Welcome to Koh Tao, the most beautiful island I have ever seen! Koh Tao is the smallest island in the string of Koh's off the South East gulf of Thailand. We were a little worried on the way over to the island because our jetty was filled with ppl all going to the same destination. We chose a small bay on the South East side of the island that had three resorts. Our ride there was very bumpy in the back of a pick-up, since there are very few paved roads on the island. Let me rephrase that, there is a strip of paved road about 1km long. The rest of the island has to be reached by 4x4 truck. Our first destination was Ao Leuk bay. The three resorts turned out to be all small ... read more

This blog is continued from the previous entry. The middle of the night on the sleeper train I needed to go to the toilet. This was the moment I was dreading since boarding the train. 3am and a squat toilet awaits. I got dressed shoes and all, as I had been warned about the floors in the toilet. Grabbving my flushable wipes I made my way stumbling downt the dimly lit rattling train. Yes - the toilet was as bad as was reported. I did my business and flushed - imaging my effluent running out under the train. They lock the toilets when we stop at stations - one assumes because a flush ejects the waste onto the tracks and that would be unslightly at the station. I washed my hands with the water on the ... read more

Thanks to Global Warming, it is safe to say that the Japanese Winter is over, and Spring has indeed Sprung. This is not ideal for professional snowboarders (like myself) as there isnt much snow left around the place, but for flower enthusiasts all over Japan, christmas has come early. The cherry blossom is even starting, and if one has to give up snow, its nice to have cherry blossom to look at instead. Blooming Brilliant!! ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul March 6th 2007

Forgive the increasingly brief updates. I certainly am not doing justice to these wonderful places. But I find myself back in Seattle already and ever more complacent to sit on my rump. Compounding this would be my lack of photos or adventurous experiences due to my broken right foot. So again, my apologies to those seeking good info or stories on Seoul, or Japan which will come later. My foot is healing well, a successful knee surgery is also healing nicely, and I will finish strong with updates and pics from my final stretch of my RTW trip, visiting Mexico City and Miami atleast. (PS-if anyone knows any good body guards in Mexico City, please get in touch.) Excuses aside, here are some great photos of Seoul, covered in snow. It snowed the first day I ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang March 6th 2007

So we headed north on a very s l o w bus journey to Luang Prabang. The slowness being due to big mountains and windy roads, in fact there were very few straight bits on the whole journey. We had a bus driver who looked no older than 14 and to increase our confidence the bus would pull in every so often and the "conductor" would throw out some money to men in a bunker armed with machine guns. We are not sure why they do this?, but it may be the tourist companies paying additional taxes to the underpayed armed forces whom are protecting the road from attacks by bandits that were a problem several years ago. Either way we were glad to arrive alive in Luang Prabang (LPB) only seven hours after we set ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai March 6th 2007

In Chiang Mai we took a fire truck (our name for the taxis beause thats what they look like...obviously) to the mai thai boxing. We pulled up outside and before we could even step off the back of the truck we were greeted by a lady boy. He/she took us through into the boxing arena, which was just a boxing ring, with chairs and table around it and lots of bars. We were taken directly to the lady boy bar. The bar was entirely run by lady boys who kept shrieking and posing for photos. The fights had already started when we arrived. There were even little kids boxing. 2 little girls! One much smaller than the other, who went flyingggg when she took a punch to the head. The final fight was a huge swedish ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Pushkar March 6th 2007

Pushkar: no meat, no eggs, and no alcohol but heaps of fun! Especially when you're there for Holi. Holi is the Hindu festival of colour, and like all good Hindu festivals there's no shortage colour, music, fun, and strange behaviour. According to the newspaper article we read in Mumbai: Holi occurs at the onset of Spring when the weather changes for the new season. Traditionally the cold winds brought with them colds, coughs and viral fevers. To offset this, people threw coloured ayurvedic powders at each other. The powders were a mix of medicinal plant leaves and herbs that would ease the ailments that arrived with Spring. Nowadays the powders are all chemical and lack any of the medicinal roots, but still the festival remains and is celebrated by throwing coloured powder and water on friends, ... read more

Asia » Thailand March 6th 2007

Mmmmm yes forgot to say in the last blog, when we arrived in our bungalow after last night we found a sorry sight! We'd been invaded my ants! Being the complete nonces we are we'd left our pizza boxes in the room and the little blighters had come to terrorise it! So we had fun washing them out - quite literally! We vacate our bungalow - after no sleep again and book ourselves onto an overnight coach to Bangkok! We decided that we really did want to fit in a trip to Chang Mai. So we got a minivan to the pier in Koh Samui which dropped us off about 100 yards away from the ferry. We then had to load our bags onto a coach and sit on a coach that drove us the 100 ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Kanchanaburi March 6th 2007

hello all!! bit of a backdated one im afraid- been so busy! got here after bit of a delayed flight coz of some ill man being taken off plane- bit bizarre! spent day in bangkok adjusting to time difference and heat, getting haircut, doing bits of shopping, checking out malls and khao san road. Then headed to Kanchanburi for a bit of culture and history. Visited the memorial for those who died while building the railway between thailand and burma, went to the museum and walked over the bridge- we were bit confused about which one was bombed and which was the original but hey! Had a train ride along the death railway which was cool, and the headed to a beautiful waterfall which Jo and I climbed! We were impressed with ourselves! Spent the afternoon ... read more

My final leg of the outbound journey was last night, an overnight sleeper train journey from Bangalore to my base for the next 4 weeks in Madurai. For me, this leg carried the greatest degree of uncertainty - How would I negotiate the huge and crowded Bangalore City Station? Would my train be easily identified? What would the conditions be like on board? Is it possible to actually get any sleep in this heat? What if I actually slept too well and missed my stop? To cut a long story short, I can’t wait for the return rail trip! The station is mad but as a foreigner you get immediately “adopted” by a station porter who insists on carrying your bag whether you agree or not. He will escort you to the appropriate platform and even ... read more
