the night after i watched the spurs bolton game in the jungle (i couldnt believe it either) we set off at 8.30am for the Perhentian island of kecil which means small the other besar means large and also reffers to the size of the pockets you need to go there! so 2 coaches and a speed boat later...... ol and a small boat to take us to the shore from the big boat as there is no port and definately no airport we had to take off our shoes and carry our luggage through the water about 10 meters to the shore (that how remote this island is). we trekked down the beach in the heat sweating like crazy deciding on which ramshakle place to stay. they are all basically wooden huts and i decided to ... read more

After a good nights sleep at Anands family home, we were up and showered and ready to leave at 6am as planned. We quietly called Ananad who stumbled out of his room, fag in mouth, looking distinctly like he just woke up although he claimed to have been awake for ages (yeah, right). We finally left the house at around 6.20 which was going to mean we would be lucky to make the 7am ferry as planned. We also had to do a pit stop at 7-11 to pick up batteries, iced nescafe to wake us up and 200 Dunhills for Anand to get him through the 4 day weekend! We then headed for Kuala Besut in Anands big, and as we found out extremely fast, 4wd. There was not much traffic on the road and ... read more

Our reason for the blog title goes back to our audio-guide of KL Tower in Kuala Lumpur. The lady speaking had a nice British accent, but every time she said the country she said it like "Ma-LAY-thee-a". At this time we were still travelling with John, and we all had a laugh over the pronunciation. It became a running joke between the three of us! Peninsular Malaysia feels like a different country than Malaysian Borneo. We really enjoyed our time in both parts of the country. As with most of our Asian cuisine experiences, Malaysia did not disappoint. We noticed that Malaysian food seemed to be a blend of lots of different ethnic influences. The last 2 days have been a stormy mess. It makes things difficult when you are living in a hut on an island (think, waking up at 7am, having to pee but the only way to do so is run through the terrential downpour), but it has been a fun few days anyways. We have been running around in the rain, swimming through a storm, watching movies and just hanging out. Swimming was a serius adventure. I finally understand the feeling of being pulled out to shore and being unable to get back. Luckily I had 'pinky', the illegitimate raft born of a 'bluey' that was left in malaysia due to passport regulations. making up stories gets very important when you are stranded on a stormy island. Today I was planning on leaving on the last ... read more

I am now being a beach bum on an island with the clearest, most beautiful water I have ever seen in my entire life. But back track a few days and I was sleeping in a cave. with bats.... We got up to set out on our 3 day journey into the oldest rainforest in the world-Tamen Nagara. We was me, the 2 Canadian guys I had met on the bus, one Canadian girl and a Danish guy. We were to be guided by an insane jungle man named "mon". Set with my jungle hat and their Bob Marley gear, we got to the bench where we were told to meet Mon. While waiting for him to wake up, another crazy jungle man decides to lecture us on cave ettiquette. He just kept repeatedly telling us ... read more

I decided to go to Perhentian Island for some sun and sand. This island is found on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the South China Sea. Ahh-so beautiful! It took 2 plane-rides, 1 hour of taxi and 45 minutes of boat to get to this island. I am happy to say that this is where I completed my 100th dive! Apparently, tradition among divers is to celebrate this all important milestone by diving naked! But I am prude- what can I say and so decided not to follow through with this tradition ;) The dive crew were very gracious about my decision and instead, they invited to my very first full-moon party! I was so lucky to have accidently fallen on this annual event! No, I did not get lost from my group because ... read more

Date visited: 3rd-10/11th April The Island of Besar: 'Big Island' We boarded our express sleeper train at 1800 hrs from Singapore and got to our lower berth economy :( sleeping area where we would spend the next 14 hours. We hoped this decision would ease stress at the Malaysian/Singapore border, as going by bus would have meant getting off about 3 times with backpacks and queing long hours. Although we had to disembark once, it was much quicker than taking the bus. The evening for me passed quickly as I was racing through my captivating trilogy. By the time darkness fell I bedded down only to be disturbed by about 5 kids racing up and down the corridor screaming with excitement. Much to my utter dismay and disgust at the mother's lack of discipline this behaviour ... read more

From Koh Lanta we made Trang by minibus employing ferry two times in three hours. Having lunch there we transferred to another minibus and travelled another three hours for Hat Yai. Instead of 3 o’clock they put us to another minibus at 5 pm to Penang. At around 7 pm we were at the border under heavy rain. Almost no formalities at the border. We reached Penang at 10 pm in George Town. George Town is old part of Penang Island where one can feel the British colonial. Malaysia has developed a lot. It is like a western country with her highways, cars, buses. But the religion effect is dominant. In George Town we stayed at Mingood Hotel a little bit expensive ( 80 RM including breakfast and Wi-fi at room) but all the facilities provided. ... read more

Hello everyone! We have made it safely to Indonesia! Just a quick up date for you all about Malaysia........ Flew into KL and headed straight for the jungle, Taman Negara where we did a night jungle walk and saw vipers, stick insects and MASSIVE spiders! We also did a rapid shooting which was basically a boat ride where we went through rapids and got soaked! We also visited a settlement where they use blow pipes to kill animals...we both had a go but i hit the penguin slap bang in the middle of the stomach! We also went along a canopy walkway high in the rainforest ...soooooo high ...40m! After this we headed to the Perenthian islands for some surf, snorkelling and diving! We met 3 lovely english ladiees in the jungle who were also going ... read more

Paul and I had already visited many beautiful beaches and islands. However the moment the boat arrived at the Perhentian islands, it was clear they would trump all those we had visited previously, and also set a benchmark so high I doubt anywhere else we are visiting (or even places we are not!) could beat. The journey from Penang was relatively painless, although we did need to spend a night in th town of Kuala Besut - the main port to the Perhentian islands. The population on the east coast of Malaysia was notably more Islamic than anywhere we had been so far, but that didn't (nor that it should) seem to affect the friendliness of the people. Short on cash andwith no ATM in Kuala Besut we would've been stuck had it not been for ... read more
