Hi everyone! This post is a little overdue but internet cafes with SD-card readers in Nha Trang were almost impossible to find, so instead I'm writing from Hoi An. Nha Trang is a lovely beach town, and frankly, that seems to be about it! The city tour seemed pointless so we skipped that, but instead we went on the highly recommended boat tour of its 4 off shore islands. This full day tour aboard a rickety junkboat was extremely enjoyable if not for the ridiculously vicious sunburns I suffered (accumulated from the previous day on the beach!). We went snorkeling, hung out with the locals (there were plenty of them on board as it was a Sunday), had a nice home cooked meal on board, jumped overboard to the "floating bar".. very very chilled out and ... read more

Contrary to BBc reports, the earth did not move for us!!!!!! We were in a shopping Mall, there are numerous Malls here, one leading onto the other, and as we were below ground at the time we felt nothing. We are very impressed with the helpfulness and friendliness of the locals, as well as the cleanliness and quiet of such a large city. Hotel is great, when we eventually found it. Walking around a HOT strange city at 9 p.m, after a long delayed flight, dragging a suitcase and wife ( she says I can't say that, but I have) is not recommended for anyone , but especially 'old gits.' This morning we investigated Suntec City mall to collect a map or two and came across the Raffles complex - very picturesque and even has its ... read more

Hi friends! We've just gotten back from our mission trip to Thailand, but I am waiting on some photos so in the meantime, here are some pictures of our students doing their stream restoration independent project for IB. They are put in groups with biologist, chemists and physisists (?) mixed together. They spent the morning doing tests on the stream, and then they have to process the results together and decide whether the stream is healthy and some strategies for improvement. You can see our school bus, and the pretty lab that I get to teach Chemistry in. If you are a jazz music fan, my very good friend Rob is playing bass for this amazing 13 year old Jazz singer with pipes like Ella Fitzgerald. You can check her out at www.nikkionline.ca. Its worth the ... read more

Today we promised the kids a fun day (in between Mekong River and Cu Chi Tunnel tours). We went out to Dam Sen water park. We had a great day. This place is just like Wet and Wild on the Gold Coast. Heaps of slides, wave pool, floating tube river etc. Virtually no line ups and all the slides were top quality. No pics, you'll just have to imagine me coming to the end of a slide and causing a small tsunami that soaked some non swimming onlookers at the base of the racer slide. Did some more shopping this morning at the markets. Getting the haggling thing down pat now. Found a Gloria Jeans in town this morning, so guess where we are going tomorrow afternoon. Andrew ... read more

DAY6 We traveled to Bambora (a small village) via Chittaur. In Chittaur we visited the fort and whizzed around in tuk-tuks with highly competitive drivers - a bit like wacky races really! Our accommodation was at Bambora fort in the middle of nowhere - once again our room was in a turret but very palatial even so. This is fabulous accommodation and only wished we had time to try out the pool. DAY 7 Drove to Udaipur, Rajasthan’s most picturesque city on Lake Pichola - the place where Octapussy was filmed. This city is the place to buy miniature paintings (i.e. pictures of precise detail) and we got carried away and purchased a couple of fine pieces of work - not cheap but good value considering they took weeks to paint. Unfortunately Paul joined Alison with ... read more

ok party ppl...I've bein so lazy i've bein neglectin to put any effort into my blog so i hope i can make up for it right now. After spending a couple of days in Bangkok, which I look forward to revisitin again soon,I decided to head off to the more chilled out beach life of Samui...Well its definitly more relaxin but the price of everything here is so expensive in comparision to Bangkok(NOT in comparision to home).I spent the last two days on Maenam beach which is one of the quietest areas on the island. The real purpose of me goin here in the first place was that I needed somewhere to drop off my backpack while I hit up the world famous Full Moon Party on Ko Pha Ngan.I choose somewhere quiet for the peace of mind ... read more

This blog has become a little bit of my diary so I am trying to make an effort to keep up to date. So in a year from now I can remember where I was, with all the feeling, smells, colours, smiles, tears, sounds and longing to go back. We miss India deeply! Nepal is another chapter but I should write about the last three weeks in India. I think I left off in Pushkar when Eneko and I arrived. We found ourselves a beautiful Shanti room at the lotus on the lake in Pushkar. To our wonderful surprise there was some Arambol family there as well so we felt quite at home. We had many 'missions" to do in Pushkar. Eneko had many beautiful gems to make into jewellery and of course he used my ... read more

Hello Hue, its evening and Andrew has slept through an entire bus trip missing the entire spectacle of the countryside. Naturally, like most nocturnal organisms sleeping all day means activity at night. We checked into a hotel that was purple (gay pride colour I know, Andrews choice!). Then hit the Hue nightlife with Cando and Sarah from the bus trip. Nothing like expanding the crew - especially with English speakers. We then discover the local tasty beverage, Huda, is in fact very tasty, it also goes down better and faster than Paris Hilton on prom night. It does not help your pool game however as the girls cleaned us up. We ended up being locked into the bar until the wee morning. We drank the bar out of beer and thus proceeded to the playing ... read more

Pulling up his longyi, Naung Naung proudly shows us the tattoo of a rabbit on his right thigh, surrounded by a faded swirl of Pali inscriptions. "This one makes me jump higher", he explains, his face deadly serious, before pulling open his tattered shirt to reveal a tiger on his chest. "And this one gives me courage!" This goes on for a few minutes, as he shows us a succession of significant tattoos - each located on a specific part of the body - and tells us the blessing each one bestows. I'd read a little about this custom before, (sometimes precious stones and amulets were inserted just beneath the skin to complement the inks and enhance the mystical significance), but hadn't realised it was still practised. I'd read that in times of war, many Burmese ... read more

The week always manages to get away from me when I'm away on these trips! I am now on the endless flight home, about halfway through. The trip was a total success, so I have departed Bangkok with a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. Friday evening was warm and breezy, and the wind lifted tendrils of my hair as I walked along to the barge. It was made of dark, deeply stained wood, probably teak, with an angled roof. A couple of steps up to the dining area led us to a long table flanked by round-back chairs. I situated myself in the middle and this positioned me in an excellent spot for enjoyable conversation. Dinner was a lovely interlude, and everyone greatly enjoyed it. Our experience also included the wonderful sites along Chao Phraya at ... read more
