I was running thru the station looking for the connectoon which is not listed on the board....panicking and dunno what the hell will I do in Rennes. I found the SNCF staff and the bus was waiting!!!!!!! thank god!!!! So got on and arrived in St Malo, 20 mins later than I told Emelinda, my host... Deserted train station, and no car waiting...... and no phonecard....shit. but then she showed up!!!! she was driving around looking for me!!!! Off to Paris for a long weekend with Kate, Dale and Kates sister, Zoe. Landed at the airport to find that there was a transport strike on in town with only a select few of the metro lines running which caused mass queues and people so jammed in the trains that I really found it hard to breathe at times. We had a hotel booked in for the northern part of Paris at the Anver area - which turned out to be near the red light district. The place was fine and included free breakfast in bed of hot chocolate, croisants, juice, buns etc so even better. From our room we looked out onto the spectacular Sacre-Coeur. Being close to winter, the weather was very cold and miserable but this did not dampen our spirits in ... read more

I would like to apologize for the lack of entries and for the inferior quality of the past few entries in this blog. I really have been extremely ill for the past several weeks, and it just got a lot worse three weeks ago and FINALLY started going back up here last week. I went to a free clinic and got some medicine. I didn’t know that there was a free clinic in Lille. It isn’t like in the States, where poor people cannot afford insurance and, therefore, don’t have it. If you’re a French citizen, you have insurance, and almost everything is paid for, so it’s different. So who goes to the free clinics? Yours truly - immigrants, whether temporary or permanent. They still suck - it takes forever, it’s crowded… some things are universal. ... read more

…Ah, yes, the French love their strikes. Right now, the SNCF is on strike. This time for an extended period of time; it has already been somewhere around a week and a half or so. Some trains are running, but fewer, and with fewer stops. This is, as they say, “l’enfer” (hell) for almost everyone. From the daily commute to work to business trips to personal vacations, everyone is having to come up with a Plan B and C for while this is going on. For more info about why they’re striking (it mainly has to do with the retirement setup in place), refer to any major newspaper. The important part, though is this: though (due to the length and long-reaching effects of this particular strike) there are actually people complaining about the strike, they still ... read more

We arrived in Madrid today but because of a lack of internet access we're going to have to post our Paris blog from here. We LOVED Paris. When we first arrived we had some communication problems with Paulhita, the Sri Lankan man my parents had arranged to pick us up from the airport due to the transportation strike throughout the city. After a few hours, and a nauseating van ride, we arrived in Paris. The hotel we stayed at with Liz's mom was right down the street from our friend Tommy's apartment. Tommy is living in Paris on an Inter-European exchange program known as Erasmus. The first day in Paris we walked around his neighborhood on Monmartre and visited the Sacre Couer cathedral and the Moulin Rouge. We ate a lovely olive baguette on our way ... read more
