It's the end of Chinese New Year, and after 15 days of dragons, fireworks, chinese opera, and paper towers on fire, Suz and I are faced with a decision. What to eat? The choices here in the city of Malacca are endless. It's like having half the hemisphere's cultures available to you in one buffet. What will it be today? Let's look at some options.... For breakfast: Breakfast is kind of a rough choice as there doesn't seem to be any definitive breakfasty type foods here. The Chinese have rice soup, you can always get some Indian Roti stuffed with egg, or just go with the usual western style runny omelet. The Malays however have Nasi Lemak, which we have been enjoying the last few days. It is essentialy a pile of coconut rice, surrounded by ... read more

Dear friends and family! Today was our first day of kindergarten classes! It was quite chaotic with many cryers and clingers. We only had an hour with the kids because we had celebration with the parents. We do a lot of singing at Sullivan. There is a song for lining up, eating snack, saying good-bye, and of course...the school song which starts off " Here we are at school...its nice to be here"...the kids are very cute when they sing. Along with my first day of school, it was also my first snow day! No joke! I looked out the window at about 11 o'clock AM and these HUGE flakes were coming down! It was cold but it still doesn't compare with the Canadian winter. As I said before myself and two other teachers have joined ... read more

Ko samui. Had a mammoth journey from Bangkok to samui. Left the guest house at 4pm and arrived at samui at 12pm the next day. Although it was a hell of a long time the journey was surprisingly comfortable, the seats on the bus were really good as you could recline them right back and we watched Miami vice. The boat was really. Air conditioned and I actually managed to watch saw. (I don’t do horror films; they give me nightmares, yes seriously) When we arrived we had absolutely no plans as to what and where we were going once we got there. Always the best way to travel. The owner of a beach hut resort approached us and offered us a beach hut on lami beach for 350 baht. So split between the 3 of ... read more

greetings and much love everybody! been in the capital phnom penh the last few days now after triapsing down from efferverscent siem riep. while superlatives like imposing and grandiose are employed to typify the very heartbeat and arterial of any country, quite the contrary this capital disproves the very notion. its hardly imposing, most genteel and still in the nascent stages on the road to a flourishing finish, albeit a good 30 odd yrs behind the world we're so acclimatized to. my only gripe is that we find ourselves nestled in the very suffocating kao san rd-esque mould of guest houses, where you find yourself tucked away with deep fried farangs. well the only redeeming factor is the sublime sunset that we're privy to every evening, declining against a backdrop of lowlands while we overlook the ... read more

The first day of hospital began with a 0630 wake up, and a visit to the gym with Balaji. Gyms in India are no different to gyms in the UK. There are the same stereotypical muscle flexor performers who constantly idolise about themselves in the mirrors. There are also the usual cardio freaks (i'm moderate), who run for an eternal something. I remained on my usual treadmill regime which is, just run reasonably quickly for a long time. Simple. There was also a trainer following me around trying to teach me the basics of stretching and fitness etc... I didn't understand his real goal, but at least he tried, unlike gym instructors in the UK!... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Pushkar March 5th 2007

March 5 - 8 We took a bus from Jaipur to Pushkar, via Ajmer. Pushkar is a cute little holy village, surrounding a holy lake - so holy that you can't wear your shoes or smoke down by the ghats (stairs leading down to the water), you can't drink alcohol anywhere in the town, and you can't eat meat - including eggs. It's so holy, yet they seem to have no problem with littering in the holy lake (the water is very dirty) and on the streets. But Pushkar is not without its charm - it is filled with many beautiful temples, including a magnificent Brahma temple in the middle of town. Pushkar is filled with many Israeli and German tourists with dreadlocks and cute little chill out rooftop restaurants where you can sip on delicious ... read more

This week started off at a relaxed pace - the usual cleaning of quarantine and environmental enrichment. On Monday we went on a night frog trek at Kubah National Park, where we sighted many huge river frogs including some rarer species. Apparently it is better to try and find them at night, as their eyes reflect in the darkness making them easier to track down. We also saw an eel, fireflies and a wild civet on the prowl. However the trek involved a steep walk up a hill 900 feet above sea level! We all had our last meal together as two of the volunteers were leaving the following morning (Ryan and Dave). Tuesday was spent feeding chickens to the crocodiles - an interesting experience not to be repeated! Matt the macaque was in a particularly ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket March 5th 2007

Spent most of the day on Patong beach. This is so much busier than Malaysia. There are people from every country here. A lot of Russians. I paid 80 baht for a sunbed and stayed there most of the day, ignoring all the sellers walking past. In the evening I walked down the main road being assaulted by various shopkeepers and massage girls. I went into a scuba diving shop and arranged to do a PADI open water course in few days time.... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan March 5th 2007

Our stay on Ko Pha Ngan has been absolutely glorious...maybe thats why we've stayed almost 2 weeks. There isn't too much adventure to talk about as my time has consisted of lying on the beach, swimming in the ocean, drinking banana shakes, and making a decent attempt at a tan. Seriously, heaven! Linds and I arrived on Bottle Beach after taking the night ferry, a taxi and then a long tail boat. Bottle Beach is a very secluded part of the island with white sand, swaying palm trees, and high mountains on either side. It is only accessible by boat. There are 4 sets of bungalows only. We stayed in a cute little bungalow overlooking the sea. About 6 days later we moved to Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach just for a bit of a ... read more
