Well my trip started with some weird days leading up to it. But they’ve been edited to protect the involved. Taking the train home Saturday I called Eric, my ride to the airport. He picked me up and we were off to my house so I could pack. Yup. You heard it right. I didn’t pack until Saturday morning. Oh well. What are you going to do? I was busy and happily Friday night was spent in a real bed instead of my futon. I truly hope this is the start of something new. Anyway. Back to the story. After packing from approximately 1240pm I was ready to go in an hour. Bags packed. Umbrella and rain coat retrieved from inside. We were off to the start of my trip to India for the marriage of ... read more

Asia August 12th 2006

I was lucky to have the chance to see everything one last time, to absorb the atmospheres, to taste to food, feel the sensations of empty Buddhist halls and the sparks of powerful memories. As I walked down the busy streets of Sinchon that had been my home for most of this last year, all vivacity of the newness in this great place was last. In my awareness of cultural differences and recognition of the taboos of Korean lifestyle, I had become comfortable. The familiar streets were just as familiar as they had been several weeks before I had gone to Thailand and that sense of awe in the great unknown slipped into an appreciation of a world that I was able to experience. I spent the last days with Ji Hyang, a friend I was ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hiroshima August 12th 2006

The temperature heats up, the humidity is on overdrive, and all the students are off for the summer. As for me, what summer vacation? Although no students are at school and there is nothing for me to do, I have to be there! I could be traversing the many incredible destinations in Asia, yet I guess instead it has been a summer of saving money, and relaxing in Hiroshima. So, what did I do to fill the rest of my time in July and August? Well, tons! In fact, it was a great summer relaxing, doing fun things, meeting all the new JETs, and definitely doing all things humanly possible to beat the humidity and heat. FESTIVALS Japan is definitely the place to go if you like festivals! Since festivals usually consist of fun costumes, dancing, ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul August 12th 2006

For all of those I met in Korea, this is for you. I Left Bangkok on Wednesday morning, and flew back to Seoul after a short layover in Hong Kong. The last weeks have been ones of adventure, of breathtaking temples, torrential rain, burning whiskey, muddy schools, spicy foods, and smiling faces that shadowed tears. The thought of returning to Seoul was like the thought of returning home. Seoul, in many ways, had become my home over the last months. I found shelter in the temples, peace in the eyes of the strangers, and comfort amidst the towering skyscrapers. The street venders knew my face and the buses knew my stops. I was, at heart, a Seoulite. Previous to my travels in SE Asia, this was where I had spent 5 of the last 6 ... read more

Hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and welcome to Hue… Hue is about half way up, (or down), Vietnam and is the proud owner of the Regal Royal Tombs, (where some royal dead peeps are buried), the ancient Citadel, (the old emperors pad), and some mighty fine countryside not to mention some crazy cool special people. We arrived in Hue quite late in the evening and night fall was upon us. We therefore headed straight to an Indian restaurant for a change of the usual cuisine. Great samosas.. pretty good curry. Then we had alcohol, then bed. Goodnight sweetheart. Goodnight. Sleep tight. The highlight of the next day was a motorbike tour around Hue and the surrounding countryside. I wasn’t driving mind you… May I please take this opportunity to introduce you to Mr Tam. ... read more

If you aren't interested in reading a long drawn out blog then you might as well find something else to do with your time because although I have decided not to put the whole Beijing trip into one blog this is still a very long & drawn out segment. On the other hand, if you are interested then I think you should pour a cup of tea & settle down for a while. Enjoy. On my little sister's birthday (Aug 10th) we hit the road again. Actually we hit the air but that sounds weird so we'll stick with the rubber meets the road saying because it sounds better. We flew with Singapore Airlines & enjoyed it as much as ever & the food was great. When we were about an hour away from our ... read more

Asia » India » Himachal Pradesh » Keylong August 12th 2006

Next morning…the unthinkable happened…I was robbed in my Hotel room in Manali…the Hotel was bang in the middle of the city, yet my camera, mobile and wallet vanished while I was sleeping at night. (thanks to Mojitos at a quaint lovely restaurant the previous dinner, I was sleeping like a baby) Heaven help….was a camera I purchased with a lot of love. The Manali police were prompt in checking how the theft happened, but well….I haven’t got a call from them as yet. Nevertheless we set out to catch the 11.00 am bus after having half a Dimox…which thankfully our mate Guru…the medicine cum computer lover from Bangalore had remembered to get. We had no idea that a Dimox saved us from altitude sickness as we climbed from 4000 to 18000 ft and stayed over night ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Taejon August 12th 2006

The outskirts of Daejon are surrounded by mountains, giving us a great view from our balcony. We set out to climb one called Kegyoksan, which translated means “chicken foot”. We set out in taxis, which took us halfway up the mountain to where the trail started. Taxis are the mode of transportation of choice here - they are incredibly cheap and there are always a ton of them driving around. A little ways up there was a clearing with ancient exercise equipment and a stone path. The stones are all smooth but cemented in so they stand straight up. The idea is that walking on these stones massages the reflexology centers in your feet, thus relaxing and rejuvenating the rest of your body. For the first 30 seconds it actually felt kinda nice, but after that ... read more
