On Sat we had an introduction to our volunteer duties which was interesting. The dive resort manager, Peisee, a friendly Malaysian turtle enthusiast, told us all about how the turtles lay their eggs. It takes the mum 3 hours to get to shore and lay her eggs after digging her hole and covering it over again, plus digging a pretend hole to fool any predators (such as the big monitor lizards that we've seen sauntering around the island!). If the hole is in the open air then all the hatchlings will be female; if the hole is under cover of a tree then all the hatchlings will be male - strange eh?! The babies take about 3 months to hatch and the strongest climb over the weakest to the top. Then the top one literally puts ... read more

Up no-so-bright and early on Thursday after a jetlagged, sleepless night at the Number 8 Guesthouse for our journey to Turtle Island. Good job my roomie Julie got up at the right time because my alarm didn't work for some reason! (Don't worry it works now!) Got the taxi to KL airport, where we had Burger King for breakfast (chicken royale, yum) and got on the plane for the hour-long journey to the north of Malaysia- only to get off the plane again as there had been a technical malfunction! Good job really because one of the girls, Katie, had overslept and had to meet us at the airport... After an hour wait (and a plane change) we flew to Kota Bharu. Had a hot bumpy ride to the east coast - Kuala Besut, where we ... read more

National Day fell on Friday, so I took leave for three days until Sunday so I drove my family all the way from Johor to Kenyir Lake in Terengganu, abut 400 km away. I booked my lodging at Kenyir Sanctuary Resort few months ahead through internet, costing RM120 per night, staying in a chalet. After reaching Kuantan I took the interior road passing Kuala Berang and arrived at the Gawi jetty by the lake side. There were a few jetties and difficult to find the correct one and poor signage did not help. So the old and trusted way of asking direction from the locals did help to locate the boat counter and got the correct jetty. The Sanctuary Resort location was on an island about 5 minutes boat ride distance. The chalet has attached bathroom, ... read more

My good friend Jack, who I'm sure anyone reading this knows, and for that reason, why he needs no introduction, was scheduled to arrive into Thailand on the 18th. With the 15 days he had in Thailand we planned to do the whole Ko Pha Ngan, Full Moon and Ko Toa experience togther along with Katie his girlfriend and three of her friends who we'd be meeting later. However, Jack fancied doing some of the West Coast, Krabie, Rialay beach etc etc, which I had just done. This meant I had about a week spare while he did that before meeting up....... so what better thing to do with a spare week in the south of Thialnd than..........go to Malaysia! The Perhentian Islands had been mentioned to me a few times by various people since I'd ... read more

Time to move on. We caught our flight from Siem Reap to Kuala Lumpur but were gutted to realize we had landed in the ‘ Lo Cost Terminal as we’d flown with Air Asia. Our onward journey was four and a half hours away and there was nothing to do. In the international terminal we’d remembered seeing free internet access and had planned to use the time productively and update our travel blog. The only decent seats were in the café, how long can you make two cups of coffee last? After what seemed like forever we boarded our flight and 35 mins later we touched at Kota Bahru. By now it was approaching ten o clock so we were worried about getting a bed for the night. We jumped in a taxi and asked to ... read more

So off to the islands today, the Perhentian Islands to be specific and Perhentian Kecil in particular. Thankfully Vicky thought to book accomodation ahead in the morning or we would have been stuck, we got the last room available at that resort (I call it a resort but it certainly isn't what it sounds like!!!) We shared a taxi with a girl from England who had been to the islands before so we managed to pick her brains for a few things to do whilst there and also got some unwelcome news on our next border crossing (more on that later). After the taxi, we took a speed boat to the island and speed really was of the essence, the driver really wasnt into the comfort factor for passengers, it felt like being in a washing ... read more

The Perhentians symbolized the beginning of the end of our year long trip. It would be our last island get away; our last chance to dive in warm, tropical water; our last chance to get a tan; our last meal of authentic curry; and our last chance to blow the budget. But most important, it was our last overnight bus ride and it was perfect. "Perfect" and "bus ride" don't typically occur in the same sentence. With sore knees, aching backs and kinks in the neck and a good nights sleep on swaying, bumpy bus is hard to come by. But this overnight ride was made special by the Malay man chatting up Jarrod. Friends on the Bus He's sitting across the isle from Jarrod and in his early 30s, balding slightly and a little belly ... read more

I wanted to thank whoever's recovered most of my blog entries for me - I really appreciate it. Thanks to Gemma too for the kind offer about the emails, but they're mostly all retrieved now. I wrote the below entry onto Hotmail when Travelblog was first down, to paste it on asap. Has been longer than anticipated though! 31/7/07 - 3/8/07 We woke and had breakfast at the hostel, packed our bags and then checked out. We went to the nice old ladies we'd left our washing with - and it had all been cleaned to perfection, ironed and folded. They seemed shocked when we tipped them (no idea why, it all only came to about 3GBP anyway) The taxi came at 12pm to take us to Kuala Besut - where you have to catch the ... read more

Whatever you do, don't go to the Watercolours Impiani Resort on the small Perhentian Island. It’s terrible. You’ll do the place a favour if you keep away. It’ll give them some much needed time to teach the staff some service skills as well as giving them some time to maintain and update the shabby and dank accommodation and communial facilities. And the food, well the food is just amazing, if you like your food with ants. Just read the reviews on trip advisor this place is terrible we only booked it because we were desperate. Believe me you’ll be tearing your hair out trying to get away from the place. Guess where we spent the first couple of days? #@!%#! After which we transferred to the Patani Beach at the other end of the beach. An ... read more

Ostettiin paikalliselta torilta kolmella eurolla aito Disada-laukku, johon saataisiin laitettua kaikki sellaiset kamat mitä ei enää tarvittaisi reissatessa, kuten lämpimät vaatteet. Täytettiin Disada-laukku täyteen ”turhilla” kamoilla ja päästyämme juna-asemalle laukun kantohihna sitten pettikin kummastakin päästä, joten ei onneksi oltu maksettu laukusta liikaa ;) Juna-asemalla venaillessa katsottiin kuinka junat Thaimaassa oliva... read more
