Bonjour mes chers amis! I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving, and are starting to enjoy the holiday season! So, this entry is going to be a little shorter, since I have not gone on any glamorous trips, and therefore, have nothing too exciting to share. However, I do want to tell you about my first Thanksgiving in France, and a little bit about my every-day life here. Thanksgiving was truly AMAZING! A number of my American friends (12 of us, to be exact), got together and prepared a pot luck dinner. One of the girls, Celine, was nice enough to invite all of us to her studio apartment, where we put all the food on one table, grabbed plastic plates and sat around floor, sofa, and a few chairs that we could find; it ... read more

In an attempt to replace my devastating memories of Australia's defeat to England with happier recollections, I again headed to Marseille - this time by plane - for Renee's 29th birthday celebrations. I am happy to report success! A crew of 8 of us stayed in an awesome villa at Carry le Rouet, about half an hour from Marseille itself. The villa had great views across the Med to Marseille itself. Luckily for the rest of us, Rich and Rhona (who flew in from Frankfurt - we are such an international crew) had arrived early and sussed out the way to the villa (and Rich had got his desire to drive the wrong way round roundabouts out of his system). Also luckily -despite a late arrival in Carry le Rouet - we managed to find a ... read more

So I was walking home from a friend’s house the other night, and it was about 2:30 in the morning. (Don’t worry, Maman, Lille is a safe city and I pay attention.) It was a weekday, so the streets were deserted, especially my tiny road and the other small roads around it. It was a cold night - cold and dry, and I could see my breath. Then, when I came around the corner to my road, an oddly warm gust of wind suddenly hit me in the face…and it smelled fantastic! It was the smell of baking bread, and it was coming from the corner boulangerie. I could see the lights on in the teeny basement windows, and a man and a woman were kneading bread and talking about their day and laughing. I guess ... read more

This cycle trip starts in France and finishes in China. It is run by the Federation Francaise de Cyclotourisme (FFCT) and is not for charity, it is aimed at publicising cycle touring and also has links to educational projects. Departure is from Paris on 16 March and arrival is in Beijing on 3 August - just before the Olympics. On two days we will accompany the Olympic torch. It took some effort to get onto the list. There was an exhaustive selection process (including writing accounts of rides in French, writing application letters, and lots of expensive medical tests). About 100 participants have been selected. Most, of course, are French. Most, of course, are men. However, there are about 15 foreigners ... Spanish, Canadian (or rather Quebecquois), German, Danish, Belgian, Luxembourgeois etc - and yours truly, ... read more

confusion as we spun around the small streets of Ile-de-Re on bike on foot on auto. it is the land of Julien's family beach house. while it was my second trip to france, it was my first trip to an island there, though spookily familiar. there were other "french" islands i had surely visited... Ile-de-Re is overrun with terrible modern housing developments (pasty white structures hidden behind pasty white walls which are meerly backdrops for industrial art street lamps). there are older, grander fisherman houses left (as his is), and community buildings which offer full or partial remnants of francophone architecture. the very same buildings i've seen elsewhere. on a dusty road leading out of Dakar, and remnants on the large and acclaimed Ile-de-Goree in Senegal, and the somewhat smaller less acclaimed iles drifting in the ... read more

Not What the Pilgrims Had in Mind Today the mistrals are blowing harder than they have in all the weeks we have been in France. As is my habit, I do Will’s lessons in my pajamas and then get ready for the day. Well, today the wind was blowing so hard, Scott had to go outside and collect blown laundry from all around the yard. The wind even managed to unsecure the shutters from the side of the house and they banged against the stone like you wouldn’t believe. Well in the midst of all this the power went out. This included the water pump that pumps the water up to my shower….bummer I was in PJ’s until 4:30!! Well my kids responded to this sudden lose of electricity in an interesting way. Complaining…not surprising…the ... read more

That’s the question I’ve been trying my best to answer all week long to various French people who are trying to get their heads around the concept. I usually give a little bit of the history (leaving out the whole Indian oppression, of course, because let’s face it….the French already have a low enough impression of us), and then go on to explain that it’s a time to celebrate with family and be thankful and eat a huge, carbohydrate-laden meal. I’m usually met with interested but vaguely confused stares and the response “oh, so it’s like Noel”. I guess maybe the difference does seem subtle if you’re not American, but none of this was going to deter me from bringing Thanksgiving in all it’s glory to Pau this year. I was aided in this quest ... read more

Hello Everyone!! So I wasn't too successful in keeping up with my blogs, lol. I guess I was too busy sightseeing, partying and having fun. I also found it difficult to get used to all the different keyboards in each country, haha. I have finally become familiar with the French keyboard so I decided to give it a go. So the last time I wrote I was in Greece, beautiful Greece. My last destination in Greece was Santorini and I was supposed to leave Santorini on the 22nd of September to head to Crete and catch a flight from Crete to Munich. However, apparently Greece gets really windy in September and the day that I was supposed to catch a ferry over to Crete, all the ferries were cancelled!! So I was stuck on Santorini for ... read more
