Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. The Stout Beer
The Stout Beer
The ice cream (comes wIthout a stick) was good as were the 3 meals I ate on the plane
Made it to Singapore only an hour late after three hours worth of delays, this post is mostly going to be off food as I am ready to get out and go explore for a bit before dinner, mind you it's only 9:30 am right now. Singapore Airlines is great, minus the ABC Extra Stout beer (reminds me of Guinness)...Don't feel jet-lagged either which is good after the 19 hours or so of flying. Had Nepalese food for lunch, then played board games for 4 hours (yes they have a place with nothing but board games... Singaporeans play taboo a bit [View Full Entry]

Thai Coconut!

Well my last week in Singapore.... Monday: Ate many fine delicacies at Old Airport Road food centre, including stingray, rojak, cheng fan, and fried oyster- then went jogging late at night. Tuesday: nothing much... Wednesday; Met some friends from the Soka Association- tasted Penang laksa (exquisite- sweet, sour, delicate- I'm trying not to sound too much like a food critic but It was so good!) Wednesday night- back to work Thursday- 8 cups of Vietnamese coffee kept me going due to the lack of sleep. at 7pm I met a friend at the National University of Singapore to watch a Combined [View Full Entry]

Pre-Travel Blues This might become one of "many" future solo trips or this might turn out to be an experience that will make me forget about the idea of traveling alone. I’ve been trying to motivate myself in the past days to make myself an itinerary or plan a more organized trip … in vain. I had been feeling too down to even want to do anything and I even thought of just cancelling the trip. The past days have not been great but aside from personal stuff going on, this usually happens days prior to a trip. It’s the time [View Full Entry]

one of the only pictures we took...just to prove we went!
A big Singapore hello to everyone reading! Singapore doesn't have its own language as it has so many different nationalities living there so the common language is English! We figured we would do a short blog to tell you about our two days in Singapore and to say goodbye to Asia, all in preparation for our fresh start in Australia where we will be traveling for the next 8 weeks. First off Singapore...so the good news is that we managed to block Ami up enough to get her on our free flight courtesy of Air Asia (they gave us vouchers when [View Full Entry]

So I'm sorry for the recent failure at blogging. Recent events and situations have kept me pretty preoccupied in addition to the normal busyness of traveling. Unfortunately those same events are probably causing a lot of people to want to hear from me, so I'm going to try and give some reasoning here. In case you're reading this and are really confused, I've decided I won't be studying in China this fall, and will come back to ISU instead. I'm actually sitting in the Singapore airport right now, in transit, waiting for my next flight to leave in about 10 hours. [View Full Entry]

Since this weekend was National Day, monday was a public holiday! I decided to seek out some nature....this took me to Mt Faber. This hilly point is very close to the harbour front area and the climb up if definately worth it. Lush forest, exotic plants and peaceful clearings makes a nice change to the chaos of the urban jungle. Views of the city centre, the harbour and the residences and factories of central and west coast are amazing from the top. I spent some time sitting, taking in the cool air and gawking at rich tourists driving up to the [View Full Entry]

NATIONAL DAY: Last Sunday, August 9th of 2009, was Singapore's 44th National Day. Singapore was originally a British colony (along w/ the rest of those islands in southeast Asia) until 1963 when it, along with it's neighboring countries were able to acheive independance from Britain and merged together to form the federation of Malaysia. However this ended up being an unsuitable arrangement for Singapore; so in less than two years they seceded and became an independant Republic on August 9th 1965 (they were recognised in the UN before that year was over). So, being that it is still a ver [View Full Entry]
