The journey to Perhentian was every bit as long and difficult as we had been expecting. We left Langkawi on a ferry at 5:30pm and didn’t arrive at Perhentian until 8:15 the next morning. The bus journey took us along the Thai border passing through Alor Star as well as several other out of the way towns. The driver seemed to like to stop every hour or so and turn on all of the lights, just to ensure that we were unable to get any sleep. When we arrived at the bus station in Jerteh, we were dropped by the side of the road at a petrol station. The driver insisted that it was the bus station and let us unload our luggage. However he was trying to get us to pay his mates (waiting at ... read more

Thailand had given us a lot of things, but it hadn't given us the crystal clear water, fine white sand and kick arse marine life that's needed after three months of living out of a backpack. For that, we headed south of the border to Malaysia's beautiful Perhentian Islands. It's hard to believe that two such stunning, relatively undeveloped islands can lie only 30 minutes boat ride from the Malaysian mainland and not halfway between Tahiti and Tonga, but thankfully it's true. And even though I had been here five years earlier, it was nice to see the amazing water clarity and rustic jungle feel (nothing over two storeys high, generators everywhere) still very apparent. All Kako had to say was sugoi, sugoi, sugoi! (Japanese for this rocks, this is dope, this is damn sweet!) Being ... read more

This is back dated but I think we all agree worth writing coz this was our fav place overall. I have had enough with out dated computers on beautiful islands... this is taking forever! Well we ended up on Perhentian Besar (big island) but the place we wanted to stay at was full so we went to another bay and stayed at a place called FLORA BAY. Our hut was basic but v cute with 2 kingsize beds and ac... food was good and hammocks were plentiful. Saw nemos for the first time snorkelling just in the bay. Eventually moved to COCOHUTS which jay had chosen before we left DXB and that was a real success, I met a teacher from Canada so had someone to chat to whilst the kids went DIVING. It was ... read more

The journey from Cameron Highlands to Kuala Besut Jetty was an 8 hour journey in a minivan that holds 10 people. There were 10 of us plus 9 big backpacks! A bit of tight sqeeze. The start of the journey was not so bad, as i said before its really cool up in the highlands but after an hour so you caould feel the temperature creeping up as we got lower and lower. Luckliy for us, three of the girls were not going the whole way and that got us a bit of extra leg room but we were all happy to get out of there and on to the boat. The boat was a Fast Boat - thats what it said on the front - and we had to choose which of the beaches ... read more

Hey there, and thank you so much for all my birthday messages, internet is super expensive here (as is everything) so I prepared this blog from the comfort of my room and will email you all back as soon as we get to the mainland, or in fact to Indonesia, where we'll be next week... I am sitting on the balcony of a wooden chalet up in the trees, surrounded by large geckos, above a pristine white beach as the sun sets. I just saw a yacht sail by not too far away, and in the distance are the few hilly islands surrounding this one. We have the French windows open and bob is studying for his dive exam tomorrow so that after then, we can dive together freely and look at all the little fishes. ... read more

Well we have left another country, and made our way into another. This time we have crossed the border into Malaysia and to be honest i am glad of it ! Its not that i didnt like southern Thailand, but i just got sick of it and i was happy to move on. REWIND ! anyway so when i last spoke we were in Krabi ...... well to be honest there was not much at all to do there, except watch some dvd's as we were staying in the town which was well away from the beach, but either way we were sick of the beach at this stage, and even getting in the water seemed like we were just going through the motions. I guess we kinda lost a little steam, which i suppose ... read more

Hello there! Well since the last time i wrote, we have been busy bee's............................. Ste passed his Padi diving course with flying colours, it was so much harder than we both thought it would be. He had to take a 50 question exam and do all kinds of skills in the water like take his mask off and clear it off the water then put it back on again! Something that i certainly could not have done!! So now Mr Conner is able to dive as a qualified diver not just a fun diver.....very posh hey! I am very proud of him! Although Ste did not see any turtles whilst diving we took a snorkeling trip around the island and got to see them! I was taught to snorkel by a very patient teacher bless ... read more

Not what you expect to see outside your hutThe Perhentian Islands, off the West coast of Malaysia are famous for lizards. Big bloody monitor lizards. Some get to 5ft long. One afternoon there was a 3ft lizard sat on the sand just outside our beach hut. They are harmless, but a few things go through your mind when you see one, and if you are unlucky some things seep out of the other end aswell. Ok I'm overexagerating a tad, but you get the picture. It was pretty smart to see such wildlife close at hand. What else to say about Malaysia so far. Well, we pretty much came straight to the Perhentian Islands straight from Krabi, about an 8 hour bus ride, followed by half an hour on the speedboat. The Islands themselves are pretty ... read more

Hi there, first of all i would like to apologise for my awful spelling on the last blog i read over it and it was terrible...sorry! We caught a ferry back to Krabi then got on a mini bus from there......It took us about 3hrs to a town called Hat Yai where we were dropped off at a local bus station! we were the only tourists there it was great and a huge change after Phi Phi. We got onto our transport that took us and half a dozen Thai people to the border. the journey took us down the east side of Thailand where all the trouble is at the moment........we felt very safe but is was very clear that something was going on there, lots of police check points where the other passengers ... read more

On the 28th June we finally left Thailand and headed into Malaysia on an 8 hour bus ride. Our first destination was the Perhentian Islands, which are two islands, the large and the small. The larger one has slightly nicer accommodation and is therefore slightly more expensive - needless to say we stayed on the smaller island! The island is quite stunning. As we got off the boat the sea was so clear it was unbelieveable, you could see right to the bottom and the sand was so white and fine. One of the main reasons for going there was for the scuba diving. However, thought I'd better avoid it this time as I didn't want my dog bite being chomped on by the Wrasse fish - the little buggers. So I just chilled out ... read more
