Crossing the border from Thailand was like a breath of fresh air. There was a chap there whose job was just to welcome us to Malaysia! How nice is that? Everyone seemed really friendly and helpful. We headed to Kuala Terrenganu as a good stopping off place to get to Redang but we didn't get to see much there as I got sick for a few days. No better cure than to chill on a beach and what a beach we found in Redang! It was stunning. Sand like icing sugar and warm crystal clear water filled with tropical fish. The snorkelling, even off the beach which had several hotels along it, was fantastic. It was so good we even got up early to go swimming! The hotel organised snorkelling trips to various sites around the ... read more

It's almost always worth it, but let's face it......travel can be a real bitch. Back in the little port of Mersing, we were eating Pattaya rice at a small restaurant, waiting for our 10 hour bus ride to begin. It was 11pm and the bus was already one hour late, but as the restaurant owner mused, "that usually happens". Already the travel day had been off to a rocky start. Our 1 hour ferry back from Tioman turned into a 5 hour ordeal, as we stopped to pick up only the extremely disorganized tourists from every pier in the South China Sea. Some people held the ferry in limbo while their wives were still franticaly packing back in the rooms. The ferry eventually became so crowded that it tipped from side to side at extreme angles ... read more

The great country of U.S and A! ... read more

Well hello my avid fans! (all one of you-Mum!?) Since I last updated, I have been to Malaysia and out again, consisting of a little two week blast. Starting in Kuala Lumpur, a place I have always wanted to go only to say the name. It's very modern and technologically advanced but in rather a slap-dash kind of way. There's such a mixture of new and old, clean and well...dirty/scummy, but somehoe it all collaborates together to be an urban jungle that we became very familiar with. We had to as we became a bit stuck there, as I had a peronal challenge of not being able to get any money out. Apparently my bank likes to do surprise security checks which I must say is very noble of them, but a slight warning would have ... read more

Hey Guys, Wow.... This place is absolutly amazing, and has far exceeded any expectations that we had. The beach is as near perfect as you can imagine: white powdery sand, torquise water, palm trees and hardly another tourist to be seen (thanks for the tip Paul!). We stayed at Paradise Resort, which was right on the beach, and there was a very good dive centre next door where we hired our snorkling gear. The snorkling was absolutly incredible. After checking in, we headed straight down to the beach for a snorkle in the next bay along. We saw so many beautiful fish, every colour you can imagine and were fortunate enough to run into a Hawksbill turtle feeding on the coral. The carapace (shell) was getting on for a metre long and the markings on it's ... read more

It took us a flight from KL to Kota Bharu, then a taxi to Kuala Besut, then a very dodgy ozone destroying boat then a taxi boat to finally reach Pulau Perhentian Kecil. Then when we arrived we realised we were on coral beach and not long beach.... no problem, just a 20min trek through the jungle carrying our ridiculously heavy rucksacks to the other side of the island. All this in 35C heat. But then we shouldnt complain... it was the most beautiful place we ve been yet.. Lets just say edel was pleased to get through the jungle alive and see the sea again! The beach was very quiet with white sand stretching from one end to the other and various very very cheap restaurants and bars scattered along the way. Its not ... read more

Well after the sights of Railay we set off on a boat and bus combo! unfortunately we had to get up at 5 or something like that and i wasnt feeling too fresh when i got up, anyway we made it to the meeting point with no one in sight . Eventually after a hour or so the woman we booked it with arrived saying because the tide was in we couldnt move the boat as it was stranded on the sand??????hmm surely they would know what time the tides come in and out and so plan to have the boat further out???? oh well after another age of waiting she finally arranged someone to meet pick us up and then we set off to get the bus. We caught the bus no problem, well when ... read more

Kat writes: So up nice and early we catch a bus in Singapore at 6.30am (my dad would be proud!) to take us back into Malaysia. The border crossing this time was very different. Unlike Singapore's huge modern border control, the Malaysia one was a little string of what looked like a row of down trodden shops. I thought I had taken a trip down Shirley High Street in Southampton by accident! Surprising actually as Malaysia is a relatively prosperous country compared to some of its neighbours. People are less interested in giving us the hard sell and many can speak at least some English, getting chatting to the locals is easy. They really are a friendly bunch. Back in Malaysia we start travel up the east coast. It is much less built up than the ... read more

After travelling through 3 countries in 1 month we wanted to take some time off to relax a bit.. We had seen so many advertisements for all kinds of ' bounty islands' that were determined to go to our very own bounty island.. So there we went, off to the perhentian islands.. Well, it was everything we hoped for! The start was a bit stressful, we had taken the night bus from KL to Kuala Besut, and as most people who know me know, I can't sleep that well in buses.. So I was very tired and sleepy when we arrived in Kuala Besut at 5 am, where it was completely dark and we didn't have a clue where to go to. We kind of got dragged out of the bus by a guy from some ... read more

8hr bus Journey, 1 hr squashed taxi ride and a 1/2hr bumpby fast boat ride and we arrive at the Perentian Islands the place I have been dreaming of since we started planning this trip. So we get to Butterworth Bus station on the mainland after a quick ferry from Penang Island with plenty of time to kill as we want this trip to go ahead without too many trauma's like we've had in the past, especially with next bus being at 8.30 the next morning. MMM being early is one thing but being three hrs early is taking it to the extreme, not to worry we'll be able to grab a juice and read our books with this being a major bus station and all. Nope. Turns out Butterworth bus station is nothing but 12 ... read more
