I am now at Will’s in the south of France! I took the train here on Tuesday and then Will and I headed to a holiday party for international students at his University. We were both expecting a quiet get together for dinner and instead walked in on a raging party with free alcohol and techno music. Surprise! We didn’t partake in any of the extreme activities but did find ourselves munching on some goodies from around the world (I believe everyone was asked to bring a dish from their home country to share). There was sushi and German potato salad with hot dogs and of course lots and lots of delicious tarts and chocolates…needless to say, I was quiet pleased. We only stayed long enough to meet his classmates and fill our tummies and then ... read more

Hiking Across Provence December 6, 2007 For most of November here in Provence it has been very cold. Even Paris was quite chilly in mid-November, enough to give us pause before going outside. Nothing however chills the bones like the icy Mistrals blowing down from the Alps. The wind is so strong and so cold that many days we just sat around the fire eating bread and cheese enjoying living in France without running around trying to see things. Well, suddenly December came and the winds just dies down , the sun came out and it actually warmed-up. I guess the weather gods just knew people had to get out to prepare for the holidays. With this welcomed change of weather it hit us like a load of bricks that we had limited time in this ... read more

I was living in italy for like a year and half; i did the study abroad thing, tried the job search thing but it didn't pan out so well. trying to travel as much as possible during my stay in europe; usually i tried to go somewhere at least once a month. made some impressive trips so far; been to like 4 different countries in europe and all different kinds of places in italy. been dying to go to paris for AGES, and i couldn't find anyone to go with me. so i would take my first trip COMPLETELY by myself. it was actually a tiring week for me cus i had just gone to vienna a couple days before. went to ... read more

Bonsoir ! Can you believe I've been here a month already and this week we had another 40cms of snow. Chamonix is looking quite Christmassy. The Christmas lights were turned on in town last weekend and there was vin chaud for everyone. Have my saisonnaire lift pass and think I will be out on the slopes for the first time this weekend. Have Fri/Sat off but have to work Sun as we have first arrivals this weekend so the real work begins. So far its been more like a holiday ! Office is very relaxed, last Friday we had finished all our pre season set up work so took out a minibus for some resort orientation via a brasserie for lunch - traditional savoyarde tartiflette - and via Carrefour to stock up on groceries. We've had ... read more

We have been in Paris for 2 days now. Took us awhile to find a Wifi place. We have been sightseeing like crazy. We have walked, taken the bus and the Metro train all over the city. We have seen pretty much all the sites including the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Elysees, the Grand Palace, the Louvre Museum, Saint Chapelle and Notre Dame. I am sure I am forgetting something..... Anyhow, we are enjoying it very much. We have chosen our itinerary wisely, choosing the rainy day to spend inside the Louvre Museum. The Museum has art from prehistoric times up through the famous painters of the 1800s. Everything you every heard about in Art History class was there. Then of course, the glass pyramid seen in the Da Vinci Code movie was neat too. The ... read more

Turning on the Lights Well this week has been an eventful one, which comes as a shock to me as from the outlook I thought it was going to be a borning one wiht nothing happening. Monday and Tuesday were normal enough day, had a surprise essay in one class and then spent hours on skype chatting to Megan as well as mum and dad. Wednesday night was my beckon as we'd organised a girls night of pizza and drinks with movies! Margaux, Tara, Kelsey, Paige and I ended up eating sans esther as she was sick and couldnt stop vomiting?! But after a day of rest she was all better Then Thursday night there was a small party at Gallways which I was contemplating going to with some of the girls when I got invited ... read more

I haven’t had internet access for long enough to write or upload pictures for the last few days, hence the absence of posts. Instead I just kept a blog as I went on my computer, so you will see the first couple of entries are backdated a bit. Thursday 21:00 Today I met my former professor, Jim Skelly, for lunch at a place called Quaywest (pronounced Key West), where I had the most delicious seafood chowder of my life! We chatted about my time in Derry and the disappointment I experienced with the program I was on…he did not seem surprised by my issues with the University. I wrote a letter about my dissatisfaction, and Jim said he would pass on to the heads of school in hopes to get something changed around here…I won’t hold ... read more

So, all I’ve been hearing around here for the past month is how the Fac (or university, if you will) is “bloquée”, which means blocked. I assumed it was a figure of speech—a way of saying that the students and the government were at an impasse, too deadlocked to work things out. This is France…I should have known better. If I’ve been a bad blogger recently, it’s because in addition to prepping for and teaching classes, I’ve been trying to cram obscure English words and math formulas I haven’t used in 3 years into my head so that I could go and take the GRE in Toulouse this Friday. This is where the “blockage” comes in. Patrick kindly took me to the train station at 8 o’clock so I could get to Toulouse for my 12:30 ... read more
