Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. Thankfully no Durians - phew!
Met up with the German girls from the tour for a day trip to Singapore’s Sentosa island, a reclaimed island built in the 60’s. I think its Singapore’s only decent beach as everyone advised us to visit it. We took the bottomless cable car across to the island. It was more expensive than the normal cable car by £1 and meant we didn’t have to queue. We sat on the man-made beach for a couple of hours in the sun. The water was so polluted I didn’t swim and the 19 oil tankers I counted in the close distance put me [View Full Entry]

Hi I'm currently in the land of Oz, and internet availability has been expensive, non existent and very slow. I've not had time to blog (some people will have sighed I'm sure). Anyway, here's my sojourn to Singapore.... Hospitality and making your own luck I arrived in Singapore secure in the knowledge that I had a place to stay with a friend. This just goes to show that being nice people not only makes you feel good but also has very occasional tangible benefits. Whilst staying at the Earthwalker hostel in Siem Reap we met Stefanie who was travelling alone; AJ [View Full Entry]

It was a good morning...a very good morning... the hotel not only had free breakfast..but they had baked beans on toast!!! Something I hadn't had for a very long time. It was a very nice start to the day...Unfortunately I then had to check out of the lovely hotel and move to the cheaper hostel. The hotel was included in the tour I was on, but now I was back to being on my own and the smaller budget. The hostel ( called the Fernloft) was lovely. Really cheap only £10 per night for shared/mixed dorm with locker. It also included [View Full Entry]

We left malaysia and crossed the border at the very posh crossing. We checked into our lovely Chinatown based hotel and the headed off for a walk towards the river. It was very similar to the London docklands area, but cleaner. We sat on the river side and I had my first Starbucks. At 7pm we met the rest of the group for a lovely last dinner and a Durian tasting session, which I still couldn’t bring myself to try. The smell was just too bad. [View Full Entry]

Traveling can be a quirky business sometimes. You can travel from sight to sight, forcing excitement and happiness on yourself by way of impressive things to look at or finding fun cultural differences between what you are experiencing and what you have always known. I'm not criticizing this; actually, I thoroughly endorse this type of traveling. When I say "forcing" I mean it in a totally good way. I love the constant excitement and memorable moments you bring upon yourself from never standing still. I think it's an incredible way to learn and gain perspective. But... sometimes, the very b [View Full Entry]

Our flight arrived in late at night and as the airport shuttle took us towards our guest house in Chinatown we were admiring the city lights and the calmness of the place; excited about exploring the next day. As with Hong Kong we only had a limited amount of time in Singapore. Our hostel was ideally located within Chinatown; a hub of activity, with food stalls, souviner shops and traditional Chinese pharmacies. We headed into Chinatown and the smells from all the eateries insantly made us hungry. We selected an organic vegetarian restaurant and tucked into an amazing meal of fresh [View Full Entry]
