ko lanta was pretty nice, though it's officially sealed our 'no-more-thai-islands' deal. we're over it. i'v never been the lie on a beach type and i don't think that'll ever change. we spent 2 days here just pottering around and chilling and playing with the baby lobster thingys on the beach. when we decided to race them we new it was time to leave the island...boredom had soared to new heights. lonely planet on trang; 'we love the vintage tuk-tuks and the lolly coloured vespas.....blabla.....cultural mecca....blabla.....night market....blabla....feast for the senses....blabla'.....NO! what a hole. truley this is by far the worst destination i have ever had the pleasure of visiting in all my travels. filthy, stinkin', creepy, dark hole. it looks like the set of a horror movie, and not a single thing to see or ... read more

Yes, it is time to leave Malaysia. We actually spent longer here than planned, and i think we've pretty much done it to death! In kuala terrangganu today. and we leave for thailnad tonight. Shite last day though... its pissing down out there (hence the internetting), my back keeps siezeing up, i broke a bracelet and lost a stone from my ring. The post office is closed. Nightmare eh? How do i cope through these rought times you may ask? By looking forward to getting trasted in thailand, and by remembering how pretty the beach we just left was. Pre-beach we had to stop offin Kota bharu, did i mention that last time? anyway, it was brillaint! We found the biggest, best and cheapest night food market thus far, and gorged ourselves on mysterious looking ... read more

The magnetic powers of Perhentian Kecil draw me back once again, a brief holiday is extended into a two month stay. A life of sand, sea, sun and scuba. I confess - I do not know why I am here again - I do enjoy it here. I'm "working" part-time as a divemaster, part-time as web geek. But - I've been here, I've done here, I've worn the T-shirt till it's faded down to a vague suggestion of it's original colour. Time spent underwater is the best time, my passion for underwater photography grows. Ambitions fulfilled: Sea horses; a sandy drift dive over stubby sea grass and we find a few each dive. Hitting 300 logged dives any day soon, most as a divemaster. That's more or less it; really nice photos and many new friends, ... read more

Walking into the bathrooms at the Lemongrass Chalets is never something to be cherished at the best of times. 'Bathroom' is a term that conjures up images of a room and, if not a bath, then some bathing facilities. The word should therefore be used loosely in this instance - although not horrific I can imagine many people refusing to use them. Anyway, that is besides the point. The incident that I want to reconstruct on this page is the near collision I had with another living being one afternoon as I rounded the corner to the bathroom shack. Coming the other way was a six foot monitor lizard, presumably just having used the loo (possibly the shower but I think this is unlikely). It gave me one of the larger shocks of my life ... read more

20 June - 8 July We set out at 5AM to catch our ferry to the Perhentian Islands, for more scuba and beachy lazy afternoons. Our guesthouse friends Tom from the UK and Peter from Germany split a cab with us and we soon found ourselves aboard the "fast ferry" to the islands. Now I had heard a few horror stories about the fast ferries, but figured, hey, at least we'll get there quickly. However, time slows down considerably when you're terrified, so I'm not sure in the end that this was the best bet. The "captain" was an 18-ish yr old Malay who seemed blissfully unaware that we were all white-knuckled and saying Hail Maries, Our Fathers or whatever prayers popped into our heads as we crashed over the huge waves. It was kind of ... read more

*June 19-20 - Kota Bharu *June 21 - 26 - Perhentians We took one of the scariest flights imaginable from KL to Kota Bharu - I've never experienced such terrifying turbulence which lasted for what seemed to be an eternity. Thoughts crossed my mind like - does a budget airline like Air Asia have the same standards for safety - are they used to flying in such awful weather - our hearts were racing and we were so thankful to touch down in Kota Bharu. We split a taxi with a Chinese guy from KL and found a budget guest house where we just chilled out for a little bit. We met some other travelers - Peter from Munich, a friendly guy, but he took the winey German stereotype to a whole new level, and ... read more

Well well well. Its been a while since I have written and I trust this email finds you all well. So as you can see by the title of this email I have been on the Perhentian Islands for the last 2 weeks. I only really went there for 3 days or so but it was nice and i met some cool people so I decided to stay a bit longer. The Perhentian Islands are 2 tropical islands just off the North East coast of Malaysia. Taking around 45 mins by boat to get there. Comprised of 2 islands Pulau Besar and Pulau Kecil they are apparently Malaysia's 'showpiece islands'. Both islands are similar with white sandy beaches, turqoise-blue water and jungle fringed interiors. Completely undeveloped with no cars or high rise hotels. The only complaint ... read more

Hello!! Well its been a while but that's because we spent longer than expected in paradise! but paradise came with a small price, a very very bad and expensive internet connection. So here's what we've been up to since we left Melbourne and headed to Singapore: After a nice flight with Air Singapore we arrived in the Little India district of Singapore where we stayed for three nights. Our time there was spent looking round the big city/small country, eating nice food and getting bitten by bed bugs at the hostel! Yeah poor Verity got pretty badly munched on but it's ok, the bites have all cleared up now. One of the highlights of Singapore was going for the obligatory Singapore Sling in the "Long Bar" at the "Raffles hotel". The Drink itself was overpriced ... read more

You wouldn’t believe what adventures we’ve been having! Just thinking about it all makes us both topple over with giddiness. We’ve seen so many wonderful things and learnt so much that we are now much, much better people than anyone else, fact. Actually, that’s not all true. For a start we spent some of our time in Singapore which is one of the tamest cities in the entire world. Although it’s cleanliness was a welcome change from the madness of India, Singapore is just like the city of London (the really dull bit where Canary Wharf is), but with an absurd number of shopping malls. You may remember that we are brave adventurers who laugh at danger, so a city where chewing gum is illegal is bland bland bland bland bland. Except for its cable cars. ... read more

It was pouring with rain and the sea was very rough when we got the boat from the strange little village of Kuala Besut. The boat was flying over the huge waves and belly-flopping back down with such force I honestly thought it might split or capsize! I was just worried about my backpack, and had visions of it sinking to the depths with all my possesions. I seriously considered putting a life-jacket on my backpack, it was that bad! Despite the crazy weather, we could tell it was gorgeous - the sea was still such an amazing bright turquoise it looked unnatural. We stayed in a little hut at the furthest end of the beach, a collection of huts called 'Lemon Grass Chalets' or something. To be fair it was literally just a shed ... read more
