So this is a bit behind but here goes (by the way, check out the Paris article again to see the attached pictures). After the bustle of Paris it was good to get into the quiet countryside of Normandy. Of course, smaller cities have disadvantages too as I would find. Hopping off the train, I found there was no map or tourist information at the station. I started out to the centre of town, figuring that in a place this small it couldn't be too hard to find the hostel. Eventually I stumbled into a place that looked like a hostel but it was called a "Family House" and it looked like there was no one there. It was open so I waited for a bit and ended up looking at a map on the wall ... read more

Finally, we arrive on the "ile de beaute". Here are all the stories you've been waiting for, and probably some you haven't! The flight from Marsailles put us into Bastia at 10:10 or so. I’d done my research, and I knew that the last shuttle for Bastia from the airport was leaving at 11:00. If we missed it, there wouldn’t be any more. I also remembered from my last visit how flexible the Corsican time table is, so with Hamilton looking at me like I was insane, I insisted that we board the bus at 10:20 and wait. Sure enough, the bus pulls out of the parking lot, thankfully with us on it, at around 10:30. Friday morning was Bastia, where we explored the Citadel, the old Port, and the Place St. Nicolas snapping photos like ... read more

Hi everyone! So this entry finds me finally back at home Chez Canterot after an amazing sojourn to Corsica with fellow Furman French grad Hamilton over the Toussaint vacation! I'm absolutely about to explode with stories about my trip, and I've got hundreds of new photos as well, so in the interest of keeping your heads from exploding with a super long entry, I'm splitting up my break into "Mainland France" and "Corsica". Here's the mainland France edition.... Our adventure started in Pau. I got up super early to go and find Hamilton at the train station, where he’d taken a night train from Rennes. We spent the morning touring around town and visiting the Chateau before we met Sam for dinner. We ended up at a fondue restaurant recommended to me by Dr. Strickland called ... read more

French Immersion November 7, 2007 We have just spent the most meaningful weekend of the last five months. We traveled to a little village just northeast of Gap in the French Alps called Serre Richard. This is where my paternal great-grandfather Victor Audeoud was born. We spent the weekend with the Audeoud family that still lives in Serre Richard. Around 10 years ago, my Uncle Bill, traveled to Serre Richard and located the remaining descendants of his grandfather, Victor. This lovely, energetic woman is Andree Goez, the grandmother of my much loved Parisian cousin Dorothee. Bill and Andree have maintained contact over the last 10 years and she and her husband Herve hosted us to the most fabulous weekend. No one in the US will EVER be able to convince me that the French are not ... read more

"Is it always this warm at this time of year?", we asked the concierge at our hotel in Avignon as we checked out. "No, normally its warmer", he said. But the wind is getting up - the "Mistral". "I've been in Canada in the depths of winter, and never been as cold as Avignon in winter when the Mistral blows", he said. Well, the Mistral's a blowin' now! Forty knots, and we are in beanies despite the continuing presence of sunshine and blue skies. We scooted up to Orange (yes, ancestral home of William, and the current Dutch royal family) via Chateau-Neuf-du-Papes which was a cute little village on a hill full of closed wine shops. We found one which served us up some filthy local product which I would have spat out if there had ... read more

Dearest friends, So this entry is going to be mostly about my recent vacation, but to start off I wanna also fill you in about my life in Avignon since the last time I wrote.... I have finally started teaching, and I'm loving it so far. It's nice to have a job which allows you to actually use your imagination and creativity; it makes going to work kinda fun for a change. Every week I have to plan my lessons for all of the different grade levels that I teach, and it gets a little challenging as most of the students are lacking the motivation for learning, and are having difficulties with the language. So, in order to get them to talk, I have to pick topics which would be of interest to them; last week, ... read more

So it's been quite a while since I sent out my first blog. My plan was to have another one sent out a couple weeks later, but it has definitely been more than just a couple of weeks...So this one may be long! My apologies! :) But enjoy!! A lot has been going on here in France in the past little while! From getting really sick and taking a week off work, to my parents visiting, and then having the kids all to myself for an entire weekend, things have been pretty hectic around here. The father of my French family, Marc, has a country house up in the Cevenne mountains that is owned by his family. It is an incredible old stone house literally built in the middle of a tree covered mountain. Here is ... read more

A day in the high Pyrenees with our new Rando de l’Aubo friends near Tarascon. What a pity the day has dawned so misty and grey. Never mind. We arrive at the ALDI car park which is our rendez-vous point, and don’t recognise any of the walkers arriving at the same time, but it’s probably old fogue memory loss, so rush round shaking hands anyway. One of the group says ‘We know you’re walkers, but you’re not from our group. We’re from Toulouse’. Oops. They depart, and in due course, so does our group, in convoy. We’re last. The car immediately ahead of us loses sight of the ones in front, and soon shows signs of being lost….. Up a side road in Vicdessos, some 15 km out of Tarascon, the passengers spend a long time ... read more
