Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. Week 3 Asia » Singapore
Week 3, I spent the last 5 days at Laura's house. we ate our way through practically every good restaurant in Singapore. I feel like little miss piggy now! She discovered (after staying at this place for months on end) that there's a steam room right near the main pool (there are 6 pools in her dad's apartment complex) So we spent every day in there, willing ourselves to be as thin as Kate Moss... jks I did forget to tell my new roomate Jana, that I wasn't going to be home for the next few days (it really was a [View Full Entry]

In between Borneo and Java I thought I'd stop over for a couple of days in Sunny Singapore. I stayed at the Cozy Corners Backpackers where I usually stay because its about the cheapest place in town. I've been going there for five years now and it hasn't changed one jot in that whole time, from the broken tap to the soccer flags on the wall. Because its Singapore there are also lots of warning signs posted everywhere about what you're not allowed to do, from spending too long on the internet to downloading illegal material to washing your clothes(!). There's [View Full Entry]

Singapore. If someone had sat me down a few days ago and tried to educate me on the sheer number of shopping malls in Singapore there is no way that I would ever have understood. It really is completely mental!!! The amount of wealth here is ridiculous which being me I can only describe as suspicious. I'm yet to do my research but for a country who has only had their independence from Malaysia for 44 years they are incredibbly rich. Their high rise banking district is home to no less than 180 international banks, everywhere you walk you are attacked [View Full Entry]

Much to my regret, most of my journeys seem to start with a flight. This one was a little different. It started with three flights and a boat ride. On Friday, Cisca and I sat at Heathrow airport. We had checked in and Turkish Airlines accepted our 33 kilos each without demur. (30kg allowance). This had been a close run thing. The night before we flew out, Mac informed me that we had no working boats in the Dive Centre and no working vehicles. (Except for our 50 year old fire engine, but her main pump is not working). I walked [View Full Entry]

What Singapore looks life from the pub

Since Qantas (using their budget subsidiary called JetStar) no longer cover the route from Bali to Singapore, they had booked us onto a Singapore Airlines flight instead. We were very impressed by the moist towels, three choices for lunch, unlimited beverages and in flight movies especially since the flight was only two and a half hours. I was only finishing my tiramisu when we began our descent. We had heard that Singapore was a very practical, functional and efficiently run city, the first example of this was at the airport. Travellators everywhere, very clear signs, no queue at immigrat [View Full Entry]

Spent a couple of nice days in Singapore, a complete contrast to India as it’s practically Consumer Heaven (not that we could afford to buy anything, but browsing was fun). We did the Duck Tour - an amphibious vehicle that takes you both around the city and into the river, past the big wheel (copy cats!), the Helix Bridge and the huge casino development. We also saw where they were preparing for the Grand Prix which took place a couple of weeks later. Afternoon tea at Raffles, dahling, where Joe was in his element! The next day we went to Singapore [View Full Entry]

Barbie Lu and I at Azzura club opening
My second weekend here, was supposed to be going to HK for the weekend, but we couldn't get flights back to Singapore early enough, so it was a no go. Our backup plan was to go to Siloso beach, Sentosa for the opening of a new beach club. They had banana boat rides, dinner and drinks. not to mention a very nice beach setting with pool, bar, dj's and all my friends. The music was great, and got better with the night. from chillout house beach tunes to progressive, Barbie and I were loving it. We played beach ball for a [View Full Entry]

Across from where we stayed
I'm finally back from Singapore! I was there from Sept 6th - Sept 13th. I hand wrote notes and things that we did each day, so I could type it up when I got home. Sept. 6: We flew out of Perth around midnight and got into Singapore early in the morning. We went to the place we stayed and slept until about noon. We just wandered around when we finally got up and checked out the area right around the place and got dinner at a Hawker center - which are a cheap Asian food courts in Singapore. Sept 7: [View Full Entry]

Friday 11th September 2009 Breakfast in Kota Kinabalu, lunch in the air, dinner in Singapore. The life of a pair of international jet-setters! After breakfast in the hostel (Summer Lodge) in KK, we went out to the airport and returned the car. We told the agent that it would be a good idea to take it to a mechanic but he wasn't very interested. Arriving at Singapore Changi Airport, we went quickly through immigration and customs. We found the 'Singapore Stopover' desk and checked in, getting our free passes, transfer vouchers and some lovely “Singapore Stopover” [View Full Entry]
