By Chris: Left the balmy 30 degree conditions of the beautiful Boracay Island to set forth for Seoul, South Korea, however a delightful 7 hour stopover awaited us at Bangkok Airport, i think Ive seen just about enough of that particular Building !!!! However my mood was tempered somewhat by the fact that i got an upgrade to business class !!!! Happy Days, a better seat meant slept virtually the whole way, far nicer than cattle class, Im not sure If Ill be able to go back !!! So w arrived in Seoul and got directed by Mandy, an american english teacher to an area called sinchon, when we got here the snow began to fall and we couldnt see any hotels at all, however luckily a guy who spoke English took pity on me in ... read more

by Chris: Took the bus to Siam Reap, only to discover that the only beds haydn and I (Plus our new German friend, V) could find were $4 a night dorm beds, although for the second night we all got in to more luxury accomodation. Got up at 4AM yes thats right 4AM, a time which im not too familar with, to go see sunrise at Angkor Wat temple, the place was absoloutely beautiful and despite the fact it was teeming with tourists there are still places in the temples where you would feel alone and isolated and from an architecture/landscape architecture point of view the whole area was absoloutly breathtaking, words can't really do it justice, well not mine anyway, so please look at the pics and even then you really have to go there ... read more

Our Bus arrived in Phnom Penh nearly two hours late, and hungover from the Chinese New Year party the night before, I was feeling pretty ragged. The people speak good english here and despite a local currency, most outlets quote prices in UD$. We had an awesome luxury roomwith balcony in a casino hotel above a busy city centre intersection for about $NZ25.... read more

February 6th 2008

February 6 was the Chinese new year's eve, and Ho Chi Minh was alive! It was awesome to have two new years parties in six weeks (yours was still better Logan). Everybody was smiling and laughing walking the streets and there was a huge public fireworks display after midnight too. Everybody must have been partying as the next morning the streets were all but dead, the first time seen here. What I found quite interesting was even with quiet streets, drivers and riders were still using their driving around tooting their car/bike horns like mad, confirming what I already suspected here: Vietnamese use their horns cause they like to.... read more

A couple of guys took Chris and I on their scooters with all our gear out of Ho Chi Minh City to see some of the delta for three days. I woke the first morning to find a snake in our bath. Nobody can speak English in the My Tho, the town we stayed. Although the food here is great, I wouldn't recommend the tea. We took a couple of long boat rides up some canals and saw some really poor lifestyles on the way. By Chris: Yeah the scooter ide was, although a tad pricey by vietnamese standards, definatly a good way to see things, weaving in out of the hectic new years traffic was an experience in itself, went on a few boatrides and saw the areas around the delta, lots of nice little ... read more

Next stop Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. What a busy spot this is, the streets are teeming with shiny new scooters. We caught a bus to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a spot where you can see what it was like for the 500,000 locals that during the war hid in the tunnel network that weaves it's way under this country. We got to fire off a few rounds with an AK47 assault rifle. That was pretty cool. We also were shown to a factory where agent orange victims handcraft wooden art. This was pretty sad, but I suppose there's always going to be parts of a trip that make you feel uncomfortable. by chris: Yeah Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon as the locals still call it) isd a pretty hectic place, for those of ... read more

by chris: Yip the title sums up Taman neagara national park (nah just kidding its a lot more enjoyable than that !!!) i got attcked by a few of the wee blighters and they can really take there fair share of blood !!!!! But the park itself was beautiful with lush rain forest (emphasis on the rain !!!) sadly though its quite commercialised and not what a kiwi such as myself would consider a national park. The boat ride in and out and the canopy walk where you walk through the rain forest at heights of up to 10m above groundlevel were definate highlights.Although one slightly aggravating thing was that alot of the tracks werent marked very well and we assumed that was so youd need a paid guide (about 12nnzd pp) to go down them ... read more

We caught a night bus to Kuala Terengganu leaving 9pm arriving 5:30am. Arggh! Probably wont do that again. All those of you who think my drving is poor: You aint seen nothin yet! These guys are shocking and I saw in the news that another bus from the same company crashed on a similar route yesterday killing two. We taxied to Kenyir lake, bordering on Taman Negara Nat. park, which we hope to see more of later. A short boat ride takes you to tree lined islands and wierd creatures that seem a world away from civilisation. The taxi driver is hilarious and even insisted I drive some of the way. He asked if we might let him drive us tomorrow also. Sure enough he was waiting at our Guest house in the morning and drove ... read more

We caught a taxi to Melaka, south of KL, the first settlement of Malaysia. Stayed in a several hundred year old Chinese home here. Take in the sights while being peddled around in a rick shaw. Very old buildings from the three eras of Emperialist rule this city has endured (Portugese, Dutch and British) although has now enjoyed independence for 50 years. By Chris: Taxi ride in a merc to Melaka was all good (dont get too excited it was really old !!!!) Then went for a rickshaw ridfe with a real little guy who must have weighed about 54kgs max !!! but he told me not to worry as he had "much stamina" Melaka in the whole was pretty nice lots of good architecture, but if you were ona tight time frame then id give ... read more
