After three solid days with my knees in my mouth crammed in a bus, I've finally made it to Antigua, Guatemala...and it's about as gorgeous as all the guidebooks and postcards make it out to be. I met up with a Scottish guy, Callum, and a guy from California, Eric, and we're travelling together for the meanwhile. We stayed a night in San Salvador (ten dollars a person for a dirty little room in the slums!). It's by far the most crowded city I've seen so far. The sketchiest being Managua, the confusing sprawl of the Nicaraguan capital offering no remorse to the weary travellers stepping off the bus into a dirty market at the edge of town. Had to spend a night there before the early bus, and my hostel owner basically said don't walk ... read more

"Pura vida." It's about the good things in life that come from what's natural, and Ticos (Costa Ricans) love saying it. And I've loved living it for the past few days. (Mav, because I know you're reading this, I just wanted you to know that they also say "man" exactly like in Scarface. It's awesome. And I say it every chance I get.) As my last foreign stopover before making it back home, I landed at the international airport in San José, Costa Rica, on Friday afternoon and was prompted greeted by rain, which begins like clockwork every afternoon--2:00 in San José, 4:00 in Quepos. (Speaking of rain, it just began to downpour outside of my little internet café.) Leaving the big city, I grabbed a bus directly south to Quepos and the Parque Nacional Manuel ... read more

Well, as tourist attractions go, it’s a bit of a weird one. But I wasn’t going to pass up the chance to see one of the most famous and controversial places in the World right now: the US Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay. It took a lot of arranging. When I was at Sofía’s in Santiago, I had asked her if any of her previous guests had been and how I could go. To my surprise, no one had been but she made some phone calls and we found out that you have to get special permission and there are only two ways of getting a glimpse: the town of Caimanera, which is next to the base at one side of the bay, or Mirador Malones, a viewpoint overlooking the bay at the other side. Caimanera ... read more

Buenos, Its been another amazing week for me. I love the ocean. I spent the last six days on Playa Longosta. It is part of the very expensive touristy town of Tamarindo. We spent our days comfortably tucked away in our tin shack between the huge hotel to the left and the enormous condos to the right. It was quite the humbling experience. The beach was incredible and beautiful shells were scattered everywhere. By day, we worked clearing the beach and swimming and by night we walked up and down the beach in three hour shifts. I saw four turtles, Black turtles and Lora turtles. Unfourtunatly, no one saw a Leather Back. I did see their tracks though, HUGE!!!! At one point, I was overcome with determination to clear a certain area of beach. We were ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Puerto Rico November 12th 2006

Good Morning Sunshine. I'm in Orlando and normally there's lots of it. But today it's kinda cloudy. I was in bed looking at the ceiling and I began thinking about this trip to Puerto Rico that is beginning to feel more like a "need" than a "want. I'm thinking April. Is that a good time to go? Whats the weather like then? Have to check that. I looked up prices on expedia for 4/1-4/8/07. I want to stay in San Juan. Good location? I looked for something that includes airfare, hotel and rental car. There are a few different places and the prices started at around $1,007 up to $5,036. That of course will not include my meals, sight seeing, souvenirs...etc. Before I continue..is San Juan a good location to stay? And..is April a good time ... read more

OK !! ) . Il est donc ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Este » Baracoa November 11th 2006

The next morning, I got up early to catch the five hour bus to Baracoa. Waiting for the bus, I got chatting to Phil, a fellow Scot. We ended up spending the next day together. He’s an interesting guy. He helps run a recycling scheme on a Scottish Island. The five hour journey to Baracoa passes first through the town of Guantánamo, then along the coast. Then it turns inland and goes through some very windy mountain passes. Apparently the town was only accessible via the sea until this road was built in the 1960s! With casas particlares, you can get into a “chain”, where you stay in one house and they can recommend other houses and phone to make the arrangements for you. This is what Sofía had done for me and I was to ... read more

Hi everyone, particularly those thinking of traveling to Xela in Guatemala October 2006 I lived in Xela studying Spanish. After a couple weeks I decided I'd write about my experiences to provide more of a balanced view rather than the one-sided positive stuff I read before going. All I found before I left was either warnings about robbers & pickpockets or positive stuff. who is writing: I'm 56, male, an RN with a Master's and two Bachelors. I've traveled to Australia/New Zealand (1 month), western Europe (2 months), Mexico (numerous times for up to a months each time), Canada (numerous times for up to three weeks each time), Belize, Honduras, and Tahiti. I'll try to be brief and objective. I'll start with an analogy then use numbered points to illustrate. Xela is like a human being ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José November 11th 2006

Certainly now the end of the whole crazy trip is insight. Yesterday i took a big leap forward and moved on from the bubble of South America, and on into Central America. Specifically Costa Rica. The road here was certainly not one of the most pleasnat i've had, but it was mostly my own fault. Sadly it's a fact of life that in Buenos Aires, if you want to go out in the evening, you dont even contemplate taking a shower until 11pm. Hence although I had a flight on Friday 10th at 6.35am from Argentina to Peru, and then Peru to Costa Rica, there was some serious partying and goodbyeing to be done on Thursday eveing. In fact an excellent evening of of cheap but fantastic eating in B.A. Drinks in an Irish pub called ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste » La Habana November 10th 2006
