Heippa! Joten siinä syy, miksi viime aikoina blogin päivitystahti on hieman hidastunut. Kuitenkin viikonloput on pyhitetty huveille. Survival Kitin... read more

Wednesday night 00:25. Ring Ring. SURPRISE! We're going to France on Friday, can you come? Its Free! Heck yes I will! Friday morning after much fussing and hunting for lost and forgetten passports we jumped into a strangers jeep for the long drive and ferry ride to France. We're greeted by a huge converted french cottage (mansion?), loads of red wine, great food, good company and good times. Northern France is beautiful as you can see from the photos, the small villages and towns are so picturesque. just a really nice place to chill out. That said once you add desert wine, port, slow gin, tequilla and cigars in the mix i still felt worse for wear upon our return! Huge thanks to Sarah for the invite and Stuart and his friends for their generousity and ... read more

Annecy is considered to be the "Venice of France" and I know why now. It is such a beautiful city, and once you're there, you can easily forget you live in the year 2007. Annecy is only about 30 minutes from where I live if you take the motorway, which has tolls to pay. I think it's about 6 dollars each way, but you can drive over 80 miles an hour, which is fun. Since we left for Annecy somewhat late in the afternoon (I think around 3pm), we were ready to find somewhere to eat when we got there. Annecy is known for its "Old Town" area, so we found a parking space and walked around trying to find it..which wasn't too hard at all! It was definitely NOT a disappointment and well worth the ... read more

Something the French seem to do rather well is enjoy themselves at the weekend by finding a Fete or Festival somewhere nearby. We’ve been to the Fete de la Pomme at Mirepoix, where there were apple stalls, pressed apple juices and cakes and pastries of every kind that could possibly incorporate the odd apple or two. Tractors that should have been fresh from the museum but were probably in routine every day use processed clunkily round the square, adding a rich dose of diesel to the more welcome perfume of maturing apples. We’ve seen a Heavy Horse Show at Saverdun. French heavy horses aren’t Suffolk Punches at all, being much trimmer and almost daintier but there were plenty of them, and it’s clear that they still have a big role to play in French farming. ... read more

It's really not what you think! It's just that 'Dirty Dancing' (the film) seems to be our Parisien soundtrack, given that Samaritaine and CK have been singing 'Dirty Dancing' songs since we arrived (after a dinner conversation re the film). For my part, I can only really watch, listen or roll my eyes (and sometimes all three at once), having only seen the film once (apparently sacreligious) and not being very familiar with the songs! This French keyboard is doing my head in. Please excuse crazy letters popping up willy-nilly - they're all in the 'wrong' place on the keyboard! I'm also standing up to use the computer, and yet the keyboard is still at shoulder height ... so you can imagine how uncomfortable it is! Well, it's free hotel Internet. I can't complain. But I ... read more

For our last day in Paris, we decided to pay a visit to the Musée Rodin. August Rodin was a French artist, known mainly as a sculptor. The museum came highly recommended and we were looking forward to the sculpture garden. Along with the garden, the Hotel Biron (also on the grounds) houses various sculptures, paintings, drawings and other works that were part of Rodin’s personal collection. We started off with a tour of the gardens. This was definitely one of the highlights of our time in Paris. Not only was it really great to see the sculptures in such a beautiful setting, but we also could be REALLY goofy and pose by every single one. (As you can see from the pictures) After a few hours, we had to rush back to the hotel to ... read more

The beautiful array of Vineyards of the Beaujolais Wine Region are why j'aime la France! Could it honestly get anymore beautiful than this? I went on a Contiki Holiday this summer to Europe, called the European Highlights! A budget trip (which didn't include budgeted scenery), if anything it showed us France in all its natural beauty! Beaujolais Wine Region is a MUST for travelers, especially for the Wine Lovers! Why not travel to this region and get to experience the Wine first-hand, litterally, from the hands that picked to grapes hand you the glass of wine. The Wine region is beyond stunning and so visually appealing your eyes cannot get enough of it. Standing on the Balcony of Contiki’s exclusive Château de Cruix, in the Beaujolais Region, near Lyon, the view is breathtaking, the Contiki "Special ... read more

So Tuesday for dinner we had an unusual entrée that Patrick and Christine brought back from their recent trip to Amsterdam. Patrick ran a marathon there this past weekend (Just a little something to keep them busy between the Van Gogh museum and bike riding). Anyways, Christine sets a plate of what looks like falafel on the table, and tells us to dig in and guess what it is. I cut into a little fried sphere and watch something that looks tauntingly familiar ooze out. I spear a piece with my fork, chew a bit, and immediately know what I’ve got. None of the other girls have a clue, because none of them have spent the past 4 years living in South Carolina. Yet again, my adopted corner of the States helps me on an ... read more
