Early start for us at 5am on Thursday. We flew Air Asia to Kota Bharu in the north east of Malaysia. I slept most of the way. At the airport we met 2 girls from Devon, Jess and Yulanda, whom we shared a taxi with to get us to Kuala Besut. This is where you get the speed boats out to the marine reserve islands of the perhentians, the two main ones being Besar and Kecil. The beauty of them is there are no airports or roads or cars, just jungle, beaches, rocks and turquoise waters filled with coral and marine life. Our accomodation was called D'Lagoon and was situated on the smaller island, Kecil, in a remote position north of long beach where the young uns go to get drunk. It is basically a few ... read more

Thailand- (Just crossed the border from Malaysia) Nibby- Wow, It's been a while since our last entry, but what can I say, when you're lazing the days away on a sunkissed golden beach sipping freshly fallen coconut juice its hard to drag yourself away to sit at a computer for a couple of hours! Our time in Malaysia has come to an end, but we had some adventures on the way. Our first stop was at an Island called Pulau Tioman on the east coast about 200km North of Singapore. We spent 5 days there sunning it up on the tiny beach. According to Times Magazine this Island is in the top 10 best Islands but it doesn't actually have a proper beach! We still loved it though. Spent a day on a snorkelling trip and ... read more

It has been about 9 years since I first travelled to the island of Perhentian Kecil, Peninsula Malaysia. It was a 10-day holiday from Japan with my friend Ashley and I can truly say we were enchanted. We had an overwhelming feeling that we were really priviledged to be in such a gorgeous and untouched place, where the beach was pristine, the snorkelling great, and the lifestyle rediculously horizontal. We didn't even have electricity, meaning that once our little gas lamp had been blown out for the night, there was no more light until daybreak. Evenings were spent sitting around the bonfire drinking home-made Baileys poured from a tin kettle. It was a true paradise. Three years ago I returned with Scott for a 6-week stint of snorkelling and sunbathing. Of course there were a lot ... read more

Kecil is also known as “Small Island” (as opposed to Big Island - Pulau Perhentian Besut) and we opted to stay here because of the gorgeous white sand beaches and coral and the cheaper accommodations. The speed boat ride took 30 minutes from Kuala Besut and then we stepped off onto the pier at Coral Bay. We walked down the beach to Senja Bay Resort and registered for an a-frame cabin -very simple and basic but had all we needed and was right on the beach! -for 50 RM (Malaysian Ringgits -about $17.) You can check out their web site at: www.senjabay.com Kecil is truly a piece of paradise! The beach is glorious and the coral is just right there -just had to swim a few strokes from shore with our snorkels and masks and we ... read more

We’ve just arrived back from the Perhentian Islands after 10 relaxing days. For the first 8days we stayed at Coral Bay on the smaller of the two islands, it was nice and quiet compared to Long Beach on the other side of the island (where we had originally planned to spend 4 of the 8 nights). The beach itself was quite small and scattered with coral, unlike Long Beach where the beach was large and made up of white sand, but the atmosphere was much more relaxed and welcoming. As soon as we arrived we dropped our bags and went snorkeling but there wasn’t that much to see near the shore which was slightly disappointing. When we got out of the sea we started to walk back along the beach and got tangled in a really ... read more

Hi all, here is the second installment of our travel adventures. So I think I mentioned in the last blog that we moved to a new Chalet called the Bintang View. It's set higher up away from the beach, so it's quieter and shadier, and it's lovely and clean. It's run by an Irishwoman and her husband, Finola and Joe. I think the second night we were there we just happened to be in the kitchen at dinnertime, so we ended up sharing our beers with Finola, and they shared their dinner with us. Joe is a great cook, and Finola used to be a chef in London, so what a great place for us to be! By the end of the night we had agreed that we would cook them a risotto before we left. ... read more

Hello again everyone. Really starting to get the hang of the blog now. We've just arrived in Kuala Lumpur airport again after 3 nights on kecil Island, one of the 2 Perhentian Islands. We stayed at the Senja Bay Resort. The place was breathtaking. It was like a paradise Island. No roads, just 3 or 4 boats coming onto the beach everyday with supplies. The water was crystal clear with tropical fish all around. We walked from one side of the island to the other in about 5 minutes through a jungle clearing. There was only 2 or 3 restaurants on our beach but we were staying full board so didn't have to worry about food. There was no beer on our beach but we did find a small bar on long beach to quench our ... read more

Well here we are. Sorry it's taken so long for our first entry but we have been busy....relaxing. So to begin, our flight from Sydney to KL seemed to take forever, but was otherwise uneventful. Passing through customs etc was quick, we got to go through the APEC line, even though Patrick doesn't yet have his card, and I didn't even use mine. It's just that no-one else was using it at that time of night, so they herded us through. We then found our free shuttle service to our hotel, checked in, quick change of clothes and off to the bar for beers. Our flight the next morning to Kota Bharu was at 7.30am, so we were up at 5.30 to sample the buffet breakfast.....it was a bit different than those we had experienced 5 ... read more
