It's sunday night and there's a certain something in the air here that I can't quite put my finger on. I'd been warned last time I was here that sunday nights in Little India can be quite mad, though I can't rememeber why exactly. Looking down from the safety of my dorm window Indian men are starting to crown the streets. sitting on curbs and talking in loud excitable voices. They walk arm in arm or hand in hand down the narrow roads making the whole affair look not dissimilar to gay pride, but no, I jest, gay pride is much more fashionable...thinking about it, Indian men could be the most unfashionable demographic on the planet, but I digress... I've just checked with the waiter, after munching down a delish Byriani, and he's said that Monday ... read more

So its my forth week in Vietnam and I have covered the whole of the country. Starting in the south working my way up to the north. Stopping in eight destinations along the way, all so uniquely different, but all quite wonderful. A lot has happened over the last four weeks but I will do my best to remember the fundamental essentials. The border crossing was like a border crossing should be, a building full and surrounded by Cambodian flags, and fifty meters away another building surrounded by Vietnam flags. We already had a pre-approved Vietnam visa, that we picked up in Bangkok during our second Thailand visit. For those of you reading this, thinking of visiting Vietnam, you need to pick up a visa before you get to the boarder, and it takes a few ... read more

Hi all Well I have survived the first week and all good. Have spent a great week out and about seeing the local sights. First couple of days were looking round temples and visiting villages which was good and generally getting familiar with the area. On Thursday the schedule said we were visiting the local school and we assumed this was to have a look round and find out what goes on ready for when we teach, however once we arrived with were split into groups of 3 or 4 and showed a classroom, once we got to the classsroom there was no teacher to be seen just 25 Thai kids all wildly excited to see us and we had to get on with it for 3 hours. Being completely unprepared it was like entering a ... read more

August 1-12 I check in to my first ever meditation retreat, which teaches the Vipassana technique of meditation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vipassana; www.dhamma.org). Don't worry if you've never heard of it; I had no idea it existed until I went to Dharamsala, and there it seemed like everybody had either tried it or knew about it. It sounded interesting for several reasons. First, everybody had favorable things to say about it. Second, it seemed to appeal to very different types of people; Tiff, probably the most free-spirited person I know; Moreno, a very fastiduous painter; and Brian, a cocaine addict for more than 20 years, all enjoyed it immensely. Brian, who has made enough money to retire, is even travelling to every Vipassana center around the world (there are approximately 100 in more than 30 countries). Third, the entire ... read more

Alles ... read more

I'm now in Bangkok. Was supposed to be in Japan, but the weather there is so bad at the moment I've come to Thailand where it's more settled (even though it's officially their rainy season). Will travel up to Vietnam and Cambodia from here and will now go to Japan in October. I'll then come back to Bangkok and finish off south Asia (Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia) in November. I had mixed feelings about leaving Africa. I'd had such a lovely time and travelling up to Jo'Burg from Cape Town was really good but it was quite cold at times and I was in desparate need of some sun by the end! The south west coast and eastern cape of South Africa are very beautiful. Highlights were Plettenburg Bay where I watched Wales, Dolphins and Cape ... read more

Well...today is my last seep in Chiang Mai. I'm sad but happy to be going. This has been lots of fun but i guess i must get back to reality. So this morning i was up and out the door by 9 and went to the bookstore. There are loads of second hand bookstores here and the book selection is great cause the books come from all over the world. They buy used books back from people then turn around and sell them. I have been reading so much since i've been here and found 4 good books to take on my trip back home. Went for coffee then a manicure and pedicure..cost of 3$..altho i must admit you get what u pay for. But my toenails look allright. ..at least better than they did. This ... read more

Today we woke up at 6:30 (the early mornings are becomming a bit frequent) ready for out sea canoeing. We had our FREE breakfast of toast, tea and a banana and waited for our lift to the peir at 08:00. As promised they were here to pick us up on time, a rareity in Thailand, and after a couple of other pick ups we arived at the pier and headed of into Phang Nga Bay. The water was much smoother than yesterday no need for a life jacket today! The whole area is dotted with little limestone islands covered in trees on their virtical rock faces. There are 150 caves which can be paddled through into lagoons on the insides of the little islands. It took about 1 hour to reach the first stop and we ... read more

yesterday evening i was to the chinese kun opera. it was really great. actually one of the actors seemed to be quite a star of chinese opera and it was a kind of gala evening for her. so we saw parts of three operas (usally a chinese opera could last for 12 or even 24 hours, so that was convenient). before it started you could watch the actors getting prepared and during the performance we had places in the first row and they served us green tea. nice, nice, nice... unfortunately you can't hear the music, i really liked it, though the actresses are quite shrill. still i want to show you some photos. today i walked up to purple mountain (it's more a hill). it was damn hot and unbearable humid. the climate reminded me ... read more

Thursday the 10th of August was easily the most eventful day of my life; Hungover at 5:30am i drag myself out of bed and get going to Gatwick, everything going well until we turn on the radio and hear about the terror scare at the Airport. Slightly bewildered and a bit nervous anyway the boys and I wander through Gatwick, Sam's last snippet of advice ringing more prominently in my mind "Don't die. have fun" hmmmm.. Anyway we struggle through the throng of Daily mail readers "This is simply proposterous, its absolute choas" etc etc and are welcomed into the comforting busom of Etihad airways, quite simply the best airline in the world. Cleanest planes, most amazing service ever. We then land in Abu Dhabi, which is the hottest place i've ever been to. Bear in ... read more
