I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! So to make this blog a bit more exciting to write its gonna be an A-Z of what Marissa and I did in our 4 day visit to Hokkaido. Not that Hokkaido wasnt exciting, it was, its just you get sick of writing 'and then we did this and then we saw that', and come on lets admit it, most people just look at the pictures anyway!!! A is for Air! It was fresh, clean and you could even see the stars, the mountains and blue sky- no haze!!!! B is for Beer We were in ... read more

Asia August 11th 2006

Nearing the end of my 4 month Holiday....I decided to rough it out in the Himalayas in Ladakh....I made an itenary of a jeep safari cum trek to discover the barren beauty of Ladakh....alas i found the 21 day period was not enough to see it all in this paradise created my man and god together.... We (a group of people who met in Delhi) set out from Delhi to Manali in a bus driven by an enthusiastic Sardarji.... man now was this guy the Schumacher of Volvo buses. Thankfully I slept most of the way in the overnight journey….but whenever my eyes were open the man was nearly on another vehicle…like this poor Innova, who must’ve had a sleepless night on a near death experience. Amidst lots of Punjabi numbers we reached Manali at 9 ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Gobi Desert August 11th 2006

We spent 8 days travelling the mongolian countryside in an old russian van, built like a tank and driven by Gana our mongolian driver who was an awesome mechanic. We could have done with him 3 months earlier when we ground to a halt in Germany. These guys lash across the rough gobi terrain which means many punctures, leaks, new gearboxes....Each nite while we sat down, in the ger generally to mutton stew they tinkered away with the mechanics. Saw some amazing skies. It's so dark out there with nothingness around that the sky is so dazzling. Of course as usual could still only confidently locate the plough! Most of the gobi topography consists of rock and dry scrub. Only about 3% looks like that classic hollywood desert which we saw twice-once when we visited ... read more

Asia » China » Gansu » Lanzhou August 11th 2006

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao August 11th 2006

8/7 - 8/11 Our team of six left Bangkok and took an overnight train, to a bus, to a ferry, before we finally made it to Koh Tao (Turtle Island). It was Roy, Jill, Vanessa, Wayne, Jaime and myself. The train ride was a bit uncomfortable, making several stops (some for repairs) throughout the night, but all in all we made it in OK. One of Jaime's close friends from London, Ronnie, has a brother who lives on the island. Jeff owns Choppers bar and has lived in Koh Toa for a number of years. Not wanting to deal with the dozens of hotel representatives waiting for us at the dock, we hopped in a cab (westerners would identify the vehicle as the back of a pickup truck), and headed to Choppers bar, to get some ... read more

Today's class consisted of a cultural differences discussion. It started out with our teacher asking us why we chose to come to China. I sometimes do not think the Chinese realize how important their country is to the rest of the world. But I am sure a lot of Americans do not realize how important China is to our country either. Our discussion then led to more differences between the Chinese and American cultures. Our teacher proceeded to tell us about Chinese women and how Chinese men are the happiest in the world because Chinese women do everything they want. Apparently plastic surgery is becoming very popular here, I have even seen advertisements for it on the bus! They want to have more pronounced noses and eye lids and narrower faces. I have noticed that even ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul August 11th 2006

Originally I had planned to visit Vietnam this week, however because of difficulties with getting a Visa (meaning, my travel agent just didn't get one) I found myself with a week of no job, no house and no committments. I decided to head to South Korea. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip. I noticed some similiarities between South Korea and Japan.....mostly in touristy desintations. It could have been the overwhelming numbers of Japanese tourists that did it for me. After hitting up a few palaces and museums, I took to the streets to find the "everyday" Seoul. I had intended to take the ferry from Japan to Pusan....although it would have been really cool, and I hope to do it someday, it really cost the same as flying and took way longer. I chose the easy route ... read more

August 10 After spending several hours in the Beijing Train station I came to realize that I had made one of the main mistakes always cautioned of in the LP guide. I had completely overlooked the xi character before train station and was thus at the wrong station. Offering a taxi driver an extra 100 yuan to get me to the station on time resulted in a harrowing ride through a crowded market place and extreme beijing style driving. Even though I was still 10 minutes late for the train though the driver was nice enough to help me chang my ticket for the next departing train, though only standing room was available. This worked out fine after meeting some nice americans who were also headed to Xian and let me share their seats and eventually ... read more

Hi everyone, I know I promised an epic, but given the feedback I have had on how unpopular epics are I will try to cut down on the words for you all....instead...I have increased the number of pictures! :-) This visit up north was to help kick-start a project evaluation on a disaster management project in Hongsa, Sayabouli province. We flew to Luang Prabang, then the car picked us up and we begun our 5 hour drive to Hongsa. Normally it is about a 3 hour drive, and has been known to be done in 2 hours, but that was in the dry season. Unfortunately the dry season is not right now and we found ourselves on a dirt road going over mountains all along the way. Remember that road I talked about in a past ... read more
