We all did Peak Performance Buoyancy today, we had to try and get our buoyancy better by using our breathing to go up and down. Then we had to swim through hoops, do somersaults and handstands. Then we had team basket ball, all of us were down there, I scored once for my team and then got kicked in the face with someone's fin! It was difficult to work out who was on your team anyway, as everyone looks the same with their masks on! It got quite aggresive which made it really funny, I was just laughing all the time, so my mask kept filling up with water. People had their regulators kicked out of their mouths and when Katherine came up her hand was bleeding! Paysee (the big boss) said she thought it would ... read more

These entries are gonna be abit vague because I havn't updated anything for ages! After the jungle we caught another bus upto the East coast where we caught a high speed boat to the islands. The weather was amazing so we were loving chilling on the beach because since we arrived in Asia it had been overcast most the time... I decided to do my Advanced scuba diving course which was excellent. The diving was amazing and I saw loads of different fish, including a shark and turtle which was cool. I also went on a night dive which was certainly an experience! Apart from the diving we just hung about on the beach because theres really not alot else to do there. Justin decided to head back to the mainland so he could get the ... read more

Had a fantastic night last night, we all stayed in the Panorama chalets, shared a massive room with sarah, Liz, Katie and Gemma. The bathroom was extremely pink and we had seats shaped like hands! We were all very exciteable, it was luxury compared to our huts at Bubbles and we all decided we wanted to stay forever. We stayed in the room for a while talking, then Sarah, Katie and I decided to go and explore. We bumped in to Kate and Fran then went and looked in shops and walked along the beach. We found Katherine and Julie at a bar drinking cocktails, so obviously I felt obliged to join them, treated myself to a Cosmopolitan. We all got dressed up for the evening, and just as we were about to leave the room ... read more

Did the 1 til 5am shift this morning, did it with Julie instead of Gemma as she had to get up early to take some guests out snorkelling. We just played Uno all night, we didn't see any turtles but we did see five rats!!! Kenneth and Harick taught us all to skin dive, we had our fins, masks and snorkels and had to take a deep breath and swim down to just above the coral, then come up for air when you need it, we have to collect Drupella, which is a purple shell with a yucky snail thing inside which eats the coral. Found it really hard to spot them at first but once I got going I found quite a few. Glad I know how to do it now though as I will ... read more

On Wed night Julie and I did the late night turtle watch from 1am-5am which was a test of endurance! It was OK as we were playing Uno, but around 3am we were both falling asleep at the table - every now and again one of us would say to the other 'It's your turn'! We were a bit spooked patrolling the beach in the darkness, the beach lit up every so often by flashes of lightening from the distance. We were speed walking by the end of it! No sign of the turtles either hatching (which are due any day now!!) or any mommas coming up from the sea. Got to bed at 5 only to find the BIGGEST spider i've ever seen (called Strider) right next to the lightswitch! I nearly touched it argh! ... read more

Had a fantastic day today, after a wrote my last blog I went snorkelling with Fran and Katherine but the current was really strong so we soon came back, plus I'm sure a shark was giving me the evil eye so I was pleased when we got back on to the beach. A bit later on Harick (works here) asked if any of us wanted to go for another snokel, Liz and I went with him and I saw TWO TURTLES!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were both female, Olive Ridley's which are very rare, the first one was quite big and swam right below me. They were so beautiful and I couldn't wait to get back to the beach and tell everyone, we ended up swimming for ages, I think about 2 hours and went quite far out. Tonight ... read more

I've been away for just over a week now, so I'll update you on my adventure so far. Had a fab flight over to KL via Singapore but when I arrived my luggage had not! Went to my hostel in the heart of Kuala Lumpur where I met some of the people who would be on my volunteer project. Had some sleep then we all went out for dinner. Got up early the next morning to go back to KL airport to catch our flight to Kotu Bharu, luckily my luggage had been found! So was v happy, checked it in for next flight but once we had boarded we were told we had to get off due to technical difficulties, we waited an hour then got on the flight. We then took a 40 min ... read more

Two tropical islands, aquamarine clear warm waters, golden sands, tropical forests, amazing coral reefs, thriving marine life...beaches to suit all...from the quiet romantic retreats for the wealthy, to the socialable backpacker's destination of Long Beach, complete with chalets (and shacks!), restaurants, dive centres and snorkling trips...that's where I have just spent the last six days, and they have undoubtedly been some of the very best of my travels so far. Long Beach was social heaven for the backpacker...I met so many people during my time there through the daily anyone join in volleyball games at 5pm, group meals afterwards, drinking and dancing until 3am at Palm Tree bar and general friendliness of the location. I also bumped into two friends from my travels in New Zealand, Mark and Lee, whilst walking down the beach on my ... read more

Started my PADI Open Water Course on Sunday! Our group was Gemma, Katie H, Natalie and me and we were going to be instructed by Jon. He taught us how to set up our equipment - the jacket (Buoyancy Control Device or BCD), weights, regulators or air sources, tank, mask and so on. My new nickname is Wide Face because I got the bigger mask to fit my chubby cheeks in!!! We then went into fairly shallow water to do a few basic skills. We learnt how to clear our mask (filling up our masks with water then lifting your head up while breathing out through your nose to clear the water out), recovering your regulator if it comes out (you have to keep exhaling under water even without the regulator in), and sharing your air ... read more

We got the night bus at 9:00pm from Penang and arrived at Kota Baharu at 5:00am where we had to wait 2 hours to get a boat across to the Islands. The Perhentian islands consist of two islands Besar (meaning big island) and Kecil (meaning small island). We headed by speed boat to the big island, which took half an hour compared to getting a slow boat which takes an hour and a half. We really enjoyed this, even though we hadn't managed to get much sleep due to some very annoying people on our bus! As we pulled up to the beach the sea was absolutely stunning, it was a beautiful turquoise colour and it was so clear you could see the bottom, it definitely looked like paradise (thanks Louise for recommending it!) We were ... read more
