As soon as we got off the bus in Kuala Besut we were ambushed by people trying to sell us boat tickets to the Perhentian Islands. We weren't sure if they were trying to rip us off and charge us more than they should, so we walked towards the pier with a couple we met on the bus (Khalid - from Qatar and Mira - from Malaysia). Surprisingly, everyone did actually charge the same price, including the guys that ran at our bus when we arrived. We got onto the boat and arrived at the Big Island (Perhentian Besar) at about 10:30. We were in two minds as to which island we should choose, but we had heard the accommodation was a much better standard on the big island so we all ended up hopping of ... read more

Redang. July 4-9th. As cliche as it sounds, Redang was ripped off of one of those postcards. The ones that people send their friends when they want them to feel jealous: beaches with smooth white sand, palm trees hanging over the shore, and turquoise water filled with fish and coral reefs. Ironically, it was my dad who booked the trip. He's been going to a yoga class and his instructor was holding a yoga retreat on the island. There were yoga classes in the morning at 5:30, so that we could watch the sunrise while doing sun salutations. In the heat of the day we floated face down in the water or went scuba diving, staring at the fishes, wondering if we even have names for the colours we're seeing. In the evenings, the only thing ... read more

Surprisingly our Air Asia flight from KL was actually on time so we arrived in Kuala Terengganu at about 4pm. We intended on spending about 3 days in KT, however on the drive to our hotel we were already planning our escape. It was just a town, nothing particularly interesting to see or do. We ended up spending about 1.5 days there not doing a whole lot although we did go for a walk around the city to see the Sultan's Palace, a mosque, the foreshore etc. The Sultan's Palace wasn't particularly impressive. The building itself was alright, however he had no garden really...perhaps he should stop spending so much on the state and maybe splurge on himself...hmm. The Malaysian government is actually quite interesting. Most states have a sultan, and the sultans take turns (in ... read more

You know what I'm talking about, those adverts of a beautiful golden beach with the clearest aqua blue water when a top heavy girl walks along the beach eating the bounty. Well that is where I am but im just heavy full stop (must stop eating banana pancakes, must stop) but seriously this beach is amazing, the whole island is amazing - it will take a lot to beat it as im not sure it is really impossible to match it. We arrived into Long Beach and set about finding some accommodation, we were lucky to find somewhere right near the beach but also far enough not to be disturbed by the music, that night the 6 of us that met on the boat headed out for some dinner and some drinks on the beach by ... read more

After just over six months in South East Asia, our last real destination was the tiny island of Pulau Kapas. I was there just nine months ago and already there are signs of more development appearing. For one, an ugly concrete toilet block is under construction just metres away from KBC Resort's restaurant (charming!) and a new white concrete stairway has taken the place of the old method of accessing beach #5, namely the "tie-a-rope-to-a-tree" method (see before and after photos). Still, the island is definitely a gorgeous paradise getaway. While three beaches have resorts, there are another three beaches that are completely devoid of development. They are your typical picture-postcard scenes and I lost track of the number of times I caught my breath before turning to Scott to say, "Look at that, how beautiful!" ... read more

Lørdag 7. juni klokken 22.30 - 30 minutter forsinket ... read more

Despite my best intentions I haven’t been able to keep the site as up to date as I would have liked so this entry is a little bit outdated. Back in April I spent a week on the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia. It is an absolutely amazing place and every day was spent snorkelling or diving around the islands. Mass tourism is slowly making its way to the islands, but there is still a chance to enjoy the simple life. The snorkelling around the islands is awesome and all locations are easily accessible by the local boats. All the photos were taken with my waterproof camera (which thankfully lived up to its specifications). The camera was great underwater and hours were spent chasing camera shy clownfish. The highlight of the trip was swimming with Green Turtles ... read more
