| Is the train from Singapore to Bangkok worth the 48 hours that it takes? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
jake1234 John Post Count: 4 Msg: #1 304 days ago, January 26th 2009 | Hey all - | I have about one month to spend in SE Asia from March 16 - April 16. I'll be in India for a couple weeks prior and will fly into either Singapore or Bangkok. I want to see Thailand and Vietnam for sure. If I fly into Singapore I'm considering taking the train to Bangkok. From there I'll probably fly one-way into Ho Chi Min or Hanoi, I'm not sure yet (the overland routes through Cambodia sound a little too dangerous for an American (?)). I know the train to Bangkok takes a couple days. Has anyone done this and is it worth the time? If I stop for a couple days along the way this could add 4-5 days onto to an already tight trip and I'm just not sure if it would be worth it. Any advice is much appreesh. thanks - Mell Mell Post Count: 13894 Msg: #2 304 days ago, January 26th 2009 | Hello John | 48 hours is kinda long unless you are tired or something and fancy sitting still for a couple of days, reading and sleeping. Is there a reason why you are not flying? Is there a big difference between the cost of train and plane or what? Mel jake1234 John Post Count: 4 Msg: #3 304 days ago, January 26th 2009 | Thanks Mell - I don't really need to be in Singapore at all. I just need a base to fly roundtrip from Delhi. I figured that since I'm there maybe the train would be a cool way to get to Bangkok. Its actually cheaper to fly RT into Bangkok so that's probably what I'll do. Thanks again.. | Ant and Allee Ant and Allee Post Count: 65 Msg: #4 303 days ago, January 27th 2009 | The overland route through Cambodia is not dangerous in the slightest. As with other countries in the region, Cambodians are absolutely fantastic. They are always friendly and polite. | Consider getting a bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. From there you can fly cheaply with Air Asia to pretty much anywhere in the region. Air Asia do also fly out of Singapore but I think the choice of destination is more restricted. Otherwise, you shouldn't just overlook Singapore - It's a great place to spend a few days...
