Time for the first update from Fred and Brenda. They set off Monday morning by taxi to the port, and then, well, I'll let Fred tell you how it's going so far (rest assured I will be correcting his grammar before I press the publish button though)... It's Wednesday and the time on board is 10.30 in the morning, same as at home. We left Southampton to the sounds of a school choir singing Christmas carols accompanied by a brass band. Thought they did very well. As we pulled away from the berth there was some four minutes of a firework display. Relaxed that evening and most of the next day as it is a bit choppy going thru the Bay of Biscay. Today is even worse, we hit some kind of storm going across the ... read more

Ooooh, Paris! After waiting for years to go to the city of my dreams, we finally arrived....well, a little inconspicuously, I thought. I wanted ot shout it out, we're here, we've arrived....even if it did take us nine hours on a bus from Amsterdam, where no one else spoke english, and the bus driver kept yelling at everyone in french, about smelly socks, and keeping on shoes the entire trip. Fun wouldn't be the first word that came to mind, but since cheap was, the bus surely delivered on that end! ... read more

Eli onnea Suomi 90 vee näin ranskalaisenglantilaisittain! Viime kirjailusta on kulunut tovi. No, nyt on aika lähteä Suomeen joulunviettoon. Vielä ennen joululomaa pieni "parhaat palat" päivitys loppuvuoden tapahtumissa Grenoblessa. 6.12.2007 juhlistimme Suomen 90. itsenäisyyspäivää. Tiina valmisti juhlaillallisen ja seurasimme linnanjuhlia suorana Helsingistä. Mahtavaa tämä nykytekniikka. Olemme seuranneet jännittyneinä syksyn aikana Maajussille morsian ohjelmaa. Tiedämme siis mistä Suomi puhuu. : ) Nettitv:stä onkin tullut vakioviihteemme. Marraskuussa Tiinan vanhemmat p... read more

Dreaming of a White Christmas December 17, 2007 We never dream of a white Christmas. Living my whole life in the San Francisco Bay Area….those words white Christmas never come out of my mouth or enter into my thoughts. Often, I just think about “getting ready” for Christmas and “getting through” Christmas, never about a white Christmas. When choosing to spend time in the South of France I firmly believed that once again no need thinking about a white Christmas here either. This weather is as close as you can get to the weather in Walnut Creek and still be in France. Scott and I on the way from Barcelona last week were talking about what Christmas has really meant for us this past decade. It involved lots of stress…getting the tree, decorating the house, putting ... read more

Briar and I are now well into our second week of our winter season in the alps. We are both having a great time. unfortunately I have been struck down by a case of campylobacter or the like so things are not quite 100% at the moment. Luckily for moi the toilets in these flash french ski resorts are of a much higher cleanliness than those we are familiar with at Mt Cheeseman! The skiing in not by any means hard the mountains do not seems as steep as home and the steep bits seem to be roped off by the authorities. I am sure I will br able to test myself though. We found out today that we will have our first guests over xmas. It is only 4 people so will not be too ... read more

I can’t believe how the days are flying by here…and how quickly the Holidays are sneaking up! So, for all my die-hard readers out there (and I know there are oh-so-many of you), here’s this weeks installment of new adventures from my Pyrenees home. Tuesday night meant the much welcome return of Christine’s parents. Mamie and Papi, as the girls call them, are so sweet and adorable. I feel like I inherited a third set of grandparents with the family. We had boudin blanc for dinner, which is a poultry based sausage, with caramelized apples and endives. For dessert, Christine made an amazing cake that she insisted was “rate”, or a failure. It was ground up almonds and phyllo pastry and vanilla custard, but since it didn’t look like the picture in Elle magazine, it’s apparently ... read more

Shelley, Jonalyn, and I (Gary) are in London. We’re having a great time and would like to share some of our adventures with you. We will be back in the USA 1 January 2008. Thanks for visiting our blog. After our holiday After we got back from it was “back to the grind” for us. Shelley had to suddenly go to California on business for a week but that gave us an opportunity to send some of our summer clothes back and bring some other much needed items (a toothbrush charger to replace the one accidentally plugged into a 240V outlet, for example) back with her. Jonalyn, a friend, and I went to see the fireworks for Guy Fawkes night. (This celebrates an attempt to blow up Parliament.) It’s not a “bank holiday” (i.e. nobody gets ... read more

The French Riviera epitomises all that is glamorous and fabulous about the south of France, and I send fond greetings from this spectacular part of the world. What a difference a four hour journey on the TGV can make, as I have been basking under glorious blue skies every day, after arriving from damp and chilly Paris on the train. Just as Paris displays in it's glory all that is old, traditional and romantic about France; the French Riviera and Provence show the brash, young and dynamic side of the country. The last journal left off, dear reader, after a day trip to super rich Monaco from my hostel in Nice, and my final night back in Nice included going down to the mediterranean just before midnight. I lay down on the pebble beach while listening ... read more
