It's not terribly difficult being a vegetarian in Malaysia. There is a large enough Hindu population that you can always find an Indian restaurant serving vegetarian food, and plenty of 'Western' food anyway (I ended up eating more pasta in Malaysia than I probably will in Italy). At first I was worried that it would be different on the Perhentian Islands, which I had heard were small and sleepy. I wondered if I would end up living off the remaining mandarin placed in my hand by a kind old Indian woman who we chatted to while waiting for a bus. I considered stocking up on a supply of cup noodles but in the end only had room for the important things - a bottle of red wine, a small bottle of gin and a small bottle ... read more

Arrived in Kuala Besut from Taman Negara and took the fast boat to the islands. The Perhentian islands are made up of two islands, Besar (the larger) and Kecil (the smaller). Most backpackers stay on the smaller island as the larger island is more resort oriented. I stayed in Long Beach on the samller island. The locals are so friendly, and it’s a pretty quiet place. I arrived and of course, got sunburned my first day. My legs and feet are so burned, its incredible. My feet are so swollen, I look like Im pregnant! When I was in Taman Negara, we sprayed some really potent bug spray on our shoes and socks because leeches are a problem. Well, within a half hour or so, my skin was tingling. Later, after I showered, I noticed my ... read more

From the Perhentian Islands we took a boat back to the mainland and from there we took a a very packed public bus to Kuala Terengganu. We didn't have much planned for our time there but I hoped that we would get to visit Kenyir lake- the largest man made lake in Asia. We checked into a mediocre hostel and enjoyed our first McDonald's in a long time! Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country and this was more evident in Kuala Terengganu (and the journey there) than it had been on the islands. Pork was off the menus and the women were dressed traditionally and covered their heads. We followed suit as much as the heat would permit us to! The town itself is actually very large and turned out to have a lot to do ... read more

Perhinthians , Malaysia - Wow, amazing, etc etc 19th March - 22nd March I cant remember anything out of the ordinary on route to The jetty for the perhinthians from Taman Negara. I'm just so glad to be so close to 3 days relaxing on some lovely tropical island and beach in the sun after all the hard work and walking and leeches in the jungle. like the rest of the people i feel, I was itching to get on the boat and make our way to the island, unfortunately there were a few girls who had a few problems with there tickets. They were aguing that they had paid for the boat journey to the island and yet it was obvious they hadn't...still they moaned and argued pointlessly and all they managed to do was ... read more

Having decided to depart Thailand a day later than our visa technically allowed us to, we expected some hassle at the border. That didn't turn out to be an issue but the journey itself wasn't the best. We took a boat from Koh Phi Phi to the mainland and then caught a bus from Krabi to a town called Sungai Kolok on the Thai/Malay border. From there we walked into Malaysia (stopping briefly to pay our fine and get stamped in of course!) and took a taxi to the small town of Kuala Besut. The taxi turned out to take 90 minutes and the journey itself was a further and unexpected 110kms! We eventually reached our destination a lot later than planned and booked another boat to the Perhentian islands, leaving the following morning. After a ... read more

010 - Malaysia - Perhentian Islands 03/13/08 - 03/19/08 The Perhentian Islands are on the northeast coast of Malaysia and are, quite possibly, paradise. But first, the trip from Ko Phayam (Thailand) to Kota Bharu (Malaysia) to give you an idea of what budget travel is like... The night before we left Ko Phayam we decided to rent a motor bike so that we could transport our stuff from Ao Yai to the pier (where the boat was leaving). Upon asking around, we rented the cheapest motor bike we could find for only 130 B for 24 hours ($4). Lesson learned: don't rent the absolute cheapest bike you can find! This bike was on its last leg... we managed to get it started and make it back to Ao Yai, but the next day with our ... read more

The Perhentian Islands are supposed to be one of the most beautiful group of islands in Asia, totally deserted and no electricity, you cant even buy alcohol! We were quite dissapointed as we would be in the area at the end of February which is still in Malaysia's monsoon season and no boats run to the island. However, when we reached the Malaysian border town of Kota Bharu the guy at our hostel said they'd been having very strange weather, and the Monsoon had finished a few weeks ago and the weather had been excellent. We only had a week until we flew to Oz from KL but we managed to fit in another 2 days relexing on a beautiful island! The speedboat trip was probably the scariest boat ride i've ever been on, actually lauching ... read more

We caught a night bus to Kuala Terengganu leaving 9pm arriving 5:30am. Arggh! Probably wont do that again. All those of you who think my drving is poor: You aint seen nothin yet! These guys are shocking and I saw in the news that another bus from the same company crashed on a similar route yesterday killing two. We taxied to Kenyir lake, bordering on Taman Negara Nat. park, which we hope to see more of later. A short boat ride takes you to tree lined islands and wierd creatures that seem a world away from civilisation. The taxi driver is hilarious and even insisted I drive some of the way. He asked if we might let him drive us tomorrow also. Sure enough he was waiting at our Guest house in the morning and drove ... read more

27/09/07 With the roads in North Western Malaysia being UK standard, or dare I say it, better than UK standard, and the usual maniac behind the wheel, we reached the outskirts of Penang in no time. We drove onto the island via the huge, and originally named, Penang Bridge, and arrived in Georgetown (named after Britain's King George III, an early hint towards the British colonial influence), which is a major, bustling commercial centre. The city itself reeks of cash, although not OTT Hong Kong/Singapore bucks, but compared to Thailand, this place has it all, including pavements!!!!! The minibus dropped us at Banana Guest House, which, after a quick look around, looked fine. We were debating air-con or fan, but Chloe and Amy wanted AC, so AC it was...... After a quick shower, and Amy replenishing ... read more

Ahhh, Malaysia, like an old friend, one that smells a little but you like too much to really care. Slipping back into the country the way I came out back in 2004, via Kota Baru, I was confident, I was on familiar ground, I chatted to locals as a lone westerner on the awesome sleeper train, drank coffee in the dining cart like it was the 1920's, watched the jungle creep up as we neared the border. At the start of my solo journey (Nilam had also gone to Malaysia, but wanted to see different parts of it, parts I'd already seen) I stepped off the connecting bus from the border into Kota Baru main square like a pro...then promptly got lost. I ended up in the same place I'd stayed in before, after some local ... read more
