Asia August 11th 2006

Well its been a few days since I have been on and written. So we arent in Korea anymore. Went up to the Army base in Seol then back down to Osan to take a tour up at the DMZ. That plan got all messed up due to the douchebags called North Korea. The DMZ went to FPCON Delta and was closed to everybody... Oh yeah! Hahaha! This is awesome... The Airforce Lodging didnt have any rooms so we had to stay off base, thats not the awesome part. Anyways we had a curfew so we couldnt walk off, the hotel people had to pick us up. It was like 0330 or some stupid ass time in the morning and we get to the hotel (Osan Hotel or Hotel Osan) and they only had suites left ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Ulaanbaatar August 11th 2006

Dates have got a bit muddled but bear with us - part of this entry was supposed to be in yesterdays...... Spent a fairly relaxing day exploring the city after the train journey. Ulaan Baatar is undergoing big changes with lots of new buildings, huge adverts for electronics and many huge American cars and 4X4's. Things change only a tiny distance out from the centre though and the poverty is obvious. There are many young children running around without shoes asking for food and money - UB apparently has a real problem with street children who live in the sewers and heating pipe systems under the city. It's really sad to see, some of nthem look as young as 5. We bought some food to give to them and it's really amazing to see how they ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala August 11th 2006

Misty hills, serene backwaters, wild life in abundance …Kerala is the very summary of the cosmos. And what stuns the weary-city-type is the lush greenery. We arrived in Cochin and headed straight to Kumarakom…a small ( albeit wealthy ) hamlet 70 km from Cochin. We stayed at the cocobay resort..which is on the Vembanad lake and accessible only by water…so we got our first taste of the backwater. The waterfront is beautiful…with several boats of all varieties cruising along at all hours. Traveling in the monsoon meant perpetually overcast skies …..but that had a charm of its own which we discovered as our holiday unfolded. To our delight we were told that the next day was the famous Kerela Boat race at alleppey (25 kms from kumarakom by water). Thanks to our very generous and helpful ... read more

I'm lying on the floor of a Ger in the Gobi Desert. UB is full of internet cafe's, but i ran out of time to write before we came away. Our last few days in China were a good time, pretty slow - but what's the rush... We managed to spend a fair bit of time fucking around, shopping and packing for mongolia. Moved out of the more touristy area and experienced some real Chinese hospitality, caused a stir in a restaraunt ordering Peking Duck, and had a few beers on the streetwhile singing Hotel California and other hits with a local family. finding the right train to get out of the smog provd to be easier than expected, despite H insisting we get a chauffer (we didn't). We took the overnight sleeper train and it ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok August 11th 2006

So here it is, the final chapter of our amazing, often scary and dangerous, but always fascinating and interesting, journey. I had arrived in Bangkok, my final destination. Having extended my ticket, I timed my return to England to coincide not with my friends Tim and Nic being in Bangkok (as I had them believe), but perfectly with the depletion of my bank account. I arrived back in Thailand with only £30 and Colin, my under-used credit card. (Now I'm back in England that isn't so much the case!) An enjoyable couple of days was spent with the couple from Warwick. Drinks in Khao San Road one day, a visit to the National Museum the next, and an afternoon walking through the narrow bustling markets of Chinatown. Before dinner we found a nice green to lie ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! So to make this blog a bit more exciting to write its gonna be an A-Z of what Marissa and I did in our 4 day visit to Hokkaido. Not that Hokkaido wasnt exciting, it was, its just you get sick of writing 'and then we did this and then we saw that', and come on lets admit it, most people just look at the pictures anyway!!! A is for Air! It was fresh, clean and you could even see the stars, the mountains and blue sky- no haze!!!! B is for Beer We were in ... read more

Asia August 11th 2006

Nearing the end of my 4 month Holiday....I decided to rough it out in the Himalayas in Ladakh....I made an itenary of a jeep safari cum trek to discover the barren beauty of Ladakh....alas i found the 21 day period was not enough to see it all in this paradise created my man and god together.... We (a group of people who met in Delhi) set out from Delhi to Manali in a bus driven by an enthusiastic Sardarji.... man now was this guy the Schumacher of Volvo buses. Thankfully I slept most of the way in the overnight journey….but whenever my eyes were open the man was nearly on another vehicle…like this poor Innova, who must’ve had a sleepless night on a near death experience. Amidst lots of Punjabi numbers we reached Manali at 9 ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Gobi Desert August 11th 2006

We spent 8 days travelling the mongolian countryside in an old russian van, built like a tank and driven by Gana our mongolian driver who was an awesome mechanic. We could have done with him 3 months earlier when we ground to a halt in Germany. These guys lash across the rough gobi terrain which means many punctures, leaks, new gearboxes....Each nite while we sat down, in the ger generally to mutton stew they tinkered away with the mechanics. Saw some amazing skies. It's so dark out there with nothingness around that the sky is so dazzling. Of course as usual could still only confidently locate the plough! Most of the gobi topography consists of rock and dry scrub. Only about 3% looks like that classic hollywood desert which we saw twice-once when we visited ... read more

Asia » China » Gansu » Lanzhou August 11th 2006

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao August 11th 2006

8/7 - 8/11 Our team of six left Bangkok and took an overnight train, to a bus, to a ferry, before we finally made it to Koh Tao (Turtle Island). It was Roy, Jill, Vanessa, Wayne, Jaime and myself. The train ride was a bit uncomfortable, making several stops (some for repairs) throughout the night, but all in all we made it in OK. One of Jaime's close friends from London, Ronnie, has a brother who lives on the island. Jeff owns Choppers bar and has lived in Koh Toa for a number of years. Not wanting to deal with the dozens of hotel representatives waiting for us at the dock, we hopped in a cab (westerners would identify the vehicle as the back of a pickup truck), and headed to Choppers bar, to get some ... read more
