Ady and I took the night train from Vientiane (Laos) to Bangkok this morning, Ady with a dodgy tummy and me with that dose of food poisoning!!! We arrived in Bangkok at 8am and jumped in a taxi to The good old Grand President Hotel, we are becoming locals the doormen recognise us!! As we checked in we were told we had been upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite with a lounge which was very nice... We nipped to the email quickly to check the flight details for Mum and Dad, which hadn't arrived!! After a while we convinced ourselves that they must be flying Singapore airlines as the flight came in about the right time and Mum and Dad are off to Singapore after Thailand... all made sense to us!!! We made ourselves a ... read more

Samir's article. Way back when, back when we were in Hampi, we went to the ruins that lay behind the city with the same tour guide as before. We saw the Queen's bath, temple ruins, palace ruins and an underground temple. The underground temple had a small lake in the middle, water snakes and thousands of hanging bats. Though we saw no water snakes, we did see the bats coming and going through the windows. We also saw ENORMOUS statues of gods with lion heads and elephant heads. A night or two later, all of us kids were really sick, as in kind of sick. Even though we were still recovering from the flu, we took another 10 hour train ride west to Goa, which is where we came from, only in a place called Panjim. ... read more

Tips and What-not 1. There are no sides of the road -- but most people just stick to the left 2. People only honk their horns when they're driving so they don't feel badif they hit you 3. Supply your own toilet paper 4. Don't ride the night bus 5. The world just isn't made for a group of five 6. Ignore the smells (or at least try) 7. Avoid the grape juice, or just ask for it without a litre of foam 8. Fancy restaurants aren't known for their good service 9. When selecting your horse drawn carriage, pick a driver who looks gutsy enough to escape a van full of policemen 10. The "the customer is always right" policy is big here. If someone wants to sell you something, they start by saying "Yes ... read more

Ko Lanta Woke up with an hangover at first light, 80 empty Chang botlles around the tent, and I counted 710 Baht strewn across the tent floor and in my panniers from my little business venture last night - hmmm, maybe I’ll stay for another night here on the beach? I watched the sun rise over the hills behind my tent, it was a magical sight. I spent the rest of the day lazing round, filling in the ‘white-bits’ where the sun don’t reach. You get a lot of white bits cycling. I looked for a secluded cove that got cut off at high-tide, I found one, stripped off, and exposed my white buttocks to the sun. I remember hearing about the ‘Albedo Effect’ in geography lectures, where the ice-caps reflect the suns rays back into ... read more

still excited about successfully sneaking into the hyatt, we came back to the hotel and changed into more casual clothes and headed out into askuasa. we stopped into mcdonalds and tried teriyaki mcburgers. the small here might be smaller than child sized in america. Then we went to the 82 ale house, which was actually a hub branch - the same place as tuesday. we tried some of the house beers and cider and watched soccer. back at the hotel there was nothing on tv as good as monkey man, so we went to bed... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo March 6th 2007

After our walk through the Imperial Gardens, one of the oldest and most traditional sites in the city, we headed over to Akihabara which houses the city’s electric district. Every store we passed had bright neon signs exploded with appliances, computer accessories, cameras, stereos and anything else with a power source imaginable. At one store there was a floor dedicated to televisions, the largest of which was a 103 inch LCD screen, much larger then anything I have seen in the United States. Sitting in front of it I could see no reason for anyone to have a TV so large, as even HDTV displays aren’t clear enough to do it justice. Between stores we decided to eat, and stopped at what looked like a Japanese Denny’s chain, at appeared to be more like a ... read more

after breakfast the same toast set breakfast in asukasa we headed to the Internet cafe to post on this thing. we looked up the location of the melt banana show and i checked where to find bikkembergs in japan. both were in shinjuku. using a mix of map-following and random direction picking we found barneys - no bikkembergs, but they had trovata. we wandered around trying to find LUSH using the same method- this time it didn't work. we stopped in a guitar shop and a japanese guy was playing far beyond the sun. he even looked a bit like yngwie - just less chubby and less sweedish. we asked them where LUSH was and they had no idea. later we found a record shop and asked them. they didn't know either. this must be a ... read more

Something seems to have shifted as we have made our way through India to our third big region, Rajasthan. It feels as though we have been through the tougher part and are now sailing along much more easily. Like eating your spinach first, and saving dessert for last. I last left off with us anticipating another train station. After Katni, our enthusiasm for it was low. Happily, the station in Jaipur was pleasant enough -- yes, the requisite beggars -- but airy and much less intent. We had three young hoods stop and ask, of course, "Where you from lady?" and proceed to tell us that the kind young man who had escorted us to the station was a "very bad man". Of course he was nothing of the kind. While I have stuffed his name ... read more
